Rumor: McCain Chooses Romney for VP
Posted on July 3, 2008
Nothing official…just rumor…but a leak?
Sen. John McCain will choose businessman and former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney as Vice President, in his bid for the White House this November, a source closely connected with the McCain campaign, who asked to remain anonymous, told us earlier this afternoon.
Though others were close in the running, the choice ultimately came down to the money–not the man. According to our source, the campaign narrowed their Vice Presidential options to Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, the two most successful opponents of McCain in the bid for the Republican nomination. But despite Huckabee’s sway with far Right conservatives and evangelical voters, Romney packs the deepest fund-raising pockets.
As a successful businessman and prominent member of the staggeringly wealthy Mormon community, Romney brings with him the potential to raise “upwards of $60 million in 30 to 60 days, whereas Huckabee could only raise $10 to $15 million,” says our source.
I don’t know what to make of it. If its true, I think he made a good decision, though I would have personally have liked to see him pick someone more conservative.

It’s the economy stupid.
We need a good point man on economics who can go after the Dems on that score. Romney is the only one in the field who can do it well.
This will cause some conservative heartburn, and it would be better to have a thoroughbred conservative in the VP slot, but the only ones I can think that fit the bill are Mike Pence, Gov Sanford or Marsha Blackburn. As a conservative, I am more than fine with Romney as VP, its the best “inside the box” choice.
Romney’s definitely a better pick than Huckabee. Actually Romney would be a better “P” choice of the lot, but that’s just me.
With Karl Rove taking over McAmnestys campaign, we can file this under the banner of “Why am I not surprised”. That and the fact most of Bush’s donners and campaign workers, went to work for Mitt on his Presidential run.
Amazing business man, Socialists Gov. Yep sounds like the new Republican Party to me. Bring on Romeny (National) Health-Care.
Not just a leak. A “test” leak.
I’m with you Grain of Salt. I would love for this to be true about Ronmey, but the Huckabeen in the top 2 gives me doubts also. Huck not even making the top 50! Love it and likely true!!!
I have to agree Romney should be the Presidential candidate not the vice presidential. To bad this whole process could not go any faster. I fear Bush will have us in war with Iran. Not something I believe we are ready for.
Call me an ubber cynical Romney supporter but I think these ‘leaks,’ these “wink wink” things, are largely some maneuver to try and squeeze more out of former Romney backers without having to make a decision for or against Romney ’till the announcement, one that will not come ’till the Dem Convention. The worst it would do for the McCain campaign is get them a few more Romney backer dollars, if he goes with Romney them then they stay happy, if not it doesn’t much matter because those that did would likely have not without the rumors, and those who didn’t with the rumors certainly would not have given after an announcement unless Romney was chosen. So McCain can only win a few more dollars by leaking and Romney will go along just fine with it.
Like Mormans have more money then Christians.
WTF EVER. Huckabee out preforms in every poll on the veep ticket., Romney is a joke, he will only help the dems win. There is only hour apon hour of video of romney ridiculing mccain during the primary. You wont find any Video of Huckabee critisizing McCain. This is a Romney wet dream. He using all his political sway, trying to get on that ticket. Im not buying it. I wont vote for McCain, unless Huckabee is on the ticket., Oh and dont worry- Im no evangelical either. http://www.theveep.com
I hope this is NOT true. If McCain does choose Romney for VP he has just LOST my vote. There is no way I will vote for him if Romney is anywhere near the ticket- he is the most unethical and two-faced candidate I’ve ever seen. It would also show me that McCain is not a man of principle- he hates Romney and the two of them look so unnatural together.
Sure Romney could raise money but doesn’t that also show how unelectable he is–all that money and still he couldn’t win in any important states. Huckabee fared so much better in Iowa and the important South with very little money.
If this is true, looks like McCain has sold out to big money Republicans.
Romney would be a terrible pick- we can just hand the victory to the Dems if he is VP. They will have a field day going over his flip flopping past. And just because Mitt was a corporate raider does not mean he knows how to run the economy.
McCain should choose Huckabee- he would bring in the all important evangelical vote and the south. Huckabee has appeal with Independents, Romney does not.
I was a Romney supporter so this would make my heart glad. His religion is not a big deal to me.
We also have to look at the history of senators becoming president …. we need a strong VP just in case.
Plus, it is the economy … and he has a proven track record.
If Romney is on the ticket I will check out of this election and instead use my website to campaign for Huckabee2012. Romney is the most two faced and deceitful politician I have seen - I simply cannot stomach the man.
If true that is very disappointing to me. As a practically life-long Republican, I don’t know that I can vote for McCain if he chooses Romney. To choose money over values? Money would be the more expedient option, which makes it less likely that I would vote for McCain. I am not an evangelical, and this has nothing to do with religion. I don’t even go to church. But can Romney help McCain energize and change the country? Does he inspire? Does he stand tall for values and ideals that are fundamental to the nation, or does he blow with the wind as it changes from day to day?
I can hardly imagine voting for Obama, but this would have me look a little closer at his views.
Well Pobbycock, you suckered me in. “sources”, Ok. Look, the only reason McCain would choose Romney is because his plastic Barbie wife told him that she wanted the plastic Ken doll (Romney)to play with. His hair, walk, smile, demeanor is genuine USA plastic.
There is far to much at stake for McCain to choose green over plastic. Savy?
Evangelicals were energized to campaign and vote for Bush in 2000 and 2004. With Romney on the ticket they won’t be - and Obama will win. It’s that simple.
Not all Evangelicals are Mormon haters. Most of them will support a McCain/Romney ticket because they realize that Mormon have the exact values as other Conservatives.
Evangelicals for Mitt

Why We Support Mitt
http://www.evangelicalsformitt.org/why.php
I can’t believe a few of you won’t vote for him because he’s a mormon.(I have a feeling you guys wouldn’t like him if he was Catholic either.) That’s as childish as it comes.
I’m not voting for this ticket because it will seal the deal on the Republican Party being Socialists lite. Romeny-Care (see National HealthCare) and McAmensts plan for loving your country more than yourself (see FDR’s platform). Welcome to the new and improved Republican Party.
Where’s Barry Goldwater when you need him?
Mormons are organized. Evangelicals are chaos. Mormons may be too organized and not as free and easy as Evangelicals, but right now we need serious organized people. Mitt can stand up to China, Mexico, the Middle East and big oil if he chooses to do so. Nobody outside the South will take Huckabee serious. In an emergency call a Mormon. Evangelicals are not reliable.
Re: Mike’s comment… “Not all Evangelicals are mormon haters”. It’s funny how Romney’s religion wasn’t mentioned by anyone on this page until your post Mike. Twisting people’s comments to make them look like bigots is disingenuous.
Mitt Romney is detested by so many people because of his character - not because of his faith.
It’s clearly NOT gonna be Romney.
It IS gonna be Palin.
Take that to the bank!
All you Huck fans get over it…Romney is what the party needs to even have a chance and you all know it….I truly think yall have problems with him being LDS and will not let it go….if Huck gets VP nod then i will support him….dont be haters and support the party or we will have judges on the High Court that will take our Country down a path that want be pretty.
Another thing….what if Mitt is VP and the ticket gets in and heaven forbid something happen to McCain in office then we have first Mitt as President…can yall deal with that?? Same for Huck if he is VP and same ordeal goes down….Pesonally i think McCain is not going to win and I feel that Romney should wait until 4 yrs like Reagan did.
Mitt is the most logical choice. Huckster supporters will either vote for the ticket or live with the fact that the Supreme Court will then backtrack on abortion.
Hmmmm. A non-vote for McCain-Romney is a vote FOR abortion. Seems like the radical right-wing wackos should put their vote where their mouth is. Most will probably stay home because in the end these right-wing wackos are hypocrites.
Romney’s brand of religion is a non-issue. His values, character, and capabilities are everything. This is a guy who can whip our economy into shape if we work with him. This is a real man who can make Obama look like a little boy. This is McCain’s balance. This is the team we (Mormons, Evangelicals, and Independents) need to rally around if we really love our country.
McCain will be sealing his own fate with Romney as v.p….that is, he will lose by a landslide. Romney is disliked INTENSELY by most of us because of his horrible attack campaign against McCain and Huckabee. He is a slippery, untrustworthy elitist that stands for everything the common, ordinary guy hates! He is the “king” of flip-floppers but Obama is catching up fast with and may soon surpass him! I hope McCain realizes that what is most important in a v.p. is the QUALITY of the v.p. and the connection he has with the heart and soul of the conservatives he needs to embrace..not the $$$. Get smart McCain or you might as well kiss off the presidency..choose Huckabee and win!!
I can understand evangelicals voting for Huckabee. It was vets for McCain, mormons for Mitt, women for Hillary and blacks for Obama. What I don’t get is the hatered and the bearing false witness against Mitt Romney, which is breaking a commandment by the way, from these so called God fearing and LOVING evangelicals who call themselves Christians. Please explain this to me. It’s not your hatered for Mitt, but rather for mormons, isn’t it???
People often hate what they don’t understand or fear—the basis of prejudice.
What I do understand is that Romney is a milk toast. He is ankle deep.
What I fear is McCain making the mistake of choosing him.
I don’t care if he worships at the Wigwam Temple. If you’ll tell me what a Mormon is , I’ll tell you what a Wigwam is.
Hey Ted811, that blog about Barbie and Ken was a scream! A Mormon is a Christian, we believe that Jesus Christ is the only name under heaven whereby mankind can be saved. What makes our faith different from all the rest, is we have the Holy Ghost.
this is a lie… this article is a joke…if romeny is on the ticket you will see that ticket sink faster than the titantic… He is the most liberal do and say anything to get voted in canidate. he is a combonation of obama and hillary put together. especially that deal that he tried to put together with china…this low life politician will never get my vote. i will vote for mccain but only if huckabee is on the ticket…if not i will wait for huckbee in 2012 and then i will do all i an to make sure that he wins…at this point i have no confidence in the gop or the dem, i will not be over taken by any blog or liberal reporter that is in the tank for MITT FLIP FONEY… i have done my research and every acusation against him is a liar he is a 1 hit wonder and was a disaster for mass economy his hillary style health care was nothing more than universal health are… why didn’t you report on that you MITTEN KITTEN….
Add up the votes. Romney was right alongside mcCain. 1 or 2 states go the other way and Romney was right there. You name callers only reveal your hatred. Learn more about him. Closed down his company to help a co-worker find his lost daughter in New York. Serves his country and the people continually with no salary. Praised for his competence running the olympics and saving companies. respected by fellow congressmen, even those who do not like him. Supports states right to make their own decision on gay marriage and abortion and did so just as he said he would when running for Gov. even though he personally is opposed and fights against both which many people can not understand. No scandals. I think they called the dog on the car about the biggest scandal even though the dog liked it. Or maybe it was that he shot rabbits instead of deer. No skeletons, squeaky clean and people do not trust that maybe because it is so uncommon. He is uncommon, and will secure the win for the Republicans.
Hucabee is nothing more than a Wolf in Sheeps Clothing. Played the religion card to get as far as he got. talk about being a Mitt Kitten, atleast I’m not a Huck Butt Sucker. That guy put Ak. in such a hole they don’t know if they’ll ever recover with his Demoncat tax and spend policies. Talk about lies, he was brought up on over 20 ethic charges and never did obtain a preachers license. I can go on
I can’t believe how just any garbage can be printed on the internet. This article is a slander to John McCain. Senator McCain will never be bought because he is a man who is principled and has integrity. He will choose his running mate as the person he best believes can help him make the positive changes this country needs. Survey USA election polls taken in the last several weeks show McCain/Huckabee polls better than with Romney(even beat out Romney in MA), Pawlenty or Lieberman. Just watched a focus group out of PA and they were asked what does McCain need to do to get your vote. Two of them said flat out, take Governor Huckabee as his running mate. None ask for Romney….It is clear the vast majority (even many who initially voted for Romney) want Mike Huckabee on the ticket and believe he and Senator McCain will be able to show a united front (McCain could never do that with Romney as there was too much bad blood during the primaries). Romney slammed McCain on everything from his conservatism to the war in IRAQ. McCain has too much integrity to “get into bed” with him now….
My opinion is if Romney is picked (which I’ll be shocked if McCain swallows that bitter pill) the Republicans will lose. Romney will not be a viable candidate in 2012 after first the disastrous primary run where he blew 100M$ to do worse than Huckabee who spent 14M$. That, on top of being on a losing ticket would certainly not look good on his future resume!! So, if Romney is able to buy his way onto the ticket (another thing folks won’t like), he might just be buying the end to his political career!!!
I would be happy to see Mitt Romney nominated as VP. It’s unlikely that I will vote for McCain unless he chooses someone who is very conservative excepting Huckabee. Huckabee seems to be the most dishonest, unlikeable character I have seen in politics. He twists everything and lies to promote himself.
Romney appears to be honest and is a hard worker. I like Pawlenty as well.
Romney is the most competent and dynamic politician I’ve ever seen . . . I hope the Mormonism thing doesn’t hurt him with all the Huckabigots in the world. If it doesn’t, Romney will make one hell of good VP.
Romney didn’t brag about it all the time like Mike Upchuckabiggot, but Romney is a deeply religious man. The problem is: everyone hates his religion. Romney, however, is more committed to his belief in God than any president or vice-president in 200 years. At least he never flip-flopped on that . . . or his family.
Elmer Fudd–played by Obama (empty waggon making alot of noise–stutter himself into oblivion pretending to know what he’s talking about)
Tasmanian Devil–played by McCain (goes all stutter/blinking balistic when he has to answer truthfully)
Wylee Coyote–played by Mitt Romney (all the resources, organized, pretty boy Ken Doll– no results)
Buggs Bunney–played by Huckabee (watch your back or he’ll be back).
Huckabee disappointed me greatly when he self-righteously tried to trump the “Christian” card in the election, directly trying to convince voters to vote against Mormonism rather than against Mitt Romney (a bigoted and hypocritical strategy).
Of course, Huckabee tried to appear innocent the whole time he was bashing Romney’s religion (rather than Romney himself as he should have done), asking, for example, the seemingly innocent question, “don’t Mormons believe that Satan and Jesus are brothers?” while simultaneously being fully aware of Mormon beliefs, having been a speaker himself at the recent Soutern Baptist Convention in SLC, Utah (his speech was carefully taken off the internet prior to the election).
Likewise, when Huckabee “unknowingly” had that white cross mysteriously appear behind him in that commercial over Christmas, attempting to appear angelic or even “chosen” to evangelical Iowa- that was a big turn-off- not only to evangelicals, but to many wealthy Republican Mormons, who saw this, as they had to, as a direct attack against their faith- not against Romney.
Then there was that commercial fiasco when Huckabee said he wasn’t going to release his mean-spirited commercial and then he did- to the press, knowing it would be seen more this way than by paying TV stations to run it. Are we to believe he didn’t realize this? Are his deceptive techniques acceptable for a potential VP of the United States, let alone a Preacher? I don’t think so; I think the “H” in Huckabee stands for HYPOCRIT.
I originally didn’t want Romney for President or even VP, but after seeing the true character of Hucabee and some others in this race, it appears to me that Romney is not only the most experienced and capable VP option for McCain, but one of the last remaining politicians with some degree of integrity.
This blog just shows how Huckabee supporters are not willing to work as a team with the rest of the Conservative Movement. I see most of their comments saying things like “If Huckabee is not chosen as VP then I am voting for Obama!” This is so childish. It is more important for them to have the Liberals win than to have our views and own party take the Presidential bid. I personally prefer Mitt as the chosen VP, but if Huckabee were even close to being VP or is chosen…that would definitely not sway my vote for the Democratic side one bit. I think it is important to keep our Conservative values alive. McCain needs to win this election and so it is important to go to the polls and vote for the Presidential candidate with our views…and hopefully you will agree that it is definitely McCain. Cheers
joey
Mike Huckabee played the “Christian” card? Please. He has been a pastor for YEARS. I think this is enough proof that he is a sincere man of God. It’s as simple as this- McCain needs Huckabee to even have a chance at winning. Having Romney on the ticket will take away most of the evangelical vote, because sadly enough, people can’t look past the title “Mormon”. Huckabee wins the south for McCain (including toss-ups NC and VA) and regenerates the evangelicals to come out and vote for the Republican ticket. Either way, I am voting Republican. Obama freaks me out.
Listen all, im an independent and we just CANNOT have Obama in the WH. Whether it is Romney or Huckabee or whoever, we as independents and republicans should vote REPUBLICAN. Not to vote is a vote for Obama! We need to all just look at the severity of having Obama as Pres and what that would do to our country at this fragile time for our nation. We need to stand together and vote together regardless of who McCain picks. If we don’t work together on this we all lose and the Dems (obama) will win. I am voting Republican no matter who McCain chooses. Yes i have a veep id prefer but it will not change the outcome of my republican vote.
Chris,
What do you mean Mitt Romeny has NO CHARACTER?
HE HAS BEEN FAITHFULLY MARRIED TO ANN FOR OVER 37 YEARS. HE IS A GREAT FATHER AND WONDERFUL GRANDFATHER. HE USED HIS OWN MONEY NOT YOURS. HE RAN OUR OLYMPICS WITH HONOR AND GREAT CHARACTER. IF THERE IS ONE THING MITT ROMNEY HAS MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THIS RACE IT IS HONOR, CHARACTER. STOP MORMON BASHING. ANY RELIGION WHICH DENIES REVELATION FROM GOD AND STILL TEACHES A MAN TO PRAY IS CONFUSED.
Jake, so a man need only be a Pastor for years to be deemed a “Man of God” in your eyes? What if he was a child-abuser or a hypocritical bigot while he was a Pastor? What if his entire goal was to earn money as a Pastor? Most (though not all) of evangelical “Christianity,” in this country is Priestcraft- congregations fighting eachother for money and power….period.
Huckabee may be suitable to a few people in the south as a preacher, but he does NOT have the Republican base.
choosing the Huckster for VP would be like inviting the class clown to run our government.Look at the mans eyes ..he is on something. Hey,do, we want someone to rescue this coun
tries economic delema,or are we gonna leave that to 666, oh i mean Obama??? Mccain knows nothing about finances.Romney Has a financial degree from Harvard. Now I ask you foolish ones Who would you want in charge ???Romney is the knight in shining armour,we would be so favored if he would serve us as VP!! I’m crossing my fingers and toes!
!
I dont understand why any sane person ,would snub our party to vote for a man that won”t even provide us with his birth certificate.! obama is the candidate, who won’t disclose basic necessities!!! How did he get this far in the first place? Are WE SO DESPERATE for a change of some kind, that we are willing to sell our souls to a stranger???? Wake up !! those of you who would even consider casting one vote for Obama are victims of HYPNOTISM! A man of high moral ethical values like Mitt, could help run our country, and you are threatening instead to vote for a charlatan.God help us ,we have lost our way
Hey,for those of you who mock Mormons…Mormon is a nick name ! THE CORRECT name of that ORGANIZATION is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday saints. They don’t worship Mormon or Joseph Smith. They worship Jesus Christ.
LOL (if huckabee isnt chosen I will probably be voting Barr.) McCain needs Huckabee if he is going to win. Huckabee would help McCain in the south which he is going to lose if he takes any other VP. Barr is going to destroy any chances McCain has in the south in states like Georgia. Huckabee is loved in the south. I also want to say about Gen Clarks Comments I thought Clark was dead on. Obama should not of thrown him under the bus, but instead should embrace him. I also think Wesley Clark has been treated very unfairly by the press for his comments. I like Clark, Thank you General Clark for speaking the truth. Here is why Obama needs Clark http://www.theobamaplan.com
As far as McCain and his Veep goes. I like Huckabee for the McCain Veep. He is going to need help in the south. http://www.McCanes.com
The Libertarians should run Barr with Paul instead of Barr with Root. http://www.BarrRoot.com http://www.BarrPaul08.com
I love the vp discussion blogs, I get all my veep info and rumors at http://www.VeepPeek.com You can also sign petitions there for your favorite Vp Candidates, Ive signed one for Huckabee for the Rep side and Clark for the Dem side.
Romney adds a net nothing to the ticket; his negatives at least approximate the positives.
McCain NEEDS Alaska Gov Sarah Palin (if he wants to win in November) — whose positives are too numerous to mention here (with no negatives).
– and don’t cite Palin’s lack of experience, since she’s got 10 times that of Obama!!!
Here I go: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has a lot going for her, um, well, at least two things: she’s a woman and she’s not a Mormon.
If Republicans are going to vote on thos issues, then I’ll no longer be able to associate with Republicans. I’m already starting to call myself an Independent.
-She has no money or fundraising ability.
-She has 10 times Obama’s experience but 1/10 Romney’s experience.
-She has 1/10 Romney’s facility with economics and the other major issues facing America.
-Nobody currently vying for VP or President on either ticket is more generally capable/intelligent than Romney.
-She is an unknown in the Republican Party that will not give the Western states to theh Republicans- Romney is known and he will.
RE: Paul’s comments from 7/4… I don’t believe we
have the need for your “WTF” language here. We are discussing the VP subject intelligently and your slang has no place here. Also, get a check on your spelling skills. Your poor spelling allows your comments to be taken less seriously. C’mon, as a Republican, you need to show your knowledge. Ron on 7/6, Shaun on 7/4, Aaron on 7/6, and Heather on 7/6, you all are RIGHT ON! Let’s pull together as Christians and Republicans and defeat the wicked and totally scary B.H.O.!!!
Yes, I agree with Sherry. Let’s show some class here and stand up for what we all know is right! Let’s stand up for our beloved America and the ideals which we all value. We must not give in to the “ways of the world.” As Christians, we are “In it, not of it.” We must not condemn Romney’s faith, but look to his strengths, of which he has many. Let’s not reduce ourselves to be like the Muslim Islamic extremists who wish to push their religion on others and elimiate those who do not believe what they do. Let’s hold tight to what we believe and keep our faith. We can work together with different faiths while holding steadfast to our Christianity for the good of America. We are the salt of the earth with Jesus as our LIght, and others are watching us. Let’s set a good example. And let’s win the White House!
Evangelicals for Mitt

Why We Support Mitt
http://www.evangelicalsformitt.org/why.php
Sherry, thanks for the spelling correction. I was in a hurry and didn’t check. I do agree with unifying comments about supporting whoever McCain chooses. But, honestly, if Romney is not on the ticket, I’ll be voting for McCain out of principle only- it won’t be because I think he can win against the Obama machine…
I am almost ashamed to call myself an evangelical after what I see Huckabee supporters do and say. They seem to be as tolerant as the Taliban. This is not the Christianity I read in the bible, nor what I hear Mormons teach. Many of my friends are too relyant upon what thier pastor tells them. Remember people, your pastor gets paid by your tithes. He has a vested interest in keeping you in his church and not the one across the street and god forbid a mormon church. They run a business (a very worthy business). You know why the news leads with what bleeds ? It sells advertising. You know why there are so many books/dvd’s and paid preachers to tell us why mormons are bad ? THEY GET PAID very well becuase all you suckers go and buy it. Be more Christian and open up your mind. We dont love the choices on the Republican side. BUT Obama is a horrible choice and supports very non christian ideals.
Linda Rayborn (above) quotes results from 1 poll and 1 focus group and concludes that Huckabee is the best choice for McCain. Wow, and I thought I was ignorant! All the polls I’ve heard of (the major ones) indicate that Romney is the obvious choice. Once again, I’m not a huge Romney fan, just like I’m not a huge McCain fan, but this match-up is CLEARLY the best possible for the Republicans to have a prayer against Obama.
Forget the party, vote for conservative values. If Obama shared my conservative values I’d vote for him. McCain doesn’t share my conservative values. Romney does. Romney should wait another four years to run because McCain wouldn’t win against the hip Obama. But if Romney does want to be V.P., I’d vote for a McCain/Romney ticket. Conservative values? Beck puts is succinctly:
A conservative believes that our inalienable rights do not include housing, healthcare or Hummers.
A conservative believes that our inalienable rights DO include the pursuit of happiness. That means it is guaranteed to no one.
A conservative believes that those who pursue happiness and find it have a right to not be penalized for that success.
A conservative believes that there are no protections against the hardship and heartache of failure. We believe that the right to fail is just as important as the chance to succeed and that those who do fail learn essential lessons that will help them the next time around.
A conservative believes in personal responsibility and accepts the consequences for his or her words and actions.
A conservative believes that real compassion can’t be found in any government program.
A conservative believes that each of us has a duty to take care of our neighbors. It was private individuals, companies and congregations that sent water, blankets and supplies to New Orleans far before the government ever set foot there.
A conservative believes that family is the cornerstone of our society and that people have a right to manage their family any way they see fit, so long as it’s not criminal. We are far more attuned to our family’s needs than some faceless, soulless government program.
A conservative believes that people have a right to worship the God of their understanding. We also believe that people do not have the right to jam their version of God (or no God) down anybody else’s throat.
A conservative believes that people go to the movies to be entertained and to church to be preached to, not the other way around.
A conservative believes that debt creates unhealthy relationships. Everyone, from the government on down, should live within their means and strive for financial independence.
A conservative believes that a child’s education is the responsibility of the parents, not the government.
A conservative believes that every human being has a right to life, from conception to death.
A conservative believes in the smallest government you can get without anarchy. We know our history: The larger a government gets, the harder it will fall.
Those are the things a conservative believes in, and they’re the things that I believe in. Now, if only I could find a candidate to match.
Mike,
You hit it on the head.
“If McCain is smart, he’ll pick Sarah Palin as his VP.
McCain-Palin would be a great ticket.
The article above says insiders will convince McCain he should ignore Palin because she hasn’t been in office long, and because Alaska is already guaranteed GOP territory.
That’s a colossal mistake.
The Obama ticket can never call anyone inexperienced, because Obama is the least qualified candidate who’s ever run for president. It’s true.
Palin’s been governor of Alaska for 2 years, and already has racked up serious accomplishment that’s given her a 90% approval rating (the highest of any governor in the nation).
She’s smart, tough, hardworking, and a great mom (5 children, including a son who’s joined the military).
The Politico article’s also wrong in saying picking Palin won’t make Clinton supporters flock to McCain — it’s not as simple as that. Any Clinton supporters who are PUMAs or DeMcCrats or whatever you want to call them, already support McCain on some level, and are just looking for an excuse to jump over and leave the Democrats for good. Any excuse will do for some people. So, having Palin on the ticket — a woman who is qualified to be president, albeit not THE MOST QUALIFIED PERSON, PERIOD to be president (which is Hillary Clinton) — is just the excuse some people need to ignore generations of party affiliation and vote Republican for the first time in their lives.
We don’t think this would happen with Senator Hutchinson, or Carly Fiorini. There’s something different about Governor Palin, though. When you start reading about her, you can’t help but like her, even if you don’t agree with her 100% of the time.
She’s a great governor, a terrific person, and, in our book, the best choice for McCain’s VP.
It would also force a serious blunder from Obama — if McCain picks Palin, our best bet is Obama will feel pressured to pick Claire McCaskill or Kathleen Sebelius as his VP, which would be a disaster. There are two people who PUMAs truly despise, outside of the Dean/Brazile/Pelosi/Reid circle — and those two are Bill Richardson and Claire McCaskill. Sebelius did a terrible job delivering the Democrats’ response to the State of the Union address - but, more than that, any woman but Hillary Clinton would be seen as a major slap in the face to all Clinton supporters. So, how does Obama effectively counter Sarah Palin?
He doesn’t.
There’s no one he could pick that would match her.”
I do agree with HillBuzz, as I think Palin, would be great…my only concern is that she would not attract as much voters as Romney would. He already has gained popularity and would definitely win more votes for McCain. On the flp-side, Palin could attract plenty of women voters as she is a great example of a conservative woman and can help attract Hillary’s voters. Whoever is chosen, I will vote for McCain! McCain for President
