North Korea Conducted Nuke Test

Update: A second test coming??? Wizbang via Reuters!

The chief of South Korea’s intelligence agency told lawmakers on Monday it was possible North Korea would carry out a second nuclear test, Seoul’s Yonhap news agency quoted one MP as saying.

The lawmaker also quoted Kim Seung-gyu, head of the National Intelligence Service, as telling a closed-door parliamentary committee meeting that unusual signs had been detected at a North Korean town in the afternoon.

North Korea announced earlier in the day it had successfully conducted an underground nuclear test.

Update: FOX:

South Korea — North Korea successfully tested of a nuclear weapon late Sunday night, a senior Bush administration official confirmed to FOX News.

The official said, however, that initial readings from South Korea reported only a 3.58-magnitude seismic reaction, which is smaller than what would be expected from the 4-kiloton explosion the Axis of Evil nation sought. The put the bomb’s capabilities in context, a 20-kiloton explosion could conceivably kill 200,000 people.

Someone tell Bush to push the red button!

Update: Not looking good:

In Seoul a foreign ministry spokesman said South Korea’s intelligence agency has detected a 3.58-magnitude seismic tremor, following North Korea’s announcement of a nuclear test.

Update:

Fox again– the U.S. geological survey reports that there is some seismic activity coming in now, but no location or magnitude. A team of geologists will have a statement in half an hour.

Take a look at the charts yourself.

Atlass Shrugged:

Every Democratic member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has voted against allowing Bolton the up-or-down vote that he was denied last year. Who do they want in there? Madeline not at Albright?

Not a lot of information on this yet…will keep you informed and updated as this develops.

Here is the report across the line.

A South Korean government official said there is information that North Korea might have conducted a nuclear test Monday morning, Yonhap news agency said.

Bosun tells us why we should worry:

Along with DPRK, Pakistan and Iran have jointly worked with DPRK on similar missile projects. The Iranian Shahab-5/Shahab 6 is similar in technology and in design to the Taep’o-dong 2. There is much more that meets the eye on this problem. (Source: Missile Threat.Com)

30 Years of miscalculations

For the past 30 years, as the international community idly sat wringing its hand, DPRK pursued the development of their ever expanding ballistic missile program (and apparently their not so covert) nuclear weapons program. Mismanagement and miscalculation has occurred on every American Presidents’ watch for probably the past 30 years. DPRK has devoted itself to developing weapons and delivery systems under the noses of the world community. Now DPRK is going to test their nuclear weapon? What next? Are they going to collude with their “partners” to hold the free world hostage?

North Korea said Monday it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test. The country’s official Korean Central News Agency said the test was performed and there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

Allah Pundit is on it too.

Bryan Preston’s thoughts…read the whole thing.

Diplomacy isn’t going to stop North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. That’s the bottom line. North Korea sees nukes as its last best hope of survival, while the rest of the world (minus China and possibly Russia) see North Korean nukes as an intolerable threat. I don’t see a peaceful end to this. Either China deals with Kim, or we do. And it doesn’t look like we will.

If this report turns out to be true we can count on North Korea to use it as leverage. They will now scream it from the mountain tops that they are a nuclear power! What will we do about it? Probably nothing of any significance but a lot more cheap talk…..especially if we let the loony left take control of the House and Senate.

Texas Rainmaker wants everyone to remember why we are in this situation to begin with. The photo above helps to do that.

Update (12:01 AM): via Political Pitbull:

FOX is now reporting that a senior Bush administration official has confirmed that there was a test but the official also said that the explosion did not meet the 400 kiloton goal which North Korea had expected. Also, North Korea apparently warned China of the test and China warned the United States.

You can’t negotiate with insane people. This should be a lesson on how to approach Iran…sadly I don’t think it will be. The U.N. will act as always and do nothing.

OPFOR:

My source on the peninsula says that South Korea is -understandably- having a cow, same with Japan. And think of all the nations that are within the fallout range of a green-glowing, radioactive Korea. Russia, China, Vietnam, Japan, Cambodia, Taiwan, the list goes on.

And North Korean sugar-daddy China has even more reason to be seeing red (no pun). The last time the North pulled a stunt like this (launching an IRBM over the Japanese mainland) it sparked a massive Japanese defense buildup and lit a fire under America’s tail to get a missile shield operational, complicating Chinese plans for Taiwan.

Back then it was just one errant missile. Today we’re talking about a nuclear weapon. A nation killer. A world killer. And it’s in the hands of a man whose sanity is suspect and is worshipped as a god by an army of over one million.

Korea is simply too small of a theater to be playing with nuclear toys. You can bet your britches that the far east paradigm just shifted, big time. Let the arms race begin…

The Rottweiller weighs in:

So what to do? Well, we can tell you what this current Administration won’t do, which is anything falling under the category “measures that might be even remotely useful.” And, quite frankly, we our Imperial Self are a bit at a loss.

Sure, we’ll have the usual barrage of wagging fingers, diplomatic notes of concern, condemnations in the strongest terms and maybe they’ll even throw in a useless UNSC emergency meeting or two as well, just to make it look as if they’re doing anything at all.

Bryan Preston’s thoughts on the reactions of Tokyo. Very interesting. Remember that Japan is the ONLY country EVER to be nuked. Yes, yes…I know…it was us…but don’t think they are not the MOST concerned here.

From MKH:Update: Mark it down. 12:26 a.m., an hour and a half into a likely international crisis, DU questions the timing in a thread named, I kid you not, “October Surprise. How Convenient.” Priorities.

Rove strikes again!
Pink Flamingo:

Well gee not sure why anyone would be upset by this latest development. It’s not like North Korea would ever sell its nuclear weapons to any terrorists. Because no doubt if they did and a terrorist detonated it in Manhattan we would nuke N. Korea. Yea that’s exactly what we would do. No doubt all the terrorists and N. Korea are real impressed with our threats so far. But you say man oh man we would be a lot more serious if someone detonated a Nuke.

Update: Could it have all been propaganda? Blast Site: 129.10 40.81; Blast Strength: 550 Tons of TNT
Real Ugly American has some serious questions that we need answers for.

Whew, buddy. Is this breaking or speculating by South Korea? There are enough sensors up, should be able to see a spike. And, geological observatories should see a signature on their earthquake monitoring equipment. There are several on-line.

Earlier this week, 5 NK soldiers probed the DMZ. This is not good.

    N. Korea could mean they tested it with a Geiger counter to see if it WAS a nuke, with N Korea, you never know…

If there is no radiation detected, then I say it is hoax.

I have mentioned the history of the DPRK weapons delivery program. Albright and the Clintonista administration mishandled the international scene for 8 years. However, this problem has been festering for over 30 years.

The mistake of every administration has been atrocious.

So, what are we going to do about it. And standby for the liberalistas and donk lefti to make appeaser and apologist solutions to this problem. I doubt that this good old world has much time left judgeing on the number of State Department SNAFUS that have happened since the peace love and rock and roll generation stepped into the batter’s box. I am one of them in that age group, so, don’t get defensive.

While Bill did not have sex with that intern, our leaders have been having sex with the pooch for 30 years.

What are we going to do about it? Probably not much until Kim Jong-Il sees weapons to Cuba, Venezuela, and Al-Qaeda.
