Lieberman Might Run As Independent

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman announced today he will petition for a place on the November ballot as an “independent Democrat,” giving him a chance to stay alive politically should he lose an Aug. 8 primary for the Democratic nomination.
Lieberman, 64, a three-term senator whose outspoken support of the war in Iraq has brought months of grief and inspired a strong primary challenge from Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont, announced his decision this afternoon at a brief press conference at the State Capitol.
I think it is a good move for Lieberman to distance himself from the far left. I have long respected Lieberman as an independent kind of person anyway. He has already distanced himself from the majority of democrats anyway by standing on his convictions no matter what the popular far left cry was. If I had to choose between Lieberman and someone like McCaine, I very well might pull the lever for Lieberman. Of course I would have to listen to what each one had to say about the issues I hold important. He is one of the few democrats I respect.
The far left have already shut Lieberman out anyway. Dan Riehl notes that the far left fringe may have already doomed the democratic party, and the possibility they may be fading away. If that is the case, the move by Lieberman to run as an independent will work to his advantage. The far left are already crying that Joe has jumped ship! If you don’t tow the anti-Bush, anti-war defeatism crowd you are just not hip to the movement I guess. I applaud Lieberman for standing on his own convictions and beliefs. I’m not sure what his chances are at this point, but you have to respect the guy…in my opinion.

If the Democrats put a far left canidate up and Lieberman does not run they may well hand the state to a Republican.
Poor Lieberman, I kind of like the guy. Knowing Kos and crowd can’t stand him, I checked his site earlier today and found 23 mentions of Lieberman on the homepage alone!
