ACLU Calls on President Not to Deploy Military Troops to Deter Immigrants at the Mexican Border
Posted on May 15, 2006
After listening to Bush’s speech on immigration, most of the right side of the blogosphere is disappointed. There were a few things however that I do agree with. It is no suprise that everything I thought was a good idea, the ACLU have come out against.
There will be plenty of pundits out there telling you the many, many flaws in Bush’s immigration reform plan. I am going to point out the few things that are good ideas, and positive steps forward….all of which the ACLU disagree with. Hey, I am not buying Bush’s B.S., but I’m not going to buy the ACLU’s either.
Deploying the National Guard: Even though they will only be temporary and acting as a stopgap force until the federal government can hire more civilian contractors to fill the needed positions, it will still act as a good detterent. It may be too little, too late, but it is a step in the right direction for border security…even if it is only a baby step. So here is one good idea, and of course the ACLU is against it.
The following can be attributed to Anthony D. Romero, ACLU Executive Director:
“Turning immigration enforcement policy into another military operation is not the answer. The president’s proposed deployment of National Guard troops violates the spirit of the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the military from getting into the business of civilian law enforcement.
Excuse me? Repelling an invasion by a foreign nation is a civilian duty? Mexico is invading us one illegal at a time. It only makes sense to use the military to help stop the invasion.
The tamper proof employment card:
“In addition, the president’s proposal for a so-called tamper-proof employment ID card is both unworkable and unwise. It is unworkable because any card can be forged, stolen or counterfeited. And it is unwise because it will not deter people from working illegally and it will certainly put us on the path to a national ID card system, which will inevitably be used to control the activities of every American.
Break out the tinfoil hats folks! Are these people wearing their wet turbins too tight.? The next thing you know, the government will be implanting us with mind controlling microchips and using weather machines to guide hurricanes to get rid of poor black people in New Orleans!
The insanity continues, as they can’t resist throwing a few jabs in at our military.
“Our government and people have long recognized that federal law enforcement officers are the best equipped and trained to deal with these kinds of civilian law enforcement needs. Soldiers are trained to kill the enemy, and they lack the training to conduct proper law enforcement. Furthermore, they lack training to respect and protect border community residents’ civil liberties and safety. History has shown the dangers of using the military to engage in domestic law enforcement activities.
I have to say that the ACLU’s view of the military is quite disturbing. They go on to cite one incident in 1997 where a goat herder was accidentally shot by a marine in drug interdiction efforts in order to paint a gruesome, and frightening picture of “bloodshed on our borders.” They paint our National Guard to look like a bunch of murderers with no self control. I know that in my military career I wasn’t only taught to kill, but also to protect and save lives, obey my orders, and excellent discipline. The ACLU has obviously been smoking too much “Mexican Redhair” at the border. They have absolutely no clue about the integrity and honor of our military, much less respect.
Securing the border is a national security issue, and if it takes the military to fix the problem then so be it. The ACLU don’t give a damn about our national security, as they have illustrated on countless occassions. They have fought every effort the government has attempted to protect America. They are so out of touch and in the fringe on this issue, that they actually advocate completely open borders.
Sadly, it is open border lobby organizations like the ACLU that Bush seems to be listening to. It is telling that the ACLU only found two things about Bush’s plan that they disagreed with. The whole “path to legalization”, is just a page from their book. Keep letting your voices be heard on this important national security issue. There are some people who are listening. Tom Tancredo in 08!
And we can see the reaction, perhaps the ACLU will go to bat for these guys.

I believe sending the National Guard to the border is just more political pandering. Their activities will probably be so curtailed that they may aid invaders in entering our country instead of preventing them. I will just wait and see but I am highly doubtful.
Sending the Guard to the border is a nice step, but he could have made it a meaningful step by employing the Insurrection Act and empowering the Guard to arrest and detain illegals until the Border Patrol and/or ICE could take charge of the illegals in detention.
Out military is experienced in handling capture of surrendering troops on the battlefield. They are searched, secured, and transported to a field detention facility where they receive a medical exam, food, and water. It is usually a short detention until rear area forces arrive to transport them to a more perminant facility for housing until the end of the conflict.
If our guys can do that on the battlefield with men who have been trying to kill them, don’t you think that they should be able to handle an illegal alien who is more likely than not to be unarmed?
The deployment in my opinion doesn’t go far enough.
As far as the employment authorization card, I believe that with today’s technology and information systems, the cards can be encoded with biometric information that could be checked electronically via computer to varify with the issuing authority that the person standing in the office seeking a job is the person that the card was issued to. That being said, I don’t see how that could be forged.
Wow, there was a surprise!
This action was only slightly less probable than the sun coming up this morning, or Howard Dean saying something stupid.
I also believe that the only way to purge our nation of illegal aliens is to eliminate their reason for coming here to begin with. How? By making the fine for being caught employing 1 illegal high enough to put Microsoft of Walmart into bankruptcy. Get caught with 2, the fine should be enough to bankrupt Saudi Arabia. Do you think the construction contractor would risk employing an illegal day laborer under threat of those kind of fines?
