Report: Giuliani’s Mistress Used N.Y. Police as Taxi Service
Posted on November 29, 2007
Both sides of the story:
Well before it was publicly known he was seeing her, then-married New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani provided a police driver and city car for his mistress Judith Nathan, former senior city officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.
“She used the PD as her personal taxi service,” said one former city official who worked for Giuliani.
New York papers reported in 2000 that the city had provided a security detail for Nathan, who became Giuliani’s third wife after his divorce from Donna Hanover, who also had her own police security detail at the same time.
The former city officials said Giuliani expanded the budget for his security detail at the time. Politico.com reported yesterday that many of the security expenses were initially billed to obscure city agencies, effectively hiding them from oversight.
The former officials told ABCNews.com the extra costs involved overtime and per diem costs for officers traveling with Giuliani to secret weekend rendezvous with Nathan in the fashionable Hamptons resort area on Long Island.
The story turns out to be a totally false story. This practice was going on in my first term as mayor. It didn’t just happen in my second term as mayor. The police department paid for all of these expenses. But since the police department would sometimes be slow in payment City Hall would pay it first then the police department would reimburse every single penny of it and now we’ve been able to confirm that. So this was really, I know what this was. This story is five years old. It came out two hours before a debate. It’s a typical political hit job with only half the story told…
The fact is, that by doing it that way, it was more discoverable. Had it been paid by the police department, it never would have been discovered because their records are security records and they can’t be discovered. The reality is: all those agencies that you’re talking about, all of it was fully reimbursed within that year. They’re all in the mayor’s office. This was a way of expediting payment. All of it on the record, all of it discoverable, all of it going on for five or six years. And perfectly appropriate and three budget directors have asserted that but of course the press doesn’t cover that.
“These were all legitimate expenses incurred in protecting the mayor, and his police detail covered him wherever he went, 24/7,” Tony Carbonetti, Giuliani’s chief political adviser, said in an interview. “You just do what you do and the police go with you. That’s just a fact of life when you’re the mayor of New York.”
There are still many unanswered questions on why the money was moved around like it was.
The left are saying what he did was a felony. Rudy says it was all legit. I don’t know. Regardless, through all his explanations the accusation that Judith was using the police as a taxi service was never answered. Excuse away your own use of the security detail, and even your family, but it doesn’t look good if the city paid for your mistress travel to see you.
The reciepts included hotel bills at the Hampton for detectives on Long Island where Judith, his mistress, had a condiminium.
Rudy says this story won’t hurt him. I think it will. He didn’t deny anything. He only shifted responsibility. Accusations that the city paid for protection during an extra-marital affair will hurt him. Whoever released it a few hours before the debate was smart. It doesn’t matter if all the money was eventually reimbursed or not. Rekindling the fact he had an affair and used the city’s money while doing so is enough.
Once again, the rare occasion, I agree with Andrew Sullivan:
Look: if you’re cheating on your wife, you need two security details. Of course, one is going to be hush-hush. And the tax-payer foots the bill. A simple question: How does any sane person trust the power of the presidency with this money-raking friend of mobbed-up Kerik and accused child-molester Placa?
Betsy Newmark agrees that this will hurt him.
Right on the heels of yesterday’s Politico story about the weird billing of his security detail, this story will reinforce the image of Giuliani using public expenses to facilitate his love affair. I’d like to hear his explanation of why his lover needed a security detail. This sort of drip drip has to be death to Rudy’s campaign. I thought all this sort of thing would come out if he got the nomination and the Democrats started releasing their oppo files.
Let me explain it to you this way: when bad people are trying to kill you and you are required by law and common sense to have the cops keep an eye on you so the Mafia doesn’t give you an unlicensed tracheotomy, you’ve got two options. One, you can rein in your libido and adapt your lifestyle to the demands of public life; or two, you can let your freak flag fly and stick the public with the bill. (Which was “repaid”, from someone to someone else, you see, although the money seems to have originated in the Mayor’s office.) And, I mean, who out there among us hasn’t gone on an adulterous fling and stuck our boss with the tab, using a system of accounting so creative that we must defer to unspecified subordinates to explain it?
Well, let that man cast the first stone. That sleazy man.
I would say that I’m writing Rudy off my list, but I did that a long time ago. But thats because he is a big gun grabbing liberal.

Rudy is Hillary in a suit.
and he looks better in a dress than she does…..
Listen, if rudy doesn’t take his vows that seriously, how can we trust him to hold true to the very few conservative values he claims to back? What about the ones he has flip-flopped on?
Conservatives stand on principles, liberals do not….if you vote for rudy you are simply a liberal, no two ways about it.
I agree. I mean, he was sleeping with his current wife while married to his previous wife. I find it difficult to believe that the Church would grant him an annulment when it was he who invalidated his marriage. In other words, his current marriage is adulterous.
Having Rudy as our President would be no different than having Slick Willie post finger wagging news conference. We all knew that he was lying. And if we knew, every last foreign minister and every last head of state throughout the world knew. And if we can’t trust him, why should they?
You’re right, kender. I think it’s important to stop and reflect on those principals from time to time.
Republican Principles
Remember this as labels like “conservative” and names like “Reagan” are tossed around liberally over the next couple months. There are some worthy of them and many who are not.
Old story and not true are two reasons why this is gossip and a political attack.
Look at the source in the NYC controllers office.
All of the candidates have flaws in one form or another.
Remember only pundits are perfect. :o)
Only insofar as all humans have flaws. That doesn’t mean our flaws are all equal. Some people really have conducted their lives better.
We get what we deserve though. Do you want to elect the best person or do you want to elect the person with the best connections?
