Kosovo Declares Independence From Serbia
Posted on February 17, 2008
It is unpredictable how this will effect the big picture. I’m not an expert on this kind of stuff, but on the good hand its the will of the people, and as Publius Pundit says a loss for Russia in its battle to help Serbia enslave Kosovo. On the bad hand it complicates things and could very possibly create more conflict. Other than that, all I know is it will effect the folks that draw the maps a bit.
Really, Kosovo is a NATO/UN protectorate and has been for years. What this declaration effectively means, other than mapmakers having to re-color a tiny spot in Europe, I have no idea.
Well, other than Serbia and Russia being really, really pissed.
The question then is how pissed?
The Agonist celebrates and thanks Bill Clinton! As ignorant as I am, I have to think that independence from Serbia is something we should definitely be celebrating.
Given the status quo as it existed last week, this is the right thing to do, but that the situation reached the present impasse was a pretty serious failing. It seems likely that the main price will be paid by people in Georgia (former Soviet Georgia, that is) where Russia will retaliate by recognizing the independent of Abkhazia and possibly touching off some intensified conflict there.
I think that it is something to celebrate, and so is the loss Russia suffers from it. Lets just hope retaliations are minimum, and that the UN doesn’t agree with Russia. Violence is already breaking out as the U.S. calls for calm.
An explosion has rocked a UN building in northern Kosovo, just hours after leaders in the capital Pristina proclaimed Kosovo’s independence.
The blast, apparently caused by a hurled hand grenade, caused damage but no injuries, while another unexploded hand grenade was discovered near a hotel that houses EU officials.
Meanwhile, hundreds of ultra-nationalist Serbians rallied outside the US Embassy in Belgrade, prompting the EU to call for calm.
Kosovo declared itself as a new, independent nation at an extraordinary parliamentary session on Sunday - sparking a furious response from Serbia.
While Serb leaders rejected Kosovo’s “unilateral and illegal” declaration of independence, Russia’s foreign ministry called for an emergency UN meeting.
Like I said before, I’m not an expert on any of this. I’m not sure if this is a great thing or not. I figure its a complicated mixed bag. So, with that said…here is a completely different point of view to chew on from a commenter at Hot Air.
You wonder how so many ethnic Albanians (Muslims) came wandering into Serbian Kosovo from Albania, murdered the Christians and driving them out of their own homes. Then the whining Muslims Get Bill Clinton to save their Islamic a$$es and insist Serbia give up it’s land to the Muslim invaders. And some of you think it is a victory over Russia?
Tomorrow, Americans may be killing Christians to “defend†Muslim usurpers.
Crazy world gets crazier.
However, it isn’t a Muslim/Christian thing here. Its basically the same thing we did for Kuwait. It had nothing to do with Muslims and everything to do with freedom. It was the Serbs that invaded Kosovo to begin with, and it was freedom we defended.
Then again, the problems are more ancient than American involvement.
Ancient Dardania, the region now known as Kosovo, has been a focus of Serbian nationalism for the last nine hundred years, since the Turks invaded. I doubt we’ve heard the end of this.
I don’t have a strong opinion on whether Kosovo should or shouldn’t be independent, but there is a legitimate thing to fear from it and that’s that it may encourage separatists elsewhere into launching breakaway movements. Kosovo is majority Muslim; we might be seeing the birth of a new Islamic and Islamist state in Europe. Or we might be seeing the birth of a genuinely Muslim democracy in Europe. Time will tell.
…..
So where I come down on Kosovo’s independence is to hope for the best but be aware that it’s likely to encourage some of the world’s worst actors and jihadist revolutionaries to get on with their own separatist schemes.
I’m pretty much with Bryan.

We should be celebrating Muslim terrorists ethnically cleansing Christian Serbs from the cradle of their civilization and then declaring independence? Do you ever read JihadWatch?
I guess you’ll be rooting for the Islamists in the Paris banlieus, London, Denmark, Germany, and the rest of Europe in years to come, huh?
It is nothing like Kuwait. Kosovo was part of Serbia, Kuwait was not part of Iraq.
The muslims in Kosovo had been quietly retaking the land for some time through breeding and immigration, so finally Serbia snapped and tried pushing them back into Albania, which did not work because the US bombed Serbia into submission.
Since the UN ’saved the day’ hundreds of churches have been firebombed, and hundreds of thousands of Serbians have left the area thanks to attacks against them and their property. Massive funds have been shipped in from the middle east to build new mosques.
And all this was done thanks to Bill Clinton and Wesley Clark deciding to violate Serbia’s sovereignty based on an alleged genocide that never happened.
And what is with this nonsense about how a loss for Russia is a win for us. The cold war is over. Russia is not our strategic rival anymore. They are not an emerging power, they are the remnants of a fallen empire. They could barely handle Chechnya, let alone us.
Islamic terrorism is a bigger threat now. Kosovo will now be a breeding ground for lighter skinned terrorists.
A discussion on this would be very educational for me. I guess thats why I throw my thoughts on the net, and have a box for commenters. I appreciate all the informative opinions.
I still don’t like or trust Russia, though I agree Islamic terrorism is the biggest threat and the one that we should focus on the most.
Well Russia is definitely an enemy, just a weak, preoccupied one for now. Backing up Serbia was one of the few issues they were right on, because it was motivated by shared ethnic and religious heritage, not motivated by russia’s typical desires for expansionism.
One of these days, the US and Europe are going to have to wake up and start looking out for their own, because everyone else in this world is except for us.
Don’t forget John McCain in that statement.
To be honest, I’d rather have a Vladimir Putin in office than GWB. Putin at least loves his people and isn’t flooding his country with third world Muslims and Mexicans and declaring his countrymen racist for balking.
Jay, this is not a good thing. What happened is that the Muslim majority decided to split from Serbia in order to have a Muslim state of Kosovo. It will not be long before the Christian minority in Kosovo will be either exported, exploited or worse. The question is will Kosovo side with the West, freedom and democracy, or with the jihadists?
By the way, Dearborn, Michigan will soon have a majority of Muslims. Will it be ok if they declare their independence from the US and form a Dearborn Muslim Republic?
I think we should have a global day each year where countries declare independence. It seems as if it is in high fashion at the moment. More in my blog at http://angryafrican.wordpress.com/2008/02/17/lets-make-it-global-independence-declaration-day/
Kosovo is majority Muslim because of ethnic cleansing by the Communist regime against the Serbs. Heard of the KLA? The Kosovo Liberation Army is Islamofascist and is now being handed it’s American aided victory.
It’s not playing the apologist for the Serbs to point out that the Croats served the Nazis during WWII, that the claims against them for war crimes have ignored the war crimes of the Croats and Muslims and that we have in fact aided an Islamofascist terror movement to create another Gaza-stan right in the Balkans.
We are already seeing the consequences in the Islamofascist attacks in Macedonia and we will live to see the terror exported to Bosnia, Greece and yes… Serbia.
I am not an apologist for the Serbs, neither am I seeking to divert the public’s attention from 72 blow-jobs from an intern by bombing the nearest non-Muslim country of convenience.
If we had stayed out of the region the 500 year old struggle would be sorting it self out just fine and we wouldn’t still be there perpetuating the violence by virtue of taking sides.
Wow! All of this stuff took place back when Clinton was in office when I wasn’t paying very much attention to politics and world events at all. I caught glimpses of the news bits back then. I’m glad to have everyone educating me on this. Though I’m beginning to feel that I jumped the gun on my post.
Yep, coming soon to a neighborhood near you! Why are we fighting the GWOT when we’re just going to let these savages move in next door to us?
I, for one, am glad you listened. In the coming years, we’ll see a repeat of the Serb/Albanian conflict all over Europe, and the media will again (with the help of our elites) be portraying the Muslims as the poor innocent victims. Will we bomb our fellow Westerners again? It depends on who wins the information war. We bought the lie of the media and our elites hook, line and sinker last time. Hopefully, as the conflict with the Islamists heats up in Europe in the next 5 years, blogs like this will be able to uncover the media lies.
So far, they haven’t been too helpful. HotAir and LGF banned everyone who stuck up for the nationalist European parties, and LGF used a pathetic guilt-by-association to smear them as Nazis, which is completely untrue. Even if there are some bad people in these parties, you only have to ask yourself a couple of rhetorical questions along the lines of, “Who, exactly, has risen to the occasion to talk about the Muslims in Europe at this point?” to realize that there’s no one else but these European nationalist parties. Nowadays, nationalism is racism in the minds of liberals and “conservatives”, but even if that’s the case, there are no perfect allies in any conflict. We allied with Stalin in WWII for crying out loud.
If Europe goes Islamic because we did to it what we did to Serbia, we’ll deserve every last ounce of what comes to us here.
It is a shame for any country that recognize this puppet state. Creation of such a statelet is illegal and immoral.
First, Kosovo for Serbia is like a Philadelphia for US, like Gniezno for Poland. This is a birthplace of Serbia.
Second, it is illegal because is created without approval of United Nations and against Helsinki Act of 1975, about European borders and double standard applied to sides of conflict.
Robert Spencer’s latest post has links to a bunch of his earlier ones about the true nature of the Albanian Muslims. Worth a read.
Serbia has suddenly got smaller
This is is the picture how new “democratic” state Kosovo will protect Serb (and other) minority rights:
