The Alito Smearings
Posted on January 13, 2006
The democrats pulled out every dirty trick in their bag to damage the confirmation of Judge Alito, yet in the end the only damage they did was to their own party.
They tried to smear him as a racist and a bigot, but as one blogger puts it, the only smearing that stuck in people’s mind was of his wife’s mascara.
Rightwing Nuthouse says it well:
For three days, Democratic Senators flailed about wildly looking for all the world like blindfolded children trying to smack a pinata, so elusive and more intelligent was their putative quarry. In the end, they only managed to hit themselves on the noggin while the nominee walked away laughing after getting all the candy.
It is pretty much in the bag, with the democrats throwing in the towel. Alito is expected to get few democrat votes, but he should have smooth sailing to get confirmed.
Regardless, the dems want to delay the inevitable.

Lets turn to rightwing nutjob to see how the democrats fared.
The Democrats may have thrown in the towel alright, but I would be careful enough to pick it up with rubber gloves and a mask until I could get it checked for Sarin contamination. My Eleventh Commandment is, never trust anyone who believes truth is relative.
Do not be fulled. Be careful. Be very careful. Do not be lulled into the fact that the Democrats and their radical fundamentalist liberal elitist allies think they have lost anything. They will be on the attack as soon as Alito is on the bench.
Worse, they have demonstated the new rules for holding hearings. The next appointees will face tougher and more indecent challenges. Remember the Bolton confirmation hearings.
They are practicing a new form of politics. It is not the politics of meaning, identity politics, or group politics. It is the politics of destruction.
They are on a downward spiral of destroying anyone who does not march in goose step with their utopian dreams.
Well…I would not go as far as saying the Democrats have “thrown in the towel.” As of today, the vote has been delayed because of the Democrats. They won’t throw in the towel until they’ve had a chance to “smear” Alito on the Senate floor.
They may not have thrown in the towel, but they are starting to crack. Sen Nelson has announced his support for Judge Alito. Let’s see if any others follow his lead.
Let’s hope other democrats besides Senator Nelson realize that Judge Alito is an extremely qualified candidate and support him like many of them did Judge Roberts.
I don’t think the Dems have necessarily thrown in the towel quite yet. There still may be a filibuster on the horizon. However, when the Washington Post comes out and endorses Alito, how can he not get the same support as Roberts did?
Judge Alito deserves the same support Roberts received, but as more democrats pledge to vote against Judge Alito it looks like towing the party line will trump Alito’s exemplory intellect, record, and understanding of the law.
