Big Endorsement for Fred Thompson Tomorrow

Posted on January 10, 2008

Guess who I talked to on the phone today? THE Fred Thompson…and I actually got aggressive enough to give him some advice. Several bloggers were involved in a blogger conference call today with Fred. I got a few chuckles when I asked him about tonight’s debate and told him to be less gentlemanly and steamroll the others. I told him to call the others out when they say stupid things, and to expose them as the liberals they are. He hinted that tonight’s debate performance will be different than the past ones and that he has been looking at things a bit differently at this point in the race.

The big news was his tease that he will be getting a big endorsement tomorrow. One person asked if he would get a celebrity and he answered with a big “nope.” The only clue he would give is that they are a part of the Reagan coalition. Your guess is as good as mine.

Bryan Preston was on the line with us and has a good summary and roundup.

Dan Riehl was able to squeeze in a question too:

Dan — mentioned that in a South Carolina poll, only 21 percent of people identified themselves as conservative, making him wonder if some people who are conservative don’t see themselves as conservative, and thus aren’t receptive to Thompson describing himself as the consistent conservative.“I don’t believe those numbers.”

Hey…I made NRO’s campaign spot. They have a rough transcript…here is my quote.

Stephenson suggested the media had more power than we like. One of the bloggers on the call used the opportunity to give Thompson debate pointers, which… I don’t think is necessarily the right role for those of us on the call.

“I suggest steamrolling them… Don’t be so gentlemanly… Most of the people running against you are liberals.”

‘I don’t think the media picked one day we’re going to go with this guy for a while.’ Said the winners may be reflecting events around them.

Here I am on Captain’s Quarters:

On his competition, he agreed with one blogger who called most of his opponents liberals. Fred doesn’t think that the media picks candidates as much as rolls with whatever story arises and tries to build themes with them. He will try to draw distinctions between the other candidates and true conservatism in the debate tonight. Keep an eye out for that tonight.

I’ll let Slublog sum it up:

My take? I think tonight’s debate could be interesting, as Thompson suggested he was going to draw sharper contrasts between himself and the other candidates. My feeling is that he’s going to go after Huckabee. He also said to expect a very big conservative endorsement tomorrow. Overall, Thompson seems to be having fun on the campaign trail - perhaps it’s being down south in more familiar territory.

All in all, kind of neat. Never thought when I started this stupid blog that I’d get the chance to participate in a forum with a presidential candidate.

Powerline reminds me:

Thompson also declined to attribute the success of Huckabee and even McCain to the media. Instead, he credits them for “laboring in the vineyard,” which is what Thompson will do the rest of the way in South Carolina.

That response was solicited by me as well. I told him I thought the media picked McCain, built him up, and ran with him.

Liberty Pundit has a good roundup of other bloggers that were on the call.

So who do you think the big endorsement will be?

Maybe it will be Ronald Reagan. If Giuliani uses his name one more time in a debate Reagan might come back from the dead just to tell him to shut up…

I don’t know who it will be, but I do know he needs something BIG to happen, and soon. Good luck to him.

My question would have been this:

There were two votes you made as Senator that some conservatives tell me are deal-stoppers. One was the vote against impeaching Clinton. The other was the vote for McCain-Feingold.

Do you still stand by these votes or would you change them if you could?

He has already apologized for McCain-Feingold.

I’ll bet that the big endorsement is from George Allen. Here’s the link to my debate notes:

My guess….It must be Newt Gingrich who has been the only former conservatives who is active in any way. Bob Dole is a sleeper who lost so that would not be any big deal. Bill Frist from Tennessee is not active in any way, and Trent Lott of Mississippi is on the way out..
