Alito’s Wife Leaves Hearing In Tears
Posted on January 11, 2006

It got ugly today at the hearings! At one point, Senator Arlen Specter slapped down Senator Kennedy.
The excitement of the day came when Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he wants the committee vote on issuing a subpoena to the Library of Congress for papers written by the founder of the Conservative Alumni of Princeton, William Rusher, a former publisher of the National Review. Rusher is said to have written racist and elitist stories for the CAP magazine, called Prospect.
Alito claims he does not recall his involvement in the CAP, a conservative group formed in 1972 to, in part, challenge Princeton University’s decision to admit women and minorities and protest the school’s treatment of the ROTC program. He also said he “deplores” the Prospect articles that exude racist or elitest sentiment.
“I have to say, Judge Alito’s explanations about his membership in this seemingly radical group … are troubling and I don’t think they add up,” said Kennedy, D-Mass., who said he sent a letter to Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., on the topic but Specter said he never got it.
Kennedy insisted the chairman did receive the letter and that’s when the fireworks started.
“You are not in a position to say what I received,” Specter fired back. “I take umbrage at you telling me what I received.”
“I am in a position to know what I sent … if you’re going to rule it out of order, I want to have a vote on that in the committee” about going into executive session, Kennedy responded.
Specter said since this is the first he’s heard about any subpoena, he will consider it in “due course.” Kennedy threatened to call for votes on the subpoena.
“Senator Kennedy, I’m not concerned about your threat to have votes again and again and again,” Specter said. “I’m the chairman of this committee … I will not have you run this committee and decide when we’re going to go into executive session.”Fox News
Later, Senator Lindsay Graham apologized to the Judge’s family for the behavior of his fellow committee members during the course of the last three days.
Sen. Graham said: “Judge Alito, I am sorry that you’ve had to go through this. I am sorry that your family has had to sit here and listen to this.”
“Are you really a closet bigot?” Graham asked Alito. The nominee said no, and Graham said, “No sir, you‘re not.”
After enduring accusation after accusation of her husband being a racist, bigot, and woman hater, Alito’s wife broke down in tears after hearing the apology. It is quite pitiful the tactics the democrats stoop to in order to smear this man. Why? They want a liberal, activist court! Its as simple as that folks! They are out of power and falling off the left cliff in the other branches. The Judicial branch is their last stronghold, and you better believe they won’t let go of it without a fight. They could care less how dirty the fight has to get, and how low they have to go to retain their power. The irony is that these kind of actions only hurt them. The public is not stupid like they believe we are.
Senator Hatch suggested that she was upset with the questioning from Democrats. “She‘s sick and tired of the mistreatment of her husband,” Hatch said. He also said that she was suffering from a migraine headache.
They are trying to paint this man as a bigot, and they have nothing to back them up on it. They should be ashamed of themselves, but it seems they have no shame. They too often forget in their political power hunger, that people have feelings. Yes, the party of compassion indeed. They are simply bullying this man, and playing the smear job as best they know how, yet in the end, they are only smearing themselves.

Are you now or were you ever a member of the Concerned Alumni of Princeton? Are you now or were you ever a reader or subscriber of that group’s magazine, “Prospect?”
After watching today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearings into Judge Samuel Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court, you can almost hear the ghost of the infamous Sen. Joe McCarthy pursing communists during the Red Scare paranoia of the 1950s.
McCarthy’s anti-communist hunts destroyed careers, friendship and lives. Those who had the courage to oppose him are celebrated even today.
“I have here in my hand a list of the names of …,” the demagogic McCarthy frequently declared, proclaiming that he had uncovered commies in the Army, State Department and in the shadowy niches and crannies of Washington.
For the majority of Americans who weren’t around for those horrible times, you can’t fully appreciate his loathsome behavior. Simply reading “suspect” materials or having them in your home was sufficient reason to be investigated. Any connection, however slight, with the “wrong” people or groups was enough to put you on someone’s blacklist.
I was around for the Army-McCarthy hearings, which was the senator’s vehicle for ruining lives under cover of the law. In honesty, I cannot recall since then any performance that has come anywhere close to this outrage—until witnessing the nauseating behavior today of Sen. Ted Kennedy and his Democratic colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Not since the 1950s, have I witnessed such a vile use of “guilt by association” for political advantage.
In the words of Joseph Welch, the Army’s counsel, after McCarthy had destroyed his latest victim: “Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator.”
McCarthy tried to interrupt, determined to continue on his destructive path: “Let’s, let’s…”
Welch, in words that entered political history cut him off: “You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”
No, Kennedy and his crew don’t.
“Senator Arlen Specter slapped down Senator Kennedy.”
Probably the two biggest jackholes in all of Congress, if not the nation. Kennedy is permanently addled and Specter is the guy who helped sneak in that new law about “annoying” people anonymously on the Internet, which you may have heard about.
Alito, unless he turns out to have a think for little boys or something, will be confirmed. He’s not as far to the right as Bork (who is?) and his record is unimpeachable. There’s no point in people on either side torturing themselves by watching the fur fly — that part’s a given.
Guess what Where’s my Haldo? I AGREE completely with you. Well for the most part. I defintely put Specter up there as one of the biggest jackholes, right with Kennedy, but I think there are plenty more jackholes that would take second place to Kennedy. However, Specter is up there. Here in PA, I’m proud to say, I did not vote for him.
And, on top of all this, Chuck Schumer got on TV during the break and said he thought the Democrats did well with their questions. He didn’t see a thing they did wrong. Right - WRONG!
If some of these Democrats had to sit under some of their own ‘medicine’, they’d be hollering foul play! But, we have Judge Alito sitting there, taking it all in with humility. This man is to be commended for the control he showed during this absurd indignity thrown at him by a bunch of liberal bigots!
“Probably the two biggest jackholes in all of Congress.”
I’ll give you ten points for that. 1 for being right and two for creative use of the English language. I’m from PA, and Spectre pissed me off terribly numerous times. I can’t believe Santorum and the President supported this guy. But Ted Kennedy takes the cake when it comes to world class turds. If anyone should be placed under oath and railed for 24 hours its him. Could you imagine what skeletons we could pull out of his closet?

More disgraceful than Clarence Thomas and Bork…I was embarassed for the Alito’s today.
Just think what kind of fight we’d be in store for if Justice Stevens were to kick the bucket. Stevens is so old he and Thomas Payne were in rompers together.
I can’t figure out how this trackback stuff works…any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
“Senator Lindsey Graham (D-SC) slammed the arrogance and patronization that has been alive and well at Judge Samuel Alito’s confirmaton hearings”.
For the record: Lindsey is a Republican, and a good one at that.
Typical liberals.
Claim to be “champions” of women and little people, but only use that as a cloak to bully and intimidate. Shame on them.
F’ing Cowards.
Re: Dennis Byrne
Kennedy learned his tactics from his brothers, who worked for Joe McCarthy. He learned his lessons well.
People like you all are ruining this country.
Wake up and smell the roses. Get your heads out of that bible and use the brains you were given.
God Bless Sen Edward Kennedy and his life long work for our nation, pathetic as it may be under the corrupt and inept adminstration of a bumbling idiot like bush and a monster and a liar like cheney..
I believe Sen. Kennedy’s actions today best illustrate the hypocracy. He lashes out at Judge Alito regarding an organization he was a part of in college, yet TK himself still belongs to an all male organization. I wish all Senators were put through the same scrutiny that SCOTUS justices go through…
