Lawsuit Filed Against Capistrano Unified School District for Teachers Anti-Christian Remarks

Posted on April 3, 2008

The family of Chad Farnan, a 16-year-old sophomore that attends the Capistrano Valley High School in California, is filing a lawsuit against the Capistrano Unified School District, for remarks that a teacher of the school made in class.

Chad Farnan, a 16-year-old sophomore, says the teacher, James Corbett, told his students that “Jesus glasses” obscure the truth and suggested that Christians are more likely than other people to commit rape and murder.

Farnan recorded his teacher telling students in class: “What country has the highest murder rate? The South! What part of the country has the highest rape rate? The South! What part of the country has the highest rate of church attendance? The South!” Farnan said he took the tape recorder to class to supplement his class notes.

The lawsuit claims the Corbett violated the First Amendment, which prohibits laws “respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

Corbett’s attorney, Dan Spradlin, claims his client was not trying to offend anyone but was attempting to stimulate debate.

When the Farnan’s brought the complaint to the school district it was dismissed, so they brought it to Federal Court where the U.S. District Judge, James Selna, ordered the case to go forward because he believed the case does have merit.

The family is willing to consider dropping their lawsuit if the schools makes Corbett take sensitivity training and he apologizes to the students that were offended by his comments.

His comments about “The South” and the deliberate comparison of crime rate and church attnedance, is way out of line and the fact that the school district simply dismissed the family’s complaints, shows a serious problem within that district and those in charge of making decision.

What say you?

The least this trash could have done is get it right! The “south” isn’t a “country”. And it’s the MID south, and Memphis specifically. He also failed to mention that said city is 61% “African-American”.

What a (insert four lettered word of choice here)!
