Kofi Annan Needs To Read The Agreement
Posted on August 19, 2006
Kofi Annan indicates that the Israeli raid in Lebanon was a violation of UN Resolution 1701:
“The secretary-general is deeply concerned about a violation by the Israeli side of the cessation of hostilities as laid out in Security Council resolution 1701,” said a spokesperson on the UN website.”
Maybe the Secretary General should pull out Resolution and read the text:
“the immediate cessation by Israel of all offensive military operations;”
It is very clear that the raid in question was a defensive military operation to prevent Hezbollah from re-arming which is covered by 1701:
“between the Blue Line and the Litani river of an area free of any armed personnel assets and weapons other than those of the Government of Lebanon and of UNIFIL”
Did Israel attack an arms cache of the Government of Lebanon? Hmm, maybe Kofi is using some of that “liberal nuance?”

Israel will have to try diplomatic means to disarm Hezbollah. They agreed to the cease fire and now they need to live with its terms. It is their call and maybe they still need to play the bad cop to the Lebanese government’s good cop.
