Kerry Calls For Filibuster on Alito
Posted on January 26, 2006
John Kerry doesn’t think we have dragged Alito through the mud enough yet. Apparantly he thinks this needs to be dragged out as much as possible, and hasn’t had enough drama yet. Today, he is officially calling for a filibuster.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Sen. John Kerry has decided to support a filibuster to block the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, CNN’s Congressional Correspondent Ed Henry reported Thursday.
Kerry, in Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum, was marshaling support in phone calls during the day, Henry said.
He announced his decision Wednesday to a group of Democratic senators, urging they join him, Henry said. Kerry also has the support of his fellow Massachusetts senator, Democrat Edward Kennedy.
Some senior Democrats said they are worried that the move could backfire.
Republicans need 60 votes to overturn a filibuster.
This will definitely backfire on the dems. This absolutely makes the democrats look bad, even more so on the sore loser making as big of a show out of things as he can in hopes of gaining support for another shot at the presidency. This man has been dragged through the democrat’s drama enough. Its time for an up or down vote now! Many redstate democrats have already demonstrated that they think Alito is deserving not only of a vote, but a yes vote. Obviously Kerry didn’t like the way the things were headed, and decided to be the big dog to crash the party. It is possible that the nuclear option may just have to be invoked after all. Kerry once again proves he is an idiot.
Others: The Political Teen here and here.
Michelle Malkin says there are enough votes to stop the filibuster. Plus, Sen. Robert Byrd has joined Dems Tim Johnson and Ben Nelson in throwing his support to Alito. Polipundit counts the five dems that say they will vote yes. Looks like that filibuster stuff will be short lived for sure. With 55 Republicans, and these 5 dems, that is the 60 votes needed to break the filibuster.
In all seriousness, a filibuster of Alito led by John Kerry would be an incredible show. Could you imagine the guy who couldn’t even excite a crowd of “supporters” during the 2004 campaign try to filibuster the nominee of his former presidential opponent, who now has bipartisan support? It would be a disaster for Kerry and his party. However, enough Democrats have come out either in support of Alito’s confirmation or against a filibuster that we have the votes for cloture.

So much for the agreement to not filibuster judicial nominees….or was that agreement only good for so long?
I say use the nuclear option….this will, like everything else the dems have tried lately, (remember Murtha’s bag’o'crud he flung around?), backfire on them, with after effects that are, to those on the right, entertaining, and those one the left, devastating.
Every single day the dems do yet one more thing to aid in their decline from power…..it is getting to the point that resuscitation may be an impossibility, which in the grand scheme of things would actually be bad, as we need two parties, but better to have one party that will defend us, than two parties and have one of them actually be an enemy to our safety and freedom…buh-bye-dhimmicrats!!!!
At least the democrats gave “Scalito” a full hearing. Frist got up and spoke about an up or down vote and a fair process. What happened to Miers’ up or down vote and fair process? You Conservatives beat her to death before she even got a fair trial.
I think the filibuster idea is outstanding! You all should be glad that there is a Senator willing to stand up for checks & balances and civil rights. Too bad almost all Republican Senators have betrayed the American people in casting their partyline vote. Really shows who the independent thinkers are–even a couple Dems like Byrd fell back on their bigotted roots.
Welcome to the fillibuster. Why not, the Repubs in Congress are going to do the same thing to the Presidents Stem Cell bill.
See you on the other side!

Every single day the dems do yet one more thing to aid in their decline from power…
Yeah, and every single day, the Republicans violate the US Constitution and/or do something illegal to land themselves in jail. Keep up the good work Rs.
Just like Druggy Limbaugh, you too will one day be begging the ACLU to defend your sorry carcases.

Umm…genie?
Who violated what today? Who got sent to jail when?
As I said…the left is going down, down, down…..but, maybe like the Titanic, you guys can ask billyjojimbob clinton to play his sax for ya’ as the dems power sinks forever from sight.
Genie I want to thank you and those like you for continuing to hold the handle down on the political toilet to continue flusing the dems.
You said: “You Conservatives beat her to death before she even got a fair trial.”
It’s called standards. I don’t expect you to fully understand but this was a perfect example of the right is NOT in lockstep with the President and if he does something we don’t approve of we will let him know. His promise was to put up some one like Alito and he didn’t do it. Are you saying we shouldn’t question that? Or was she more in line with what YOU wanted than what WE wanted? Beyond that, you are missing a HUGE difference here in that Republican senators were not the ones going after Meiers. The people who put them in office did. That would be us. Don’t you people always tell us that dissent is patriotic? I know it’s tough for you guys to disagree with meatheads you put into office but we try to hold ours to their word. Everything else you said is talking points and I encourage you to keep up the good work.
If you lean too far to the left, you will probably lose your balance and fall flat on your face. This is what is actually happening to the liberals.
Genie, folk like you are why the conservatives are in power. Your steadfast refusal to acknowledge the truth (let alone accept it) forces many moderate Democratic political candidates from the center leftward, thus preventing moderate voters from supporting candidates they perceive as too darned liberal. Keep up the good work. You are the best thing that ever happened to the Republican Party.
Once again John Kerry proves how politically tone deaf he is.
John Kerry is the gift that keeps giving - to the GOP!
THanks Little Johnny!
Genie: You can now point out in the Constitution what rights the Republicans have trampled on.
“Just like Druggy Limbaugh,”
From someone who supports the same party that wants drugs legal? Btw, Rush admitted to his problem BEFORE committing perjury, unlike certain Dem Presidents we can name.
“or do something illegal to land themselves in jail.”
Do you really want to go there? I’d think long and hard about that.
America has had it with libs. Deal with it.
Calling for a filibuster was a poor political move on Kerry’s part if he has any desires to run in ‘08. It’ about time we get this qualified nominee confirmed and on the bench. This has dragged on for long enough!!!
I want to reflect Senator Reid’s sentiments - “let’s hope this doesn’t lead to more talking.” They’ve had time to consider the nominee and now it’s time to do their job - “advise and consent” on the nominee. Vote on Judge Alito’s qualifications and give Americans an answer - a filibuster will not accomplish anything other than further party divides.
Bring it on John. Let’s go to the mat. Kerry wants to filibuster the Alito vote. I say, bring it on. On television. The whole thing. First and formsot it will accomplish what the Democrats love, wasting more of our tax dollars.
More importantly, rather most importantly, it will let the whole country see how mean spirited and petty the Democrats are. It will show us all how truely dangerous John Kerry and his ilk are. It will give a major boost to the Repulicans.
Let’s have the bread and circus. Let the clowns have their day.
Kerry was touring India and Pakistan during the nomination hearings. Now he is in Davos, probably with his main financier, George Soros, the economic terrorist. He is waging a battle from overseas.
If he thought it was so important, he would be here. But being the coward that he truely is, he is overseas, spewing out statements and getting his marching orders from the mad billionaire.
If he really believes that the Alito filibuster and defeat is so vital to the country, he better take a Swift Boat back here and DO HIS JOB, the one we are paying him for.
We laid the concept of John Kerry as a person of critical influence to rest in 2004. His intentions appeared to be sincere but the delivery, in large part due to his personality, was fatally flawed. John Kerry in the role of a standard-bearing Democratic strategist is laudible but laughable. I totally agree with the Bushies that when Dems attack, it is usually the present Dem incarnation that is injured. The present Democratic “leadership” seems more like an aggregate of charicatures than real leaders and the Republican media/tricksters need to do very little to assist this peception. As politically incorrect as it may seem, any viable political force in US at this time (except in the biggest cities) needs to recognize that you win when you assume that the electorate is laughably gullible and eventually accepts as gospel anything that is repeated incessantly in phrases rather than complete sentences. We love the aura of infallibility in our leaders. We love a stage presence–my parents used to call this “play acting.” We despise anyone who contradicts our firmly-held beliefs and are comfortable in being able to brag that we can kick anyone’s ass at any time. We cower when we hear that if we support ABB (anyone/anything but Bush) our demise may be imminent. And when we hear stuff like that 9/11 Commision report (way too long and with small print), no WMD, FEMA/Katrina, something called a budget deficit, Scooterville Libby, Jack Abramoff, all that energy company brouhaha, Joseph Wilson/Valerie Plame and a booming economy for some–well, we’ll get ugly angry because this is just playing politics, by God. Blogs and print media are entertaining but are relatively ineffective in moving the masses, and Karl and the boys have played that fiddle expertly for years. Lastly, terror comes in many forms. That recent extemporaneous press conference by Mr. Bush has me aquiver. Sir, with all due respect, I don’t think that your constant admonition that we “need to understand” is really needed now. You are in trouble precisely because we as nation are understanding more every day. I thought we had elected Rocky Balboa, but what I saw more resembled Ozzie Osbourne. That’s sheer terror!
