Democracy Be Damned; The ACLU Will Have No Crosses
Posted on November 6, 2005
In yet another diplay of disdain for a government for the people, and by the people, the ACLU state that they know whats better.
REDLANDS – Voters decide next week if the “City of Churches” should restore the cross to the Redlands seal. When the American Civil Liberties Union threatened a costly lawsuit last year if the cross wasn’t eliminated, officials decided the cross must be erased from the city logo. Many residents were outraged and voters will now decide Tuesday if the religious symbol will return.
If Measure Q wins, the ACLU will likely go to court.
“This is the first time this has happened, to my knowledge,” said ACLU attorney Peter Eliasberg, who tracks crosses on seals statewide. He said it is “highly likely” a lawsuit would be filed against the city if it reinstates the cross.
Seriously, this is the guy? Peter Eliasberg is the Nationwide cross tracker? I mean for real? The ACLU really has one of those?
“The cross is clearly unconstitutional,” Eliasberg said. “It sends a message of favor for one religion over others.”
Last year, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to take a cross off the county’s seal under threat of a lawsuit by the ACLU.
Scott Siegel, who led the drive to put Measure Q on Tuesday’s ballot, resents that the ACLU forced the city into removing the cross from the city seal.
“What happens in this type of situation is that the ACLU threatens to sue, then the city capitulates on a cost basis, and the case is never decided on its legal merits,” he said. “The ACLU is telling us that it’s a foregone conclusion that we’re going to lose if a suit is filed. That’s just a ridiculous statement.”
Ridiculous indeed, but thats the ACLU for you. What the people want has no sway with this organization. Why would it? It might be suprising if they were founded on democracy instead of Communism. It is good to see this town has decided not to cower before the ACLU’s threatening methods to further its secular cleansing of America. Now, if I could only find hope in our judicial system.
Thank you, Michelle Malkin for the link. Michelle provides some more background information on this.
Angry in the Great White North has found more crosses for the ACLU to eliminate.

The Los Angeles thing is what kills me the most.
What the hell do these idiots think “Los Angeles” means? It ain’t a reference to “Lost Anglos” (although there are lots of those there!).
John - not much time - gotta run, but could this be a “trojan cross” for the aclu? People “voting” for the cross will be seen as “imposing/instituting”..this could get smelly via SCOTUS….couldn’t it?
No telling how SCOTUS would interpret something like this, but the true imposing is coming from the ACLU.
Jay, the ACLU has more than just a nationwide “cross-tracker.” They have a whole bevy of lawyers that watch conflics in each state, picking the ones that the ACLU feels they need to butt in on.
Likely, they’ll use a very similar argument to the one they used against the Nebraska Same Sex Marriage Amendment: the democratic voting system does not give the minority viewpoint a chance to win.
You think I kid.
No, I know you don’t kid. I knew they tracked this kind of stuff, but I’d never seen it in a publication.
The ACLU seeks to undermine the very foundation of our nation.
One must ask what is the long-term agenda, for surely this persistent tactical approach cannot be without one?
Divide and conquer. By robbing a country of faith and national pride, what remains is vulnerable and weak.
See Paris burning.

Huh? You write as if a vote should overtake the Constituion. *IF* the display is unconstituional, then democracy cannot and should not overcome that fact. I also wonder why it’s so critical for some people to erect a cross in public areas. Why is it so compelling for them to want to have it? They act as if it’s a religion or something.
Would a “crescent of embrace” be acceptable on a city seal?

ACLU has in the past won cases in Federal Court regarding the placement of religious symbols on government property. It’s that “Constitutional” thing with the amendments and all. However, most particular items would go unchallenged by the ACLU unless there is a specific complaint.
The ACLU does swing both ways.
Recent ACLU involvement in religious liberty cases include:

January 18, 2002: ACLU defends Christian church’s right to run “anti-Santa” ads in Boston subways.
The ACLU should sue Turkey for the Cresent and star. They stole it from the city and realm of Constantinople, and that symbol, going back to pagan reverence for Diana/Artemis and the star for Virgin Mary should be returned to Christians.
I notice that several of their lawsuits were started by the ACLJ, they only joined in because they knew the ACLJ would win, and they thought they could get some positive publicity that they do not deserve. I see that you listed that they are against intelligent design and that is definitely against christianity.
Funny. It’s as if Ghost Dansing never posted his list of cases where the ACLU took the side of the relgious. Hey Dansing, you’re getting in the way of ACLU opponents’ dogma. Stick with the program.
This has gotten so crazy. I am the furthest thing in the world from a
Christian and yet find the ACLU to be completely out of line.
I saw a good title assigned to this individual over at The Scriptorium.
They called him the “Cross Contention Coordinator” or CCC for short.
“Cross Contention Coordinator” or CCC for short.”
How appropriate!
(Mat 5:29) And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
(Mat 5:30) And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
The “Right” is an offense to God. You will be plucked out, cut off and cast back into Hell from whence you came!
