ACLU - Authorities Create “Climate of fear” by Upholding the Law

Posted on October 29, 2007

LA Times:

Flames were only one worry for some illegal immigrants in the fire zone. Equally scary were the crowded roads and evacuation centers, heavy with law enforcement officers, including U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Some wondered if they would be deported if they went to shelters.

“We decided that we wouldn’t go because they ask for your name and everything,” said day laborer Jose Salgado, waiting for work off the 5 Freeway near Rancho Santa Fe.

His friends working in the nearby tomato fields had different concerns, he said: “They didn’t know if they would have a job when they got back.”

Disasters can magnify the marginalized status of people here illegally. Seeking help can mean taking risks, and decisions can be informed as much by rumor and miscommunication as by facts and actual events.

In response to recent rumors, U.S. authorities deny that they have been rounding up illegal immigrants at evacuation centers, and Mexican Consulate officials in San Diego who visited numerous sites have found no evidence to support the rumors. “We are not arresting fire evacuees. It’s absolutely ludicrous to suggest otherwise,” said Lauren Mack, spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Immigrant rights groups and the American Civil Liberties Union, however, claim that authorities have created a climate of intimidation through neglect and such policies as asking for identification at some shelters.

What a freakin sob story this one is! The ACLU shills out the poor victim card for the illegal alien again. Those poor lawbreakers! Its just too predictable.

Hat tip: Conservative Culture who sums it up nicely:

Isn’t that the whole purpose of upholding the law. That those who do right are commended and those who do wrong fear those in authorities? The recent fires have brought a situation where help and shelters are requiring ID. Wow… novel concept to weed out the law breakers.

The article goes on to describe how other “immigrants” were petrified after hearing rumors of some thieves being arrested and deported after being caught stealing! Of course the ACLU claim that this was racial profiling.

The article is one of the most transparent sympathy pieces I’ve seen in quite a while.

What “innocent victim” lawbreakers are being arrested for arson on these fires anyway? I’m sure its racism and the ACLU will be around soon.

Liberals have to have victims otherwise there is no need for existence. In this case they didn’t have to look very far.
This one’s easy, it didn’t have to be created. What must be needed here is a little creative law bending. You know the law is very pliable. It can be bent to fit the needs of the moment.
This might be difficult though, turning law breakers into a victims especially if they have been sucking down the welfare teat. Boy, rather chico, this is a great country.

I guess according to the ACLU that law enforcement is to give medals to those suspected of committing crimes and to treat convicts like heroes.

I guess the tax dollars and out of pocket charity should go to
those who cross our borders illegally and break our laws in
doing so. I am soooo sick of the ACLU only concerning itself
with foreigners and illegals in this country who haven’t done
a thing to support our tax base or infastructure. The ACLU
complains about bigotry and racial profiling, but they deny
conservative christians their basic rights guaranteed by our
forefathers. What a crock! Nice blog by the way!

I do not like the idea of the Mexican authorities checking up on our law enforcement personnel. I feel so strongly about this that I believe the Mexican officials that came out to check on our law enforcement should be deported for interfering with our internal affairs.
