Huckabee: Women Should Submit to Their Husbands

I promise I’m not going to change the name of my blog to Stop Huckabee. I still might have to get behind him if he ends up the lesser of two evils. The left are eating this up today.

It really isn’t surprising. A lot of Baptists believe in literal interpretation of this Biblical teaching. It isn’t like he had the votes of feminists to begin with. However, in far changed times, in a country where women love their independence, and liberation it could cut hard into the women votes. It’s cannon fodder for the left. Good thing they are holding their fire. It would be red meat for Hillary.

Fred? Where are you?

Question: For all the recent gaffes and controversies, should Huckabee try to hang on tight to his lead in the polls, or has the blogosphere just been talking to itself?

Support Mike Huckabee? You mean forsake almost every principle you believe in just to vote against Hillary? You mean join forces with a Bible-thumping self-serving hyprocrite who is now endorsed by Jim Gilchrist, the man who left the original Minuteman organization under a cloud of financial corruption to join skinheads and white supremists in another anti-immigrant group????

No. If the Huckster is the nominee, I’ll either stay home or vote for a 3rd party candidate. The party powers may be willing to sell out to every right wing rad group (coalition?), but I’m not.

Huckabee’s statement, and its play in the press, fail to quote the (flawed, IMO) SBC statement. Here it is, warts and all:

Article XVIII. The Family. The husband and wife are of equal worth before God, since both are created in God’s image. The marriage relationship models the way God relates to his people. A husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church. He has the God-given responsibility to provide for, to protect, and to lead his family. A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation.

Although the statement refers to Ephesians 5:25 when it sayd, “love his wife as Christ loved the church” it fails to complete the committment Ephesians 5:25 makes clear:

“25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (emphasis added).

Clearly, the real committment of a husband to his wife is to lay down his life for her. Sacrifice homself in service to her. And for that kind of devotion, any woman would be a fool not to return simple submission to his will. Hey! If he is willing to sacrifice himself for her, what does she lose? *heh*

Of course, the preacher boys of the Southern Baptist Convention don’t exactly like to final clause of Ephesians 5:25, because it places the onus on THEM to lay down their petty aims and goals and desires in service of their wives’ needs.

Huckleberry *heh* is blind to his own monumental ego, as is typical of all too many preacher boys who’ve spent years being vest pocket popes.

Huckabee for president? I wouldn’t call on him to lead prayer in a Royal Ambassadors class.

Why would any Christian take the Old Testament (or anything not attributed to Jesus in the Gospels) literally?

Re: the Old Testament, Jesus came and changed the laws. What was “eye for an eye” became “turn the other cheek,” what was “love your neighbor, hate your enemy” became “love your neighbor and your enemy,” etc. Taking the Old Testament literally is contrary to Jesus’ teachings, in my opinion. Likewise with taking any other book from the Bible and reading too much into it. Follow Christ - not Ephesians or any other book. Jesus’ sayings and examples really aren’t that cryptic. You don’t need anyone else or any other book to help you. If Jesus said it, follow it. If Jesus didn’t say it, don’t worry about it. As the Son of God, he was wise enough to say what needed to be said, eh?

As a Christian, Huckabee should concern himself with the words of Jesus only. Those are the only ones that matter! He’s not scoring points with anybody by quoting Old Testament verses that do nothing but regurgitate 1st Century BC attitudes regarding women.

So Huckabee disagrees with some people on the issue. Big deal. It is none of their business whom a married couple chooses to put in a role of authority in their household the same as it is none of their business who any other organization chooses to put in rolls of authority. The constitutionally challenged Civil Rights Laws aside.

PrivatePigg, you miss the point. Christians take the Bible literally because they believe it was written by the Holy Ghost through Paul, etc. Christ himself even quoted the Old Testament - would He have done so if he disagreed with what they were saying?
Christ never “changed the laws” (except certain aspects of covenants, such as pork-eating) (Matt. 5:17). “Love your enemy” was a concept existing even as early as Leviticus (e.g. 19:17) for society’s sake. Though at other times, God guided and directed the Israelites in wars for His sake, and I very much doubt Christ disagrees with His Father.
As for “turn the right cheek”, it was still an OT doctrine which does not contradict “eye for an eye”. Christ preached to the people, telling them to be good to each other (people-to-people), while God told Moses to use “eye for an eye” in exacting punishments (punishment fit the crime, state-to-people). Hence imprisonment good, kidnapping bad, death penalty good, murder bad.
That said, I doubt Huckabee would make a good president policy-wise. That’s my two (-hundred, surely?) cents.

Please vote for Mike Huckabee as all democrats are praying that he wins the GOP nomination. Do Huckabee supporters allow women to vote or do they just have their husbands (to whom they’re subservient) cast their votes for them?
