Romney: I Like Mandates
Posted on January 6, 2008
I thought this was one of the biggest flubs of the night on Romney’s part, and one of the better moments of Fred Thompson. For some reason I haven’t seen this clip making the rounds much though. It gave me a good chuckle though as Fred says, “I beg your pardon?”
An account of the event via AP:
Romney did not help himself at one point, giving his opponents fodder to criticize him over the health care plan he signed into law as governor; it required residents to get health insurance. “I like mandates. The mandates work,†Romney said. Thompson did a double-take: “I beg your pardon? I didn’t know you were going to admit that. You like mandates.â€
I don’t harp very much about Romney, though it would be easy for me to do so. Out of the top contenders besides Fred he may be the least of the evils. He opened himself up for this one though.

I am not foolish enough to say that I disagree with someone who likes mandates as God Himself is rather fond of them and I refuse to critisize Him. To critisize a mandate you have to believe it is either evil or foolish or a combination of the two. Mr. Thompson probably believes the health care mandate was foolish while Mitt Romney believes it was good and wise. Neither is wrong as long as that was their honest feelings on the matter.
