The Examiner: AIDS Group Sues Pfizer Over Viagra Ads
An AIDS organization sued Pfizer Inc. on Monday over ads the group says encourage use of Viagra as a party drug. The group said recreational use of the drug furthers the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, calls Pfizer’s ads for the impotence drug false and misleading. The suit echoes allegations made in an ad campaign announced by the group last month.
The nonprofit group alleges the marketing of Viagra has fostered an increase in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Studies have found the drug is used - illegally - in conjunction with crystal methamphetamine to form a party drug “cocktail.”
While crystal meth can heighten sexual desire, it also can impair the ability to have an erection, said Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “In order to satisfy that heightened desire, you have to take Viagra,” Weinstein told reporters.
Pfizer denied it promotes the recreational use of its blockbuster drug. In 2005, Pfizer had $860 million in U.S. Viagra sales, according to IMS Health Inc.
The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks to halt the New York company from running ads like those that have promoted the drug’s use on New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl Sunday, said Tom Myers, the AIDS group’s legal counsel. The ads, which included taglines like “Be this Sunday’s MVP” encourage recreational use, the group alleges.
The “AIDS Healthcare Foundation,” one of the pre-eminent truth deniers of our age, wants to blame Viagra for spreading STDs but supports the distribution of condoms in jail (they dubiously call it a “safe sex” program). I’m sure the wholesome folks in San Quentin who practice forcible anal rape are so concerned about “protecting” their victims.
This organization, despite doing some things of some value, ridiculously ignores the pack of crazed elephants stampeding around the tiny room by implicitly promoting the very behavior that is the primary source of this hideous disease — male homosexual sodomy. Instead of addressing the real issue, that AIDS IS a disease contracted and spread almost exclusively by male-male sodomy and intravenous drug use, this group barely even mentions it. It is like investigating a spousal abuse case and giving the husband a pair of boxing gloves. It is this kind of politically-correct dishonesty (redundant, I know) that leads to bad policy and more deaths than necessary. Instead of supporting “safe sex” jail programs (how idiotic of an idea is it that “sex” in jail is just part of the landscape, when what we are talking about is violent rape), they should be calling for better security to prevent anal rape (and any consensual sodomy as well — why the heck are inmates permitted to do this in the first place), quarantining of AIDS-infected inmates, mandatory life sentences for any inmate with AIDS who spreads it to others and other measures that will stop the spread of AIDS in jail and among those who become infected when prisoners are released and spread the infection they contracted while in jail.
By hiding the truth and continuing to promote the behaviors that cause the spread of AIDS in the first place, any good this organization does is negated. Of course, it’s not polite to call AIDS what it is — a disease spread almost exclusively homosexual men and IDUs. They prefer to keep the shadow cast on the truth by continuing to coddle the most kid-gloved and disproportionately wealthy and powerful political faction in America.
Here are the facts from the CDC:
As of 2005, in America there were approximately 988,376 AIDS cases. Of those, 762,193 were a result of male-to-male sexual contact, intravenous druge use or both. (More than 77%). 102,936 cases were women who reported that they were exposed by heterosexual contact. Every one of those case, obviously were caused either by a man who had contracted AIDS through either sodomy or IDU. 61,914 were men who claimed to have gotten the disease through heterosexual contact. Unlikely — the most difficult tranmission method for AIDS is female to male through vaginal intercourse, so chances are (and this was shown to be true — see the Fumento article below) that many, if not most, were not reporting truthfully. Bottom line: nearly every case of AIDS is preventable because nearly every infection is a result of a person engaging in activity known to be a high-risk source of infection. Why must we continue to gloss over the truth?
Of course, the deception has been going on for years. Michael Fumento has done a lot of work on this issue for some time and should be considered a prophet of common sense not an incovenient pariah by the “enlightened”. Read his piece: The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS:

The point is, this group, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, has enough time to file a ridiculous and baseless lawsuit in order to blame the spread of STDs on a TV ad while expending no resources facing down the real root of the problem. AIDS is a hideous illness that I hope to see eradicated, but that won’t happen unless groups like this one stop worrying about hurt feelings and start helping solve the problem instead of being part of the problem.
Africa and the resat of the Third World is a whole different ballgame…I’m talking about the US here.

If the point of this post is to refute the AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s assertion that Pfizer is somehow responsible for some portion of the spread of AIDS, there is a more direct and less hypocritical way of doing so.
Every human has the right to make choices. The flipside is that every human must be held responsible for those choices. Now there are some exceptions such as a rape victim or the victim of spousal infidelity, but the vast majority of AIDS patients contracted it as a direct result of some lifestyle choice.
There’s no need to get into the homo/hetero argument. It doesn’t matter who one has chosen to be sexual with or in what manner one chose to do it. All that matters is that person was aware of the risks and proceeded anyways. Roll the dice enough times and you can be sure the House will win.
I agree with you for the most part Jeff except about the relevance of the source of the disease and how it’s spread.
Unfortunately, most of these organizations seem to be making a choice that, in effect, makes people’s lives less valuable than their feelings.
Only an honest discussion can possibly yield positive results.
It does not promote STD as the perverted method gays have their perverted sex does not
require any

Girls are particularly vulnerable to HIV/STDs infection in all regions, it is thought that teen age is a period of multiple, rapid, and profound changes and transitions. Such concerns are particularly important for adolescent girls: Adolescent girls today are much more oppressed. They are coming of age in a more dangerous, sexualized, and media-saturated culture. They face incredible pressures to be beautiful and sophisticated, by chemicals which mean to encourage them to be sexual. As they navigate a more dangerous world, girls are less protected. On the other hand, the low social status of women in many poor countries encourages gender discrimination, domestic and sexual violence and psychological abuse, so that they have no control to negotiate safe sex.
Biologically, young women are more susceptible to HIV infection than older women. Because they make up a large proportion of the sexually active population of developing countries, a large proportion of new infections occur in this age group. A survey conduct by Rainbow Nari O Shishu Kallyan Foundation of three brothels in southwest region in Bangladesh, this study did point out that almost 16% of sex workers enter the profession before the age of 18 years, and 30% enter between 18 to 24 years of age. Approximately 10% of prostitutes belong to the scheduled castes minority people.
The HIV/AIDS programme specialist Mr. Mohammad Khairul Alam said, “several social norms and immature behavior fueled of this disease to scatter rapidly. There are several social components link to develop this harmful situation. Poverty-behind to force it, Gender discrimination plays a vital role; Frustration & risk behavior help to sink humanity resulting infection. The link between poverty & gender discrimination are help to decline socio economic prosperity. This link creates several anti social poisonous issues also. Such as trafficking to prostitute, sell sex for earn or living, break down family norm to create frustration and driven drug point. We notice easily that Illiteracy is the main watchword of all circumstance. So it is not easy to remove it from the society, several programs & strategy are needed to gain sustainable positionâ€.
In some cultures, young women are sexually abused by older men in the belief that they are less likely to be infected with HIV or even that sex with a young woman who is a virgin is a cure for HIV/AIDS. Moreover, young people are often less likely to have access to the information and means to protect themselves from HIV infection. For all of these reasons, UNFPA is right to make young people a focus of HIV/AIDS prevention programmes. In some countries, adolescents aged 10 to 15 should be a priority, as these are the years when sexual initiation occurs and sexual attitudes and behaviours are established. In these countries, HIV/AIDS prevention messages should focus on younger youth to be effective. Programmes of sex education and safe sex promotion for pre-teens and young teenagers have been successfully implemented in countries as diverse as Uganda and Sweden.
Recently, ‘Rainbow Nari O Shishu Kallan Foundation’ response to HIV/AIDS has focused mostly on three types of work: community mobilization for prevention through the promotion of fidelity, condom-use and abstinence; advocacy on access to affordable treatments, targeted at medicine producers and international donor organizations; and work to ‘mainstream’ support to AIDS-affected individuals and communities into poverty mitigation work. HIV/AIDS has good relation between poverty and gender inequality. Without decline gender discrimination, poverty, all effort will destroy to prevent HIV/AIDS or sustainable development of this sector.

“Almost exlusively,” huh? Even though 2/3 of women (who now account for 30% of new AIDS cases a year in the U.S.) get it by screwing men? Would it really trouble you that much to research your posts instead of making things up, or is the urge to lie and spew too great for you to overcome?
The research is all there for you, fool. Only one of us is making anything up…and it ain’t me.
According to CDC, to which I linked, women who have contracted AIDS account for about 18% of total cases.
About a quarter of those cases were a result of IDU, which cuts that number even more.
The trends don’t deviate far from those numbers.
As I pointed out:

For all the accusations you throw around about the ignorance of others, you sure put on good One-Man Parade of the [edited]. You might want to keep your little battles confined to your middle school locker room, because lightweights like you don’t belong in the discussion.
