Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page, according to a congressional official.
Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election until the e- mails surfaced in recent days.Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence.
Foley’s election opponent, Democrat Tim Mahoney, has called for an investigation.
Wow! Here’s more:
A spokesman for Foley, the chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, said the congressman submitted his resignation in a letter late this afternoon to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.
Hours earlier, ABC News had read excerpts of instant messages provided by former pages who said the congressman, under the AOL Instant Messenger screen name Maf54, made repeated references to sexual organs and acts.
Apparantly he freaked this kid out chatting with him and asking for a photo. Foley was reported as to saying earlier he was just “overly friendly”, but it really raises my concern more now that more details have emerged.
I’m agreeing with Allah on this one:
That’s another pickup for the Dems in the House. Can’t say I’m sorry about this one.
He might need to call the ACLU for this one.
Sister Toldjah says good riddance.
After stating his shock Gay Patriot advises:
I am interested in seeing how the facts play out before casting judgment on anyone involved.
Wise advise, even if innocent these kind of accusations stick with people forever. Yes, innocent until proven guilty, but he it sure looks like Trouble is down the road on this one.
Lawhawk nails it in a nutshell:
Conduct unbecoming anyone, let alone a member of Congress who also happened to be the chair of the caucus on Missing and Exploited Children.
Indeed.

The leak was obviously political being timed like it was but the Republicans and also at blame here for not discoursing Foley from running or not funding an opponent in the primary as they have known this 10-11 months. Their excuse is they did it at the parents request but that does not wash as they could have done what I said above without alerting anyone. If his conduct is a crime then he should be charged for it. Foley is a pro choice Republican in a state that is pretty much liberal despite voting for Bush. Hopefully he will be replaced by someone who does not back genocide.
