Project Valour IT

Posted on October 30, 2006

I have been a part of the worthy cause called Valour IT many times. Even though I hail from the Air Force, most of the time I ended up on the Army team, or the Marine team, but none of that matters…the cause is what matters. Splitting it up into military teams is just to foster a bit of competition. However, when John Noonan of OpFor asked me to be on the Air Force team I was happy to join and finally be on the team of my service.

So, before I start asking you to give some of your hard earned cash, I should tell you what you are contributing to.

From Project Valour IT’s homepage:

Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss, provides voice-controlled laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries or amputations at home or in military hospitals. Operating laptops by speaking into a microphone, our wounded heroes are able to send and receive messages from friends and loved ones, surf the ‘Net, and communicate with buddies still in the field without having to press a key or move a mouse. The experience of CPT Charles “Chuck” Ziegenfuss, a partner in the project who suffered severe hand wounds while serving in Iraq, illustrates how important this voice-controlled software can be to a wounded servicemember’s recovery.

Every cent raised for Project Valour-IT goes directly to the purchase and shipment of voice-activated laptops for wounded servicemembers. As of October 2006, Valour-IT has distributed nearly 600 laptops to severely wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines across the country.

As you can see here, the Air Force team are already off to a slow start. Please consider contributing to a worthy cause.

Argghhhh! The Army team is already starting a blogwar over this!

Silicon Valley also has an organization called SoldierFund.org to help wounded service men and women, but the needs are so great. I wish there were ways to help people get back to helping themselves. Certainly some of George Soros’s money would go a long way!
