Obama Stops Wearing Flag Pin, Who Cares?

Posted on October 4, 2007

Its a headline at Drudge, but I’m not sure why.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said he doesn’t wear the American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for “true patriotism” since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Asked about the decision Wednesday in an interview with KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Illinois senator said he stopped doing so shortly after the attacks and instead hoped to show his patriotism by explaining his ideas to citizens.

“The truth is that right after 9-11 I had a pin,” Obama said. “Shortly after 9-11, particularly because as we’re talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security.

“I decided I won’t wear that pin on my chest,” he said in the interview. “Instead, I’m going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism.”

Obama was campaigning in Iowa Thursday, the second day of a four-day trip to the early voting state.

Yada, yada, yada, its a freakin pin!!! Who cares! Am I gonna question his patriotism over it??? Let me repeat. It is a pin. I’m sure that many are ready to protest and question his patriotism, but I’m not falling into that trap. I’m calling him out. I think that is what he is going for. Why else call the pin to everyone’s attention and make a grand announcement that you are not going to wear it? Its a cheap ploy for attention. Probably because he’s getting his butt stomped by Hillary right now. Speak your ideas with the pin or without, Obama. They are still socialist insanities either way around. I could care less if you wear a pin on your lapel or not.

Michelle Malkin goofs and shows us what Obama’s Presidential Seal would look like.

Talk about pandering to the radical base, he ought to run against Ahmadinejad.

What? You wouldn’t want to vote this ‘true’ patriot into the President’s chair. He is obviously morally superior to all of us.

Captain is on the same page as I am.

While we’re at it, let’s get rid of all the ribbons that get adopted for every cause. I’d like to end this fashion of wearing our hearts on our lapels and making that a requirement for demonstrating compassion for an endless litany of victims. In that sense, the flag pin at least had the novelty of supporting the entire country, and not just its victim classes.

If the presidential campaign can manage to rid us of that plague of color-coded caring, it might be worth something. In the meantime, wearing a flag pin on his lapel wouldn’t convince me to vote for Obama, and a bare lapel on a candidate who matches up with my point of view best won’t stop my support. It may win the day as the least significant issue in a campaign full of tiresome inanities.

Allahpundit notices how empty the gesture is too.

In other words, rather than simply say “I don’t want to trivialize my patriotism by wearing it as a fashion accessory,” he reiterates that he does wear it as a fashion accessory. The empty space where the pin would be is the accessory, and clearly noticeable enough that a reporter would ask him about it unprompted. Even dopier, by not wearing the pin, he’s basically ceding the iconography of the flag to war supporters. The smart thing would be to wear it and declare that it’s every bit as patriotic on a war opponent as anyone else.

Wow! And their first commenter says:

If he was really honest he would wear a hammer and sickle.

…heh…or maybe Mr. Hussein Obama could wear a crescent moon and star on his lapel?

So he wants to show his patriotism by not showing any patriotism….

    Like does this make sense?

And what is his true patriotism? Submitting to the UN?

This guys so full of [edited] “I don’t need to ware a pin to show my patriotism” as he stands in front of as many flags as he can get behind every podium give me a freaking break. He is just a smooth politician with his finger in the political winds embracing the perceived anti war sediment. Shame on him most people are wearing those to show there support for our troops not the war. It just like he developed a deep southern accent when he was in Mississippi wake up people.up up people.
