Kermit The Frog Hates Oil Companies? Next Muppet Movie Anti-Capitalist?
Posted on March 31, 2008
News has leaked out from the folks at Muppet central (The Jim Henson Company) that the next Muppet feature film will sport a story line that attacks oil companies. According to CHUD.com, the story will center around all our favorite Muppets producing a show to raise money to save their old theater. They need the money, of course, because an “evil character” is trying to buy the building so that he might tear it down to “get at the oil underneath.”
Why is it we have to turn everything into an anti-capitalism, anti-oil hatefest?
Even more alarming is the fact that it seems that the writer/director team pegged to head the project will be Jason Segel and Nick Stoller, the team that recently gave us the very R rated “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” One wonders if the Muppets will go from kid friendly to edgie and R rated? (I must admit that I would doubt the owners of the Muppet property would do that to their long standing kid friendly product, though.)
Here is how CHUD reported the story line:
Apparently their Muppet film is going to be incredibly old fashioned, with the familiar Muppet characters putting on a show to save an old theater (the theater from The Muppet Show?). The danger? An evil character wants to tear the place down to get at the oil underneath. It’s sort of current!
Yes, the oil industry is again being presented as an “evil character” who has no interest in culture or kids and wants to destroy everything in pursuit of the evil black gold to make even more evil oil profits. And, here we go again, another Hollyweird film that has to take beloved children’s characters and make of them anti-capitalist shills for the extreme left.
Nice going Henson co.! Way to ruin another bunch of our favorite kid’s characters.

Oil under the muppet theater?? We’ve found oil independency at last! Tear it down!
people will root for the oil guy
a third candidate could run on getting oil right now and win
Kermit as a green crusader? I just don’t see it. If they do it though, Miss Piggy and the Blue Eagle should be on the evil oil company’s side . . .
I figured it would be the grumpy old men in the balcony.
Life as we know it today would be extremely difficult without crude oil and its by-products.
There are more than 4,000 different petrochemical products. This is in addition to fueling our transportation system, heating our homes, driving our cars/trucks and on and on and on. The world runs on OIL.
Those evil oil companies have made the world a better place to live.
Stop the hate.
“The danger? An evil character wants to tear the place down to get at the oil underneath. It’s sort of current!”
If they want an evil character, let ‘em use Osama bin Ladin.
Having watched the first two seasons of the Muppets on dvd, Scooter’s uncle was shown as a businessman looking to bulldoze the theater for something more profitable. And remembering the way Sam Eagle was handled, I don’t think this is an instance of the Muppets ’suddenly’ turning liberal. I love the muppets, believe me, but there were a couple episodes I rolled my eyes at.
Let’s see.. energy policy bill written by Cheney with no oversight from Dems and only industry lobbyists giving input, huge cut in rail funding to ensure more diesel burning trucks on the road, diesel and gas up more than 3x since 2001, no new refineries built to increase capacity in US and record profits while we are screwed at the pump. Sounds like Kermit and the gang hit the nail right on the head.
Big Oil better run. I remember when the Muppet Gang took down The Electric Company. I can still hear The Count - “1 dead capitalist pig.. 2, 2 dead capitalist pigs…bahaahaahaaaaaa…!”

Last I checked, it’s the Congress’ job to write and pass bills, not the Vice President’s. So if there was “no oversight” from Dems, it’s their own damn fault for sleeping on the job. Cheney can write whatever bill he wants, it can’t pass without (currently-Dem-majority) Congress. So maybe you should get an education before spouting off.
Isnt tis anticapitalists stuff was what they were teaching kids in such left-wing cartoons like CAPRIAN PLANET
sadly for the obviously liberal democrat muppets [obvious because they can't even read the tags on their own rear ends] is that the muppets are made from oil.
yes…i said it. O-I-L.
what? you don’t think they are made of polyester or other petroleum based products?
and their DVD’s? what…you think they are made of corn starch?
Yackums,
I was referring to the energy bill written by the The Cheney Energy Task Force or National Energy Policy Development Group as it is officially called. Who by the way was sued by the GAO (Government Accounting Office) for it’s lack of transparency and secrecy. The bill in question was passed during a period of time when the Reps. controlled Congress and were rubber stamping anything the White House sent them. This policy was in fact developed behind closed doors with no Dems. present, with the input of energy company lobbyists and the details of those meetings have not been released despite filings under the Freedom of Information act.
As far oversight from the Dems., When a party controls the Congress they decide the agenda for that Congress. The Dems were powerless during the time that this policy was developed and considering the huge donations to Reps by companies like Enron (they made electricity, remember) the Reps were not about to start turning over rocks.
Don’t assume because I write a quick comment I don’t know what I’m talking about. This info about US energy policy is widely available but has not been covered the “liberal media”.
I notice you had nothing to say about the cutting of funding for rail transport or how there has been no effort to increase refining in the US which would lower retail gas and heating oil prices.
Just to clarify:
The Muppets are no longer owned or operated by The Jim Henson Company. The rights were purchased by The Walt Disney Company in 2004.
