Patriot Post Asks: Anyone for Terrorist Profiling?

Mark Alexander provides a multiple choice exam in common sense. His intro:
To ensure we Americans never offend anyone — particularly fanatics intent on killing us — law enforcement and security screeners are not allowed to “profile” people in public places or security checkpoints. However, they will continue to perform random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, Secret Service agents who are members of the President’s security detail, 85-year-old congressmen with metal hips and even Medal of Honor recipients. But targeting Middle Eastern male Islamists between the ages 17 and 40 constitutes “ethnic profiling.”

Here’s what’s new this morning in the terror plot to bring down several US fights from the UK…
More suspects have been arrested— 24 people have been arrested so far, including five in Pakistan.
British authorities say the suspects in a foiled terror plot were only two days away from a dry run.
Most all of the suspects have Muslim names – Most live in London — They range from age 17 to 35. Two of the suspects were white middle class young men who had just converted to Islam and all of them arrested in England have had their assets frozen thanks to new terror laws there.
All of them are currently being questioned by authorities in Scotland Yard.
Though not confirmed by Scotland Yard, it’s being reported that 5 suspects tied to the terror plot are being sought in the US.
Three of the alleged ringleaders of the foiled airplane bomb plot have been identified by Western intelligence agencies involved in unraveling the plot.
Two of them are believed to have recently traveled to Pakistan and were later in receipt of money wired to them from Pakistan, reportedly to purchase tickets for the suicide bombers.
Sources identify the three, who are now in custody, as:

–Ahmed al Khan

The problem with not worrying about WT’s is that they exist and are just as dangerous as Islamic terrorists. The way I see it is if I die at the hands of a WT then I will be just as dead as if I died at the hands of an Islamic terrorist. I think that when we leave anyone out then our enemies will strive to use that hole in our defense to get at us.. Drug smugglers tried to smuggle drugs that were sewed into live puppies. Don’t you think terrorist are as inventive and they will sacrifice their kids in the name of their false god.

Of course if we uncover a plot by some other group, it should be pursued with great vigor. But reality is what reality is and the PC approach of stripping even Al Gore down to his pasties is a ridiculous exercise that may be just enough of a distraction to get us killed by something we shouldn’t have missed while spending so much time trying to bolster everyone’s self-esteem. One of the biggest bumbling failures in the multitude of such in the Clinton White House was to declare that the greatest threat to our security was white supremacist groups…all this while the WTC had already been bombed, Khobar towers were about to fall…and Johnny Jihads all the world were plotting our demise.
Yes, the White Trash wanna-be militia man does exist, but the threat is de minimis and isolated as compared to the threat from “Middle Eastern male Islamists between the ages 17 and 40.”
The Mike Wallace love-fest was sickening. He said Iran’s leader as “good looking in a strange way” . . . is that better than “strange looking in a good way?” It would have been nice if he would have pressed him on his public statements about annihilating Israel.
And yes, it is time for profiling! Percentage of terrorists who are young male muslims: 100.
The problem with racial profiling is that focusing on a sub-set of the population leaves huge security holes for terrorists to exploit. They will just recruit more people like John Walker Lindh who will walk right through security because they don’t fit the profile of “Middle Eastern Islamist males between the ages of 17 and 40″. Random searches, while inconvenient to some people are far more effective at stopping terrorism.
OK…so why, after five years of cavity searching your grandma does the threat continue to be from “Middle Eastern male Islamists between the ages 17 and 40?” Are you saying that this is a triumph of your worldview? Johnny Taliban and the three retards in London represent a miniscule number. You lack common sense, you lack context, you lack will. Do you even care that Western civilization is in REAL danger? Or…better question, do you acknowledge this truth?
Again, Kotex, you display in neon billboard lights the weakness of the Left. Despite all the evidence right in front of your face, you still deny reality, using a paper by some college kids four years ago as your backup.

I have seen the Middle Eastern people and a number of them could pass as Europeans especially if they decided to die their hair blond. Their accents might give away the gig but a number of the terrorist were home grown in the liquid bomb scheme and one was even a convert to Islam.
There are a number of black Muslims in the U.S. but I do not believe they are suicidal.
I would not put it past these terrorists to employ an old woman or a child if they thought it would work. They used women in bombing two planes in Russia.
Glib, as always you’re doing an excelent job of living up to your moniker. I present a reasoned arguement of why racial profiling is not productive and you respond with fippant remarks and insults. You accuse me of denying reality when you are the one with no rational arguement to back up your position. Come back when you are ready to discuss this like an adult.
And what argument have you presented c-tx? You make a claim, “backed-up” by a college research paper and then position yourself as some sort of intellectual giant. Please.
Yes, it is possible that terrorists would adjust their tactics if we were to take our security seriously. But why deal with hypotheticals when we know where the threat comes from NOW. Why limit the number of men of a certain background you screen per flight — isn’t that leaving a “hole?”
I am not saying that racial/ethnic profiling is the ONLY way — there are behavioral cues and other factors that may be used. My problem is that in order to be “polite” by not targeting a “sub set” of the population, we are putting ourselves in greater danger. You talk about leaving a hole…how does it serve our interest in the preservation of innocent life when we pull aside someone, like Al Gore, who we KNOW is not a terrorist threat JUST to make it appear that we are being even-handed?
You just can’t seem to get it through your skull that more than one method may be used to assess a threat. The difference between us is that I do not want to take one common sense option completely off the table because someone’s feelings might be hurt.
You’re willing to trade lives for someone else’s hypothetical self-esteem. How’s that on the conscience?
All we have to do is look at the REAL reason the ACLU was founded to see why they oppose this.
Glib, you are correct for once when you said terrorist will adjust their tactics that is exactly why profiling does not help. Once you start excluding a segment of the population because they don’t fit the profile, terrorists will exploit this to our detriment. As the MIT student paper showed, once they find someone who doesn’t get flagged for extra attention, they are almost guaranteed that that person will pass through the next time regardless of their intentions.

We would adjust our tactics to take into account behavior. The Israelis have a program that is supposed to be effective in detecting individuals with a hostile intent who can be questioned more closely. There is also training that is supposed to accomplish the same purpose. They both sound good to me though I trust a human detector who is doing his/her job more than an electronic one.
I am still concerned about mules. You could insert an explosive in an old person’s walker and they might never have a clue that it has been done. I have also heard of parents hiding dope in a babies diaper. Such an attempt would probably be a low probability but it could be accomplished.
