Advice From The Captain On Surviving The Midterms

Posted on November 11, 2006

For those down and out about the election results, Captain Ed has some very sound advice on surviving the midterms and how to go forward.

Depression and anxiety is natural, but we should not wallow in it, because it doesn’t produce anything positive. We now have to work to push our agenda and policies from the minority, and that will be a tough battle. We will have to find ways to work with the Democrats, or we will have to give up and let them run everything. I’m not prepared to give up, nor am I prepared to act like this is the end of the world.

The American voters made their choice. Now we have to go to work, preparing a positive agenda for the nation, engaging the Democrats on issues where we can find agreement, and opposing them when we cannot. Gridlock will be likely, and that’s not a bad thing on domestic issues, but we cannot afford to be paralyzed on the war effort. That requires a large effort by Republicans to work with Democratic leadership — because we simply have no choice, not for the next two years. If we dig in our heels, we will leave this nation dangerously exposed to terrorists, and that’s neither responsible nor Republican.

His advice is right on target and the positive outlook at the reality of things we all need to acknowledge. I also agree with him in an earlier post about needing both sides, indeed all Americans, united if we are to defeat our enemy. I am still pessimistic on the prospects of whether the Democrats will truly show any real effort towards bi-partisianship on the issues we find important and the very real threats we face. I also fear that, as Michelle Malkin noted, any olive branches offered will be used to make a bond fire. But the moral of the story is that the elections are over and we have to deal with the hand that was dealt. With Democrats in control we will no doubt have a more difficult time with our causes, but surrendering is not an option and this is all the more reason to fight harder. I’m not optimistic that the Democrats will meet us half way on anything of significance but what it comes down to is not giving up. Its gonna be an uphill battle for the next two years at least, so get on your hiking boots and prepare.

Hey Democrats! You’ve got two years to step up and lead us in these dangerous times. If you make those two years about impeachment and investigations you will be defeated in 08. If you can grow up and step up to the plate and lead, then I welcome it. You are in the power position. Show us what you got.

Republicans legislate better from the minority. They legislate more on principle and less on politics. It will ensure a conservative president in ‘08, since true conservatives win at the ballot box.

Hope you are right. Main concern is National Security.

“That requires a large effort by Republicans to work with Democratic leadership — because we simply have no choice, not for the next two years.” The Captain.

The Captain is not looking at the who supports what. From what I know the Democrat leadership is full of extreme left liberal while the base of the Democratic party is more moderate. The Republicans can tell the Democratic leadership to take a hike and work with the Democratic base. The Democratic Control of either House Congress is not that strong and at least one of the Republican Senators who lost his seat was anti war and so is no loss as far as this issue is concerned.
