This is so cute. Reuters allows Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, a U.S.-based environmental activist organization, to pen an amusing editorial, which, like so many others from climate alarmists, is long on alarmism, and short on reality and science. The best quote is

Indeed, climate change has begun to affect the ability of government agencies to fulfill their missions, reports the White House Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force.

Of course, there is not one instance of this occurring in the actual article, but, hey, it could explain the pure incompetence of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid. Can’t pass the health care bill? It’s because climate change is causing mental illness problems with the American People. Have to limit debate on legislation? It’s because the Congress critters are suffering from malnutrition and depression. Obama insulting the British leaders, people, press, and the Queen? Alligators in the Thames from climate change.

Continuing

“The Task Force has found that climate change is affecting, and will continue to affect, nearly every aspect of our society and the environment,” the report states. “Some of the impacts are increased severity of floods, droughts, and heat waves, increased wildfires and sea level rise.

“Climate change impacts are pervasive, wide-ranging and affect the core systems of our society: transportation, ecosystems, agriculture, business, infrastructure, water, and energy, among others,” the report continues. “Climate change already is affecting the ability of Federal agencies to fulfill their missions.”

Sounds more like a way to show that the federal government should take over nearly every aspect of our society.

If you thought “hey, maybe they will do it in someplace boring, which could use an economic lift, and wouldn’t show that the UN uses these conferences as taxpayer funded vacations,” well, no Thirsty Thursday for you!

Government negotiators are already writing off chances for a global treaty to fight climate change, nine months before the annual talks begin in Cancun, Mexico.

Yes, the big UN conference will be in the exotic vacation spot of Cancun. Oh, and did you catch that part about it already being written off?

Kunihiko Shimada, principal international negotiator at the Japanese Ministry of the Environment, said a deal this year is “almost impossible.” Jos Delbeke, who spearheads European Union climate policy at the European Commission, ruled out a “comprehensive legal agreement” in 2010.

Their remarks call into question whether efforts to curb greenhouse-gas emissions are progressing after failing in Copenhagen in December. President Barack Obama’s energy proposal is bogged down in the U.S. Congress. Without a U.S. commitment, China and India, two of the fastest-growing polluters, may be reluctant to limit greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

So, question: if it is already set up for failure, why have it? Oh, that’s right: exotic vacation spot of Cancun. The alarmist conference was originally meant to be held in Mexico City. Mexico City’s mayor also points out that Cancun is “nice and warm, but not very green.”

The food freaks tell food manufacturers that saturated fats and trans fats are harmful to health (both claims are a fantasy but tell a big enough lie often enough ….) so many manufacturers have moved to the next workable possibility — which is palm oil. But now that’s no good either! Using palm oil harms the environment, we hear. It probably does but it is the fanatics that have created the problem, not the food manufacturers. If Greenpeace were a serious organization (I will wait for the laughter at that idea to subside), it is the food freaks they should be attacking. But food freaks and Greenies seem to be largely the same people so there is not much hope of that

GREENPEACE has accused the world’s leading food and drinks company, Nestlé, of having an ad featuring an office worker eating orang-utan fingers removed from YouTube. The video, which was launched overnight, parodies Nestle’s KitKat ads and shows an unwitting office worker taking a break to enjoy a KitKat but instead bites into an orang-utan’s finger, causing blood to stream down his face. The video can be viewed at www.greenpeace.org/kitkat.

“Nestlé today admitted that they have been using palm oil from the destroyed rainforest homes of the last orang-utans in some of their products, but having our video removed proves they are still trying to hide that fact,” Greenpeace Head of Campaigns, Steve Campbell, said. “This is an apparent attempt to silence the truth that some of its most popular brands use palm oil from destroyed rainforests and peatlands. “We’ll continue to put the video up on other websites until Nestlé removes all rainforest destroying palm oil from its supply chain.”

Protests took place overnight across Europe at Nestlé’s headquarters and factories in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands after the company’s admission to using palm oil. They called on Nestlé staff to urge the company to stop using palm oil from the world’s worst suppliers in Indonesia.

Globally, Nestlé is a major consumer of palm oil. In the last three years, its annual use has almost doubled, with 320,000 tonnes of palm oil going into a range of products, including KitKat, according to Greenpeace.

The global warming “debate” mainly consists of skeptics pointing to scientific facts and Warmists replying with personal abuse and accusations. The Warmist reply is, in other words, almost always an example of an ad hominem fallacy — one of the classic informal fallacies that one encounters in the study of formal logic. The rough translation of the fallacy into sporting terminology is, “Playing the man and not the ball”. In other words, one very rarely gets a survey of the relevant facts from Warmists. Appeals to authority (another informal fallacy) are about the best they can do.

Being a typical scientific skeptic, therefore, I take very little interest in personalities and in accordance with that orientation, I do not intend to reproduce or excerpt a recent interview with Marc Morano. I have the highest regard for Marc but just don’t think that personalities should be the issue. I might note, however, that Marc does a good job of deflecting all the expected ad hominem accusations directed against him (accusing him of being a “creationist” etc.)

A young German physicist named Jörg Rings was however, much seized by the interview, and did an analysis of it. So was it the science he analysed? No way! He analysed Marc’s “tactics” and concludes that they are very clever.

Finally, in the “Comments” section of his post (08:33 of 15.03.10) he observes as follows: “Und – ich werde jetzt nicht Godwins Zorn herabrufen – gewisse historische Figuren waren auch ‘extremely clever and dangerous’”. That translates as: “I am not going to call down wrath of Godwin – certain historical figures were also ‘extremely clever and dangerous’”. In other words he compares Marc to Hitler! How’s that for an ad hominem argument! It’s a classic!

It really is amusing how low Warmists have to stoop in their Kampf (struggle) with reality!

Here’s one from a few days ago I ran across, which already has garnered over 840 comments, most of them seemingly taking the writer, Peter Gleick, to task for his climahysterical article. Let’s see, shall we?

Here’s one from a few days ago I ran across, which already has garnered over 840 comments, most of them seemingly taking the writer, Peter Gleick, to task for his climahysterical article. Let’s see, shall we?

Here is the best argument against global warming:

. . . .

Oh, right. There isn’t one.

There is no good argument against global warming. In all the brouhaha about tiny errors recently found in the massive IPCC report, the posturing by global climate deniers, including some elected officials, leaked emails, and media reports, here is one fact that seems to have been overlooked:

First, it is not an argument against global warming. It is against man caused (anthropogenic, man induced, whatever you want to term it) global warming, or, as you folks call it, climate change, since you, in such a self-described scientific manner, link everything into it. Hot, cold, wet, dry, snow, tornadoes, hurricanes or lack thereof, frogs dying, species being found, allergies, etc and so on. Second, it is not incumbent upon us “deniers” to prove our theory, based on 4 billion years of history. You have to prove yours.

Third, those “tiny” errors are not actually tiny. Many of them are primary points within the UN IPCC, used to “prove” their whole position.

Those who deny that humans are causing unprecedented climate change have never, ever produced an alternative scientific argument that comes close to explaining the evidence we see around the world that the climate is changing.

I’ll leave that to the professionals at this moment, but, I did notice something, Pete. Do you mind if I call you Pete? Nowhere in you article do you provide a scientific argument that explains how the current warming period is caused “most likely,” to us, in the IPCC vernacular, by Mankind. Sucks to be you. Oh, hey, can you explain the “no statistical warming over the last 15 years,” or that the Medieval Warm Period was warmer than today, as told by Phil Jones? How about all the “missing” data? Or that temperature upticks precede CO2? Or…..well, we all know the reality. Can we move Peter from stage 1 of the 5 stages of grief?

Here is the way scientists think science works: Ideas and theories are proposed to explain the scientific principles we understand, the evidence we see all around us, and the mathematical models we use to test theories. Alternative theories compete.

Uh huh

Gore, the self-anointed climate change alarmist-in-chief, told supporters on a March 15 conference call that severe weather in certain regions of the country could be attributed to carbon in the atmosphere – including the recent rash of rainy weather.

There’s your “scientific” theory, Pete. If everything can be blamed on global warming, it is no longer science, it is tautology.

Scientists are used to debating facts with each other, with the best evidence and theory winning. Well, this is a bar fight, where the facts are irrelevant, and apparently, the rules and tools of science are too. But who wins bar fights? As the Simpsons cartoon so brilliantly showed, bullies. Not always the guy who is right.

Al Gore is not a scientist, Pete. Nor is Barack Obama, nor are the Democrats (and Lindsay Graham) who are pushing this. Nor are a good chunk of those who wrote the IPCC. Hmmph. Strange, huh?

Anyhow, check out the comments. Great stuff.

I commented briefly last month about the rather florid claims by Kanazawa — including a claim of a positive correlation between atheism and IQ. I noted that his findings were probably an artifact of the Leftist influence on the educational system. I am therefore rather pleased to see that a writer on the Puffington Host has drawn similar conclusions. That an atheist conservative such as myself and a religious Leftist such as Josh Schrei should come to similar conclusions does rather reinforce those conclusions, I think. His argument is an extensive and careful one but I think that his strongest point is this:

Kanazawa’s test group were all Americans. In America, atheism and liberalism are both value systems embraced by the educated middle class and are part of the cultural fabric of liberal arts universities, Ivy League colleges, and the American intelligentsia. Therefore, saying that among a small group of Americans, liberals and atheists had higher IQ test scores is a bit like saying that people with more college education in this country tend to know more.

Putting it another way, smarter people are more likely to go to college and there they come under pressure to adopt Leftist ideas, which include a contempt for religion generally and Christianity in particular. As I said previously, the correlation is almost certainly a product of the sociology of the situation, not a product of genetics. There are a couple of other generally good comments here and here.

Sadly, a later article by Schrei on the same subject was much more naive and illogical. I suppose we can’t expect too much from a Leftist. He should have read this.

Posted by John Ray (M.A.; Ph.D.). For a daily critique of Leftist activities, see DISSECTING LEFTISM.

As icy waters pour over the gunwales of the sinking global warming hoax, rats begin to abandon ship. Here’s environmental scientist James Lovelock in 2007, well before the climate crisis was widely known to be a swindle:

Before this century is over, billions of us will die and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic.

In 2009, Lovelock admitted,

Most of the “green” stuff is verging on a gigantic scam.

But even then, the human race had only one chance to save “up to 90 per cent” of the population from perishing from global warming:

There is one way we could save ourselves and that is through the massive burial of charcoal. It would mean farmers turning all their agricultural waste — which contains carbon that the plants have spent the summer sequestering — into non-biodegradable charcoal, and burying it in the soil. Then you can start shifting really hefty quantities of carbon out of the system and pull the CO2 down quite fast.

Sounds like an expensive project; good thing it won’t be necessary. In light of the climate’s failure to get any warmer, Lovelock now says that C02 is preventing a climate crisis:

It is worth thinking that what we are doing in creating all these carbon emissions, far from being something frightful, is stopping the onset of a new ice age. If we hadn’t appeared on the earth, it would be due to go through another ice age and we can look at our part as holding that up.

Or maybe not, because as even casual observers have noticed,

…all the theoretical stuff … tends to be very dodgy and I think they are seeing this with climate change.

Let’s hope these clowns make the most of all the grant money showered upon them at taxpayer expense. The credibility they sold for it will take a generation to regain.

On a tip from Oiao. Cross-posted at Moonbattery.

Like I, and so many others have stated, as we run into the warm season in the Northern Hemisphere, the Climahysterics start emerging from their burrows like so many hibernating skunks (the comparison might not be fair to the skunks), and we end up with

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 9 (IPS/TerraViva) – The negative fallout from climate change is having a devastatingly lopsided impact on women compared to men, from higher death rates during natural disasters to heavier household and care burdens.

In the 1991 cyclone disasters that killed 140,000 in Bangladesh, 90 percent of victims were reportedly women; in the 2004 Asian Tsunami, an estimated 70 to 80 percent of overall deaths were women.

And following the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in the United States, African-American women, who were the poorest population in some of the affected States in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, faced the greatest obstacles to survival, according to the New York-based Women’s Environment and Development Organisation (WEDO).

The 2007 Human Development Report, issued by the U.N. Development Programme, points out that women are particularly affected by climate change because they are the largest percentage – accounting for about 70 percent – of the poor population.

Because massive tropical systems never occurred before Man started messing up the climate. And we see the “climate change causes earthquakes idiocy” again. Uh huh. Another explanation would be that, and I’m sure I will be called a misogynist or something, too many women become pregnant at a young age, receive no education, and basically become Welfare Queens.

Climate change is apparently also responsible for women’s health problems, a loss of basic civil rights, reduced education, sexism, and…

In neighbouring Uganda, the food crises associated with climate change have been linked to higher rates of early marriage for girls, as they are exchanged for dowry or bride price.

These “famine marriages” – as they are called – not only lead to girls dropping out of school, but also make them vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections and related reproductive complications.

Double “uh huh.” Because there were never marriages like that before. Face meet palm. How is it possible to take climate alarmists seriously when they keep trotting out silliness like this?

I am here in Beautiful Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin for the AFP Defending the American Dream Summit… or I assume it’ll be beautiful once the drab days of Winter are over, anyway. I haven’t been to the Dells since about 1973, so things have changed a tad since I was last here.

Tonight, after registration closed for the evening, we had a nice little cocktail party, I mingled a little and heard from a few of the respected speakers from whom we’ll hear more tomorrow.

Grover Norquist from Americans for Tax Reform spoke on the evils of taxes and government spending, then Lord Christopher Monkton came to the podium and gave us a wonderfully droll address of which I’ll say more in a moment. We had the pleasure of hearing a word or two from the Wall Street Journal’s John Fund. Then we heard from the ubiquitous Joe Wurzelbacher, otherwise known as “Joe the Plumber.” Finally we heard a few words from AFP big cheese Tim Phillips.

Lord Christopher Monkton was a treat to hear tonight. He roused the crowd with a few amusing Brit vs. American observations, pumped up the Wisconsinites by recognizing that their AFP chapter is second only to the Wisconsin Teachers union in size, clocking in as the second biggest political organization of the state. That got the Badger Stater’s blood up. But his finishing comments were the best. He told the assembled that he has arrived at the perfect guidepost by which to measure the coming Republican tsunami in the 2010 elections. In keeping with his penchant to scoff at global warming (which he goaded the crowd into giving the “American nickname” of Bull_ _it), Sun spots, Lord Monkton observed, were few during the preceding year when Barack Obama won his seat in D.C. But as the first sun spots began to become active once again the GOP won in Virginia, New Jersey, and then Massachusetts. So, as Lord Monkton asserted, as the sun spots grow so too does Republican representation in government. That, he says, is the perfect correlation to tell the future! This got much laughter and applause.

After Lord Monkton left the lectern, Joe the Plumber took his place before the crowd and gave his typically understated, straight talking address. But as he left, he and Lord Monkton stood side by side near me. They were shaking hands and seemed quite chummy. And that, I thought to myself, was a true “clash of civilizations”! Here was Lord Monkton, adviser to the most powerful British politician in generations (Margaret Thatcher for those unawares) standing and chatting amiably with “Joe the Plumber,” one of our most humble countrymen. Amazing what you’ll see if you’re around long enough, eh?

Anyway, I am about to turn in back at the extensive Chula Vista Resort here in The Wisconsin Dells. I am not sure whether or not I’ll have time to update you all tomorrow, but if not I’ll be putting my day to good use as a panelist on the RightOnLine discussion panel and hearing all the many great speakers that AFP has lined up for our edification.

Until we next meet… as my pal Ann “Babe” Huggett says, “Stay Tuned.”

Despite the devastating financial impact it will have on all American households and businesses, President Obama declares Cap and Trade must be passed this year. As with suggestions for better-structured health care reform, there is a way to clean the planet without imposing dire hardships on its inhabitants, including those living in the United States. Yet, President Obama yields to the strident call of radical environmentalists such as Al Gore, reportedly desirous to become the first global-warming billionaire, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. In a Washington Post opinion column, Ban blamed the slaughter in Darfur on global warming instead of the Muslim genocide being perpetrated against non-Muslim blacks. With that, one would have to extrapolate that Osama bin Laden’s call for jihad in Darfur is also the result of global warming. With extreme hyperbole, Ban warns of war and pestilence to come if the United States does not throw billions of Americans’ tax dollars into an increasingly deceptive environmental abyss.

President Obama should put a lock on the U.S. treasury in the face of the environmental embarrassment known as climate-gate with revelations of fraud and erupting scandals among pro-global warming scientists. Yet, once again, the President is rushing to bow to a far-left agenda of international wants instead of looking out for America’s needs. With record setting snowfall and planet-cooling temperatures being documented worldwide and with the latest science and nature stacking against him, why is President Obama adamant in forcing through disastrous Cap and Trade legislation? All the while, he dispassionately declares that Americans’ energy bills will necessarily “skyrocket.”

Enter: AGENDA 21. Agenda 21 is a United Nation’s game plan for a radical transformation of the global society. At the Rio Earth Summit, Al Gore stated that “Americans are going to have to face a wrenching transformation of Society.” President Obama’s stated goal is a “transformation of America” as we know it. The innocuous term used by the United Nations to accomplish this transformation is “Sustainable Development.” Broken down, that means the dismantling of America as a sovereign nation and the globalization of our economy and our laws. Our rate of development, according to globalists, is “un-sustainable” based on underdeveloped countries. In effect, it restricts population and economic growth in America through government-controlled health care and through decreased and redistributed resources such as energy and wealth. Americans should no longer “sustain life” of the very young or elderly or remain sovereign and prosperous. The globalists’ creed is – the planet cannot endure it.

Progressive politicians on both sides of the aisle have signed on to Agenda 21’s “Sustainable Development.” Obama’s health-scare will have a vice-like grip on who gets medical care – who lives or dies, whereas Cap and Trade, that Obama so desperately wants, will allow the government to have a vice-like grip on how Americans live. With Cap and Trade, the Environmental Protection Agency will have power to force many homeowners to virtually rebuild their homes to meet stringent environmental requirements before they can sell them. Living in a house that does not meet the EPA’s “green” regulations for roofing, windows, doors, insulation or heating and cooling systems will be slapped with fines. Electrical companies are now installing “smart monitoring systems” to track usage of energy by residents. Hence, President Obama’s warning that your energy bills will “skyrocket.” This represents only one area of control.

America’s health, wealth, and way of life are to be sacrificed to global need based on bogus science by those who believe you can be duped into believing it is all in your best interest and the interest of the planet. Cap and Trade is a global agenda with pockets to be lined at America’s expense. President Obama says there is a “deficit of trust” in America. What he did not say is that it is directed at the White House.
