Alito To Receive Committee Vote Today
Posted on January 24, 2006
Update: Committee Confirms him, and the ACLU are pissed off.
If all goes well, Judge Alito will be voted to the full Senate today.
Half of the committee’s eight Democrats _ Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, Dick Durbin of Illinois and Dianne Feinstein of California _ have announced their opposition to his nomination. Many expect the other four _ Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, Joseph Biden of Delaware and Charles Schumer of New York _ to join them.
After the committee votes, Alito’s nomination goes to the full Senate for a final vote as early as this week. Republicans want Alito on the Supreme Court before Bush gives his State of the Union address on Jan. 31.
Assuming that the democrats will behave rationally, which is of course a gamble at best, the vote will go to the full Senate. If cloture, which requires 60 votes is denied, then you have a Democrat filibuster. While there is no good reason this should happen, I will not rely on democrats to use reason. Will it be quick and painless, or will we see some drama? Your guess is as good as mine.
Most Americans think a filibuster is uncalled for and that Alito should sit on the Court, as evidenced in a recent poll by CNN.
****UPDATE****
Alito approved by Judiciary Committee along party lines. All 8 Communists, I mean Democrats, vote to reject the nominee while all 10 Republicans vote to approve. The nomination now goes on the the full Senate for consideration. A vote could happen as soon as Friday. But I wouldn’t make book on it.

The news this morning stated he would be voted to the full Senate and that likely means he will confirmed. I commend the Senators in the nominating committee who put Judge Alito through. This is the type of Justice we need - he is extremely qualified, as evidenced by his ABA rating and how he handled the unfair questioning in the committee hearings. I don’t believe, as many Democrats will say, that he is so far to the right that he will “tip over” the court. He has proven he will follow the law of the Constitution, not his own personal opinions.
It is time for the nation to come together somehow and get liquor breath Kennedy out of office before the voters of the Peoples Republic of MA ruins our country.
Judge Sam Alito maintained a pose of dignity and honor throughout the hearings. The Dems did their best to try and “bork” him into a tirade, yet failed. The results were in plain view for all reasonable Americans to see. Part of me almost wishes that the Michael Moore-wing of the Party gets it wish and the Senate Democrats try a filibuster. I believe that would drive a final nail to their chances in the 2006 elections.
Getting things done in this country, especially vital things, is on par with mating elephants. The worse part is that it costs so much of our tax dollars to do this.
We should be outraged. But no, like the sheeple we are, we just keep paying. Thanks to the Democrats, more of our tax dollars were wasted on hearings for the sole purpose of getting their mugs on TV.
Stop wasting OUR money. Confirm this guy and put him on the court this week.
I don’t think there are any surprises today regarding the vote coming out of the Judiciary Committee. It seems quite clear that Judge Alito–the most qualified nominee in over 70 years–will be confirmed to the Supreme Court. It’s just a shame that more of our Senators can’t see through the muddy partisan waters to confirm Judge Alito.
Judge Alito, Like Judge Roberts, is highly qualified. It was almost comical to see how much brighter, better prepared, and more reasonable the Judges were than the radical left Democrats on the Judicary Committee. A few RINOs on the Committee also need a swift kick, but that’s for another time. Bravo to President Bush for fine nominees.
There definitely should be no surprise that the vote was straight down party lines. In a few days, Judge Alito will be confirmed by the entire Senate, and SCOTUS will benefit from his wisdom and knowledge of the law for years to come, while those voting no on the committee vote will be long forgotten.
This partisan vote is not surprising at all. He was not voted against because he was unqualified. Senate Dems voted against him because of purely political reasons. I would not expect the all of the Senate Dems to vote against him. I think Alito will get a similar level of support as Roberts received. As such a highly qualified nominee, I cannot see how many Senators could vote against him.
I hope you are right, Andrew. I hope Alito does receive the same amount of support as Roberts on the Senate floor. If he doesn’t, then we know it is for partisan reasons since Alito is the MOST QUALIFIED nominee in over 70 years. I hope the moderate Dem Senators who have yet to decide on a vote, will vote based upon what his/her constituency wants and not be persuaded by partisan politics. The public clearly supports the nomination of Judge Sam Alito!
Don’t worry Louise. It seems to me that the full Senate will do the right thing and confirm. There are still a few RINO’s out there who will fold eventually as well (although I resent them taking this long). The debate has been excellent form McCain, Cornyn, even Specter. Confirm Alito.
There has been some great debate in the Senate minus the partisan jabs from the Democrats. The public supports Alito, the majority of the Senate supports Alito, the President supports Alito. He should be confirmed without any more delay.
