Gun Free Zones and Crime
Posted on April 22, 2007
The other day I wrote a piece vilifying the board of governors at Virginia Tech for the campus police being victims of the “gun free zone” policy. Well that wasn’t entirely accurate. However, I have no doubt that if it weren’t the decision of the utterly stupid Virginia legislature, the university would have adopted one anyhow.
There are many calling for a lift to the ban on weapons on state run universities in Virginia and elsewhere so that licensed students and faculty can protect themselves (and others) when some lunatic decides to go postal. Personally, I’d be happy if they lifted the ban and allowed the campus police to actually be police. As it is they are nothing but glorified meter maids whose primary job is to ticket students’ cars. Ooo that’s protection for ya, gotta keep us all safe from the student who parks in one of the many thousand faculty parking spaces that go unused most of the class day while students waste gallons upon gallons of fossil-fuels (call Al Gore before the polar icecaps melt and floods out San Francisco) looking for a vacant student spot.
