McCain Lies About Romney
Posted on January 30, 2008
Update: Oh the irony! McCain considered benchmarks in 2007:
McCain said Thursday that he hadn’t yet decided on precise benchmarks. “They’d have to be specific, and they (Iraqi government officials) would have to meet them,†he said.
Asked what penalty would be imposed if Iraq failed to meet his benchmarks, he said: “I think everybody knows the consequences. Haven’t met the benchmarks? Obviously, then, we’re not able to complete the mission. Then you have to examine your options.â€
Now what was McCain saying about straight talk?
This is why Conservatives don’t trust McCain. This was probably the highlight of the debate. The quote of the night is Romney saying, “How is it that you’re the expert on my position?”
McCain may feel entitled to this cheap shot given his own courage on the surge. He also might think that his press coverage is so adoring that he can get away with anything, and Romney is so firmly branded as a “flip-flopper” that any charge will stick. But I think something else is going on. McCain has always given the impression of reserving his true scorn for his enemies within his own party. I have a hard time imagining McCain making this kind of dishonest accusation against a Democrat—it would be uncivil and dishonorable. But making it against a fellow Republican running to his right? No problem. On top of this, there’s the personal animosity McCain feels toward Romney. Indeed, in one of those debates in New Hampshire, McCain spoke warmly of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama at the same time he was giving off waves of hatred toward Romney.
How will this play? If there’s one thing we know about late-breaking events in this primary season, it’s that it’s impossible to know how they’ll play. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it back-fires on McCain. The attack succeeded in the sense that it tipped the conversation back toward Iraq, but at a potential cost to McCain. His most important political asset is his political character, his reputation for truth-telling and honorable politics. This dishonest low-blow—if it continues to get attention in the closing hours—could chip away at that asset.
Indeed, McCain looks like a fool.
Here is the exact clip/quote that McCain is trying to stretch into something it wasn’t.
McCain not only looked old and tired, constantly leaning on his arms and speaking in a monotone, he made a very poor showing in trying to falsely stretch a Romney quote from April into an endorsement of a withdrawal. That’s not only ridiculous, it’s blatantly a smear. As I pointed out earlier, John McCain in January 2007 actually did talk about ending the mission if surge milestones didn’t get met by the Iraqi government, making this a pretty dumb choice for a line in the sand. And even Anderson Cooper had to talk over John McCain to tell him he got it wrong.

How hard is that to figure out? Romney’s position is who ever he is talking to’s position. Which ever way the wind blows.
Well Vicki, in this case its clear what he said, and clear that McCain tried to take it out of context for political expediency. Thats to be expected of McCain though, isn’t it?
McCain accused Romney of being for a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq - WHICH IS A LIE.
Sure: Mitt mentioned timetables and milestones in passing during an interview (way back in April), BUT ONLY AS PRIVATE GUIDEPOSTS BETWEEN OUR PRESIDENT AND PM MALIKI. On a follow up question, Romney said he would veto any bill with a timetable. PERIOD.
SO: McCain is a liar. A piece of lying scum. A sack of old tired lying liberal crap.
AND ANOTHER THING: As a businessman I know this very well: to achieve goals - any goals - you must have timetables and mileposts. Otherwise there’s NO ACCOUNTABILITY. There is simply no way to keep people on track unless they know they goal and the time-frame. PERIOD. What Mitt said was common sense.
Now, maybe old angry farts who fester in the cloakrooms of the greatest debating club in the world (the US SENATE!) don’t understand that, but that’s the way of the REAL world.
And the real world is a world Romney knows and has mastered far greater than that old angry liberal puke McCain has or ever will.
I will never vote for McCain.
I wouldn’t care if he was running against Eugene V. Debs or Lenin! I wouldn’t care if he was running against Teddy or Kerry.
McCain can suck my elbow in Macy’s window and he still wouldn’t get my vote!
He doesn’t even get my vote for favorite Congressman who’s a former Vietnam POW - Sam Johnson does.
And a GOP led by McCain… it won’t get one freakin’ cent from me. Not one. Not a penny.
NOT A FREAKIN’ CENTAVO EITHER!
Thank you Jay, I hope Romney makes it all the way. I will never vote for McCain.
Just one more thing, McCain made a total jerk of himself at the debate. His behavior is disgusting and I noticed that Romney was the only one that the audience applauded. GOOD!
McCain McLies. His stubbornness to accept the truth on this topic is disgraceful and deplorable. It’s a shame when a grown man refuses to take responsibility and apologize for his dirty tactics and smear campaign to get political gain. I came across a quote the other day from you McCain during the 2000 election that states that you “would not take the low road to the high position for Presidentâ€â€¦.so much for that promise? I guess times have changed, just like your politcal agenda (McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman)? It’s time for the “staight talk, no walk” express to derail.
Who are you kidding?
A McCain Administration would no more hold the iraqi “government” to benchmarks than the Bush Administration. We would see another series of “our patience is not unlimited” messages, every six months, forever.
Just as we do right now under George W. Bush.
Remember, this is the candidate who speaks of war in Iraq for the next “hundred years”. He wasn’t kidding.
McCain’s lies won’t get the time of day from the MSM any more than Bush’s did during the 2000 campaign. John is this year’s fair-haired boy and can do no wrong in the eyes of the Beltway clan.
They brought you Bush the incompetent idiot. Now they’re going to bring you McCain, whether you want him or not.
McCain reminds me of an old lady with alzeimers that I used to visit. She’d be telling me a story from when she was younger, then break in the middle and ask me what my name was. She’d start the story back up, then break to ask me my name again, as if she had never asked the question before. This cycle would continue for as long as I would sit and listen to her. McCain is old and not very sharp mentally, as he can’t seem to get past the same phrases and questions even after they’ve been answered to everyone’s satisfaction except his own.
McCain is a Democrat in Repubican’s clothes. His true colors and lack of character were on display on Thursday when he lied to make Romney look bad. This is a nightmare for the Republican base. We need to vote for Romney, if we want to have a real Republican candidate to vote for in the fall. Otherwise, we might just as well throw in the towel and let Clinton or Obama win because at least it won’t be another imitation Republican at the helm, taking this country to ruin. And can someone explain to me why if you’re a prisoner of war, you’re considered a “war hero”?
McCain looks like a fool ???
The Republican party looks like a fool.
Your one true conservative Fred! could never poll more than 15%
Beating McCain will be as easy as beating Bob Dole. Barrack or Hillary in 08!!
I love tp see that true republicans hate McCain because independents like him. So the one guy who has a chance at winning a general election can’t get the base to rally around him.
And did Nell call Bush a fake Republican? Finally someone admits it. Not like my GOP friends at work. They defend everything that GW does, including his out of control spending and the Iraq war.
