Weekend Points
Posted on November 2, 2007
I have no idea how many people read this blog on a daily basis as habit. I can look at the numbers, but I know that some are one time readers from google, and others followed a link from a more popular blog. Doesn’t really matter all that much. But…to those that read us, if not on a daily basis, frequently…I ask…what do you like about this blog? What do you not like about this blog? Do you have suggestions on how we could improve things?
While you ponder the questions…take a look at the left sidebar. See how low the mercury is in the Project Valour It thermometer? The Air Force team is way behind. If you can spare five bucks or more, know it’s for a great cause.

The most interesting entries are those about the ACLU itself - The generic conservative talk I can get anywhere, but the outrages of the ACLU are what I come here for.
Regular reader via RSS.
Prior to your deployment, you had a nice stable of intelligent regulars, so it was a good learning experience. Obviously, your readership plummeted while you were gone, so now it’s basically quiet place where I can come to practice one-on-one, with the occasional high-level discussion when you or a couple of the others are game.
Improvements? The biggest problem is that discussions die too quickly. Threads fall off the first page quickly and there’s no mechanism to keep the spotlight on the active ones. Any of the following features would help:
- Allow us to subscribe to threads
- List the 10 most recent comments on the front page
- Make lifeless threads fall off the front page faster, rather than bumping them based solely on the date/time published.
Do something about that, reward intelligent discussion, punish those that bring nothing to the table, and then just wait patiently while the site revives.
Oh, and come to terms with the fact that a position isn’t wrong merely because those “commies” at the ACLU support it.
Jay, there are a couple of things that I really like about STACLU, first and foremost of course is taking the damned ACLU to task for its many egregious overzealous so called defenses of the constitution. The reality is that the ACLU oversteps its bounds far more than it does good works.
The second thing I like, is you give us heads up when something is important. That helps me, at least, focus because there is so much out there that I can’t take it all in all the time.
Lastly, I gotta support the Army team, sorry amigo!
Edit: I meant that only some articles contain more editorial comments than facts.
I’m still trying to figure it out myself, Chris, but if you look at this chart, I’m somewhere between classic liberal and minarchist (which would be just a bit below anarchist).
Chris,
Would you repost your original comment?
The page ‘jumped’ as I was deleting spam and I accidentally deleted your comment.
My apology.

I like Jeff’s suggestions. I’m over here very frequently because I’m registered as a writer, but I have school, work and a lot of things that keep me away from blogging.
It would be nice if we could subscribe to comments in some way, there is a plugin for that - and I think it would help to keep the discussions going.
I really like the blog, I think all the writers do incredible work here, and I’m impressed that you got John Jay Ray to post here because his work is very impressive to me; his breadth of knowledge is wide and deep.
It’s always an interesting read over here and you have content moving very fast which is why people should be stopping by at least once a day to see what’s up.
You guys are on top of what’s going on…!!!
So thanks for all you and your writers do, Jay, I really appreciate all the work that goes into it around all of the other things you have going on in your lives!!!
We used to have the feature of subscribing to comments. I’m not sure what happened to it. Perhaps it was lost in one of the crashes. I’ll see what I can do to get that back. I’ll also try to bring back more focus on the ACLU. We branched out to other topics when the news got slow on the organization. It is kinda a two edge sword. It brings more readers to talk about more than just the ACLU and keeps things going when news on them is slow. On the other hand it takes away from us being a focus blog.
I don’t remember all of my original comment, but I was just making the point that I like facts more than opinion. I think, in any debate, it’s always more helpful to stick with logic and let facts play out for themselves than interjecting with a statement like “Well, I think all liberals are like this…” Granted, this is a blog, and that happens. I’d just rather take the highest road possible, even when it’s hardest.
For some reason, Jeff, I got the impression that you said earlier you were libertarian. But I don’t know if I imagined that or if you said that. Thank you for answering my question, though.
I don’t mind that label, Chris, but it might not be the most accurate. It depends on how specific you want to get. The whole top corner of that chart is colloquially known as “libertarian”, but the rabbit hole goes deeper than that.
Oh and in case you didn’t look at the chart, please know that there are some very significant differences between a modern liberal and a classic liberal. Pelosi and I don’t have a whole lot in common.
It smells nice.
