ACLU Strikes Down Its Own Proposal To Limit Free Speech of Members
Posted on July 11, 2006
Stop The ACLU applauds the ACLU for striking down its own proposal to silence the free speech of its own members. An ironic victory for free speech at the ACLU!
A committee of the American Civil Liberties Union’s National Board of Directors recently withdrew proposed guidelines that have been criticized as limiting dissent by Board members. We will ensure that any description of Board members’ obligations to the ACLU accurately reflects the ACLU’s abiding commitment to the free speech rights of all, including ACLU Board members.
They have decided to withdraw certain passages from their proposed guidelines that were criticized. Why those passages were ever considered by an organization that claims to be committed to free speech isn’t really answered very well. However, enjoy the applause from Stop The ACLU! You probably won’t get it very much.
