No Holiday Vacation For Tampa Schools?

Posted on November 8, 2005

TAMPA - — School Superintendent MaryEllen Elia wants Yom Kippur, Good Friday and the Monday after Easter reinstated as holidays in the academic calendar.

She plans to make that recommendation to school board members at Tuesday’s meeting.

“We don’t have time for anger, vindictiveness or political maneuvering,” Elia said of the hundreds of e-mail messages and phone calls the district has received on the matter.

“What have schoolchildren learned from the community’s adults so far on this issue?” Elia said. “They’ve seen far too much grandstanding, ignorance, bigotry and anger.”

Elia’s announcement came more than a week after the school board agreed to eliminate the three days from its 2006-07 calendar. Students will be allowed to be absent for religious holidays, however, without penalty.

The board’s decision was prompted by Muslims asking for a school holiday for Eid Al-Fitr.

You think I’m gonna blame the Muslims? You’d guess wrong. This was a complete overreaction by the school. And the politically correct crap I just heard on Fox News speaks volumes of the state of our country. They said they would keep Christmas just because it could be referred to as Winter Holiday. What a load of PC Crap.

All the school board had to do was give 1 day off to muslim students. 1 day to celebrate a month long holiday. To be honest, I don’t think that was too much to ask.

I heard some talk about a lemon test. They could keep Christmas because so many would skip school anyway that it would warrant giving time off, where the Muslims would not create that same secular reasoning. Blah, blah, blah. Secularizing America! No one cares about roots, only change. You leave your uproot the tree and the branches will not reach, nor produce fruit for the future. There is a line that should be walked, and its being crossed.
