Fred Thompson Tears Into Huckabee

Posted on November 5, 2007

Hat tip to Hot Air, we see that Fred Thompson answers his critics.

Huckabee’s statement:

“Senator Thompson’s comments on ‘Meet the Press’ were disappointing and disheartening for those who were expecting him to be a solid voice for conservatives. The marriage and life amendments are critical issues for those of us who have been on the front lines of these cultural battles. Sen. Thompson’s philosophy seems to be more ‘cut and run’ when it comes to these issues, rather than stand and lead.

Fred’s response:

Bryan states it well:

Thompson manages to pound Huckabee into a fine powder without ever coming across as harsh or even particularly angry. It’s as solid an appearance as I’ve seen Thompson deliver since the official announcement that he’s running.

Takeaway: Don’t mess with the Fred.

Thompson makes a good point about the difference between him and most of the others.

Thompson: “Thats where I was yesterday, thats where I am today and thats where I’ll be tomorrow.”

Fred is consistent.

Consistent? Maybe, but principled? No way.

Mike Huckabee is the only candidate that is both consistent and principled.
If you EVER worked for a pro-choice group (Even if it was just “my job” and “i had to do it”) then you don’t qualify.

I used to support Fred - but I realized that I was giving up on my true principles and I will not let that happen.

    Go Mike in 08!

Of course Thompson didn’t come across as harsh or angry, he was just lucky to come across as awake.

America is quickly realizing that Thompson is not who they thought he was, and Huckabee is really the one they have been waiting for all this time.

You know what I find ironic? The whole purpose of the pro-life movement is to protect innocent life AND convert pro-choicer’s to become pro-life. I find it extremely ironic that according to Brett Passmore’s comments, any convert to the cause is disqualified as a consistent and principled candidate.

What’s strange though is pretty much the leading candidates and even Mike Huckabee are trying to portray the Reagan persona as the conservative leader that he was. But going with Brett’s analogy.. even Ronald Reagan would have been disqualified under those pretences. I’m sure you wouldn’t believe that if Reagan were running again.

My goodness, I can’t wait until the nominee is picked so we can all come back together and rally under a single banner. Brett, I see nothing in Fred Thompson that shows he isn’t principled. He sticks by his federalist principles very well. That may not be one of your principles, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t principled. Don’t give up on your principles. Vote for your man Mike and stay true to yourself. I’m still undecided.

Fred Dalton Thompson is a principled Conservative. One can disparage him, but it doesn’t make it true. He was my candidate months before he Dems sought to change the campaign timeline, and he is my candidate now.

And, he will be the next President of the United States.

What makes you so sure Roger?

I like few of the candidates although I do favor a couple over the others, but I have to agree with Jay here, once the primaries are over everyone can get behind the one chosen.

All the candidates except Paul, in my opinion, are better than any of the Democratic candidates that I have seen.

Jay, nothing I have read, seen, or heard leads me to think FDT is not unprincipled. Is there something you guys know that I don’t? I’m open to any new information. The Office of the Presidency needs a principled leader, so if I’m wrong, I’ll be happy to consider any and all available facts.

Otherwise, the onus is on those claiming that another person is unprincipled to prove their positions (not the other way around).

  9. RogerC on November 5th, 2007 7:48 pm

Jay, I realize you were asking me why I was sure why FDT will be the next Prez.

I don’t know exactly why. Just seems that things will go his way.

  10. Jay on November 5th, 2007 7:58 pm

When will they start to go his way? He still polls at number two or three. Romney sunk a lot of money and time in the primary states, and somehow Rudy continues to surf on top. Why are people not waking up to how liberal Rudy is?

Fred Thompson has ruined his chances at the nomination. He is not good under pressure. Perhaps he could fill a cabinet position. He makes too many mistakes in debates and in interviews.

Mike Huckabee is the best chance for the Republican party in 2008.

  13. Jay on November 5th, 2007 9:29 pm

Mike Huckabee is a nannystater that wants a national ban on smoking and trans-fat.

Brett, I see nothing in Fred Thompson that shows he isn’t principled.

Take a closer look. Here are his stated principles. Here are his stated positions. It didn’t take but a minute to find his first inconsistency, so I bet I could find a contradiction to every one of his principles if I bothered to look.

Principle: Government must be…limited by the delineated powers in the Constitution.
Principle: Our Constitution innovatively guarantees our liberties by spreading power…between the federal government and the states.

Position: Promoting transparency to assess performance, promote accountability, and share innovations in education at all levels.

I just double-checked the Constitution and the word “education” still doesn’t appear*. Republicans used to fiercely oppose this department. I guess it’s cool now. So it appears Fred not only wants to keep the ED, but he also wants to keep fiddling with it.

Position: Encouraging students and teachers to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math—fields that are crucial to our security, competitiveness, and prosperity.

Yay for subsidies! Last time I checked, those were all pretty lucrative fields. Apparently, Fred believes they deserve even more. So much so that he’s going to take our tax money and spend it on them. I suppose it would be a good time to mention his “free market” “principle”.

Principle: Free people are best equipped to order their own affairs

Except, apparently, when the President decides that some people need to be “encouraged”.

And that’s just a sampling of the things he’s proud enough to list on his site. I can only imagine how many pages you could fill with a thorough debunking of his “principles”.

If you like his positions, more power to you. It’s your call, of course. But let’s be honest with each other about what he really stands for.

The main issue to me here is that Thompson needs to get his facts straight and be more informed. he once called Russia, the Soviet Union in 2007! I have listened to Huckabee and read his stands on issues. He has never supported sanctuary cities or amnesty. He wants a border fence and punishment for illegal employers.

What Huckabee said about Thompson was based on what he really did.
BUt, what Thompson said about Huckabee is not based on truth.
I wish Thompson had studied more about Huckabee rather than depending on hearsay.
