Senate Debates Flag Burning Amendment
The U.S. Senate could vote later this week on a constitutional amendment that would ban flag desecration.
“I think of the flag as a symbol of what the veterans fought for, what they sustained wounds for, what they sustained loss of limbs for, and what they sustained loss of life for,” said Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa.
Concerned voters should consider lighting up their senators fax machines, email, and voice mails to let those senators know where voters stand. Both sides of the amendment claim that the amendment has 66 votes. However, some Democrats called the debate the latest example of (Republicans) scoring points with conservative voters in the midterm elections. Some liberal Dems will do anything to spin away from a Flag Burning Amendment.
It is interesting that Democrat Senator Jay Rockefeller was a co-sponsor of the amendment.

I am not sure how I feel about this. While I loathe people who disgrace our country by burning its flag in protest, doesn’t the free speech amendment allow for this form of protest? Congress really should be working to pass some more meaningful legislation.
