Huckabee, What Would Jesus Do With a Flag Pole?

Posted on January 18, 2008

This Southern Baptist preacher knows how to rile up and divide the folks! Listen how clever he is on the issue of the confederate flag.

“You don’t like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag,” Mr. Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, told supporters in Myrtle Beach, according to The Associated Press.

“In fact,” he said, “if somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we’d tell them what to do with the pole; that’s what we’d do.”

Robert Farley wonders if this is in line with Biblical teachings. It must be in the same chapter that taught him how to pander, Robert.

Dan Riehl:

This is not the tactic of a man whose primary claim to fame and electability is having once been a man of the cloth. Huckabee’s piety seems matched only by his ignorance and imprudence. There’s good reason for concern over the type of president that would make. Not even a southern man needs this clown around this primary anymore.

Really, the confederate flag shouldn’t even be an issue of discussion in this run for president. However, it is divisive, and thats probably why the Huckster spread the fire.

Captain Ed:

This demonstrates that politicians still have not discovered that while the primaries have short-term, state-by-state applications, the entire campaign gets played on a national stage. This has been true of candidates in both parties who have pandered to issues in the individual states without realizing how their speeches sound to the rest of the country. In this case, it has Republicans around the country cringing.

Fred Thompson has it right, as did Mitt Romney. They both noted that South Carolina’s use of the flag is South Carolina’s business and promptly shut up about it. John McCain should have left it at that but instead decided to pontificate about it on the stump, but at least he got the issue right in terms of the national mood. Huckabee instead pandered to the defenders of a symbol that not only is obviously associated with rebellion, but also in the minds of most people around the nation, Jim Crow and institutionalized racism. For a man who had been talking about federal smoking bans until last week, Huckabee picked a strange battleground for state’s rights.

Hot Air: Huck’s mouth will rise again…heh.

Thanks, Huck. At least he put himself on the wrong side of the issue. That won’t help him when he has to campaign outside the south, or even outside South Carolina for that matter. Now if only he would kindly shut the Huck up.

Bob Krumm points out that Americans for the Preservation of American Culture are running pro-Huckabee ads in South Carolina.

I am kinda tired of people thinking preached Pacifism in all forms. This is why this “Would Jesus run for Office?” “Would Jesus get involved in Iraq?” Guess what, that was not Jesus’s role, Jesus assigned us a different role than his own.

Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered. He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. It is written: `And he was numbered with the transgressors’ ; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That is enough,” he replied. (Luke 22:35-38, NIV)

Jesus told his disciples to buy a sword….I mean come on..he knew that they weren’t going to use the sword to butter their toast with.

    Exactly, Daniel.

I might point out that the short sword was the handgun of the day.

    Don’t go about undressed.

Please I come from New York and we were proud of our rebel history from the Revolution war so I see no problem with those in South Carolina being proud of their rebel history. The North sure made a hash of things after that victory with their greed for power. The flag is indeed a local concern and can be solved by those who are more concerned about it. On that point Huckabee and Thompson agree. Huckabee is more vocal about it because he is actually trying to win the primary unlike Mitt and others.

Um, Daniel, Jesus told them to buy a sword so the prophecy would be fulfilled, not so they could fight like the rest of humanity. If you follow the story a bit further, you’ll find that after Peter cut off Malchus’ ear, Jesus rebuked him with “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” (John 18:10-11).
