Will Colin Powell Endorse Obama?
Posted on July 1, 2008
My aunt, who has never voted in her life, loves to talk politics. She usually sides with the liberals and was really rooting for Hillary. In the past she has always been a good barometer of what the general public, middle of the road democrats are feeling. For some reason she doesn’t trust Obama, and though some would stereotype her as a racist since she is from the south, that isn’t true. She loves Colin Powell. She has told me before that she would get out and vote if he were to run. If he were to come out and endorse Obama it would go a long way for her. I think it would be a powerfully influential endorsement for a lot of people. I’m not sure what that says of Colin Powell that he inspires liberals though.
Robert Novak brought up the topic a few days ago and now this….
Peggy Cifrino, Powell’s spokeswoman, confirmed that the presumptive Democratic nominee and the retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff chatted June 18, one-on-one for about an hour at the Armed Forces Benefit Association, where Powell rents space…
Cifrino said that Powell and Sen. John McCain met the week prior in Arlington.
The blogosphere is abuzz with speculation that Powell could back the Democrat, a sign of his disaffection with the Republican Party and the Bush administration. The nod could, of course, also carry weight with voters concerned about Obama’s lack of foreign policy experience. In poll after poll, the only consistent question in which McCain bests Obama is on the matter of who is best able to handle national security issues. A Powell endorsement of Obama would certainly be a blow to the Arizona senator’s chief selling point — that he is better prepared to be commander in chief.
Allahpundit has some good commentary on this. Could this be the Democrat’s Zell Miller or dare I spark the speculation of possible VP? Now that would be big.

If Powell endorses Obama one must wonder how much of a conservative he ever was. Regardless of whether he (or anyone else) is dissatisfied with the Republicans, anyone who truly is ideologically to the right or even the center could ever vote for a socialist like Obama.
Don…To be honest Powell was never a “conservative”. Republican yes. He’s for Gun-Control, he believes in Affirmative Action, Pro-Choice, you know, the momder day Republican Party.
If this had been maybe 10 years ago, a Powell endorsment would have been huge. But I don’t think he has that type of pull anymore. You gotta remember, people on the left, and some on the right are still a bit angry with him, for going to the UN and for a lack of better words, telling stories, so we could get the UN to allow us to bomb Iraq.
I think this would be a bigger media storm, than a real story for the folks.
I never had to wonder how conservative Powell wasn’t after reading his autobiography.
Where he happily describes being on the board of his Episcopalian church — and the board members playing poker for money in the basement.
Church work.
!
LOL…Machine, I do that with a Priest, Nun and a few other lay people from my church. Well in the rectory. Nickel, Dime, Quarter. We have a great time. That doesn’t bother me a bit.
Put me on record as being one of those old fashioned christianist fuddy-duddies that think that it SHOULD bother you.
!
I am for Obama anyway, but would love Powell to endorse him. I believe Powell is conservative. You can’t get anymore conservative than he is. He’s a decent American, and if he does endorse Obama it will carry lots of weight with lots of people. And I welcome it. I welcome Powell with open arms.
