How The ACLU Censors Religious Expression

Posted on September 23, 2005

The ACLU claims to be the great defender of liberty, but the truth is that their definition of liberty is limited to what alligns within their agenda. As a matter of fact, the ACLU is the foremost religious censor in America. Despite the fact that this nation was founded upon the ideals of religious freedom, the ACLU has succeeded in manipulating the very founding principles through the corrupted judicial branch to repress the religious expression of America, and continues to work daily at erasing our National religious heritage from the pages of history.

Alan Sears gives a great list of the ACLU’s religious censorship practices in his latest column at Worldnet Daily.

In the late 1960s, plaques bearing non-sectarian passages from Psalms were privately donated and installed at Grand Canyon National Park. (Even if you haven’t heard of this story, you can probably guess where this is heading.) An ACLU paralegal “discovered” the three-decades-old plaques and e-mailed the National Park Service to demand an explanation. This simple correspondence so rattled the Park Service that they removed the plaques without a legal fight.

In effect, one e-mail from a leftist legal group caused a governmental agency to restrict the free exercise of religion. Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund assured the Park Service that the plaques did not violate the Constitution. To the contrary, the plaques are a form of expression that the Constitution guarantees. Thankfully, the Park Service allowed the plaques back in – at least for the time being.

In another alarming example, the ACLU joined a suit against Catholic Charities, demanding that the organization provide contraception coverage in any group prescription-drug program offered to its employees. Since the teachings of the Catholic Church prohibit the use of such contraceptives, the ACLU was demanding that the state force the group to violate the tenets of its founding faith.

Sadly, the Supreme Court of California agreed with the ACLU’s reasoning that since Catholic Charities employs and ministers to non-Catholics, it was not allowed to faithfully follow Catholic doctrine. Another ACLU body blow designed to subvert religious freedom.

Yeshiva University, a conservative Jewish institution, did not allow two lesbians to live in married student housing since it was forbidden by their faith’s teachings. The ACLU and other activist groups sued the private institution, bringing it all the way to the New York Court of Appeals.

Attorney Harvey Blitz, who supported Yeshiva in the case, rightfully stated that accommodating same-sex couples in this manner would amount to a “promotion of the gay and lesbian lifestyle,” which is “inconsistent with Orthodox Jewish principles.”

Despite the obvious meaning of the First Amendment, the court sided with the ACLU and against traditional religious beliefs. Yeshiva was forced to act contrary to its religious beliefs and house same-sex couples as if they were married.

This dramatic erosion of religious liberty is the result of the ACLU’s deliberate, incremental strategy. The group often starts its attacks against cash-strapped organizations or legally unsophisticated governmental agencies. Many times, a forceful letter from a big-firm ACLU lawyer is enough to cause an administrator to restrict the public expression of religion.read the whole thing

Alan hit the nail on the head in this article. Under the disguise of red, white, and blue garb garb the ACLU has waged war on religion, specifically Christianity. They threaten small schools, and communities over nativity scenes at Christmas, voluntary prayer in schools, and declared an all out war against the Boyscouts; all the while under the name of liberty. It’s disgusting, and it’s time for people to get angry and stand up.

Organizations are out there fighting them in the Courts everyday such as ADF, and the ACLJ; worthy groups we should all be donating to. But its time for the everyday people to stand up to this bully and say enough is enough. The ACLU manipulates and twists the Constitution, and has disdain for the very ideals of democracy, using the most undemocratic branch of our government to override the will of the people. It’s time for the people to put the ACLU in its place.

Every time the ACLU wins a case against the ten commandments, Bibles and prayer in school, etc., etc., etc….you pay them. Stand with us against the ACLU’s abusive tactics to censor religious expression.

Great post. The place for the ACLU is the dumpster.

it’d be great if you could provide some actual news (AP) accounts of these incidents. i searched for the records of the grand canyon incident but could only find other fundamentalist or right-wing sites echoing the same information you report here.

Well Mike, The AP has gotten a federal judge to place restricitons on who can use their material. We cannot reprint their information like you ask. Why? Because this site runs paid ads and asks for donations for a third party.

There has to be some level of leg work done by the curious.

  4. Gribbit on September 23rd, 2005 11:43 am

And one other thing, if you notice, that information that you are referring to was written by an outside party, Alan Sears. Want to know where he got it, write the ADF.

  5. Jay on September 23rd, 2005 11:47 am

The info is legit, but I have a feeling I could cater to you till my face turned blue, and you wouldn’t be convinced otherwise of your already made up mind.

And to be honest, if you had half a brain and could read, in the thread it is explained that the ADF offered advice and services to the the National Park Service prior to their returning the plaques to the park. Alan Sears is the Chief at the ADF. He is the source of the info and he is the writer of the quoted text in the tread.

    Grow a brain.

Isn’t it interesting that people who hate the ACLU seem to think that the only Americans entitled to Civil Liberties are the straight white male Christian Americans?

  8. Gribbit on September 23rd, 2005 1:36 pm

Norah, that is the most ignorant statement of the day. Actually it is quite the opposite. Liberals think that only people with their misguided opinions have a right to speak.

And just so you know, comment without a link again, and it gets deleted.

  9. tee bee on September 23rd, 2005 1:37 pm

Norah, I’m not white or male, and I don’t see how your comment addresses the statment that the ACLU has waged war on religion and Christianity.

I don’t find it interesting that humanists are okay with the ACLU impeaching history and working under the guise of civil liberties to limit liberties.

  10. Gribbit on September 23rd, 2005 1:39 pm

    Well stated TEE BEE.

Jay, I think we should have a new contest. One that we don’t have to pay out anything. Moronic Comment of the day. You and I will judge. Today I nominate Norah.

  11. Ogre on September 23rd, 2005 2:38 pm

Norah, why are you so racist? Why do you only see people by their skin color? Most people who oppose the ACLU oppose the ACTIONS of the ACLU, not the color of skin of the people, like you seem to.

jeez, guys, no need to get your panties in a wad. just looking for a little context. i did a google search of this story (”grand canyon”+aclu) and the first five pages of results were literally all right-wing or conservative christian web-sites, hence the choice of the word “echoing.”

here’s a technique i’ve learned through the years: when you don’t insult people, they listen to what you have to say.

and, “gribbit”, have you ever heard the expression, “empty barrels make the most noise”? think about it, son.

  13. Gribbit on September 23rd, 2005 6:09 pm

You know what Mike… My panties aren’t in a wad. But your ignorance is starting to piss me off.

Keep in mind, who you are angering with your abundance of ignorance. All you had to do is read the friggin thread. And you didn’t. You read what you wanted. And commented blindly. You are a moron.

Jay, I change my vote. Mike can have Moronic comment of the day

  14. Gribbit on September 23rd, 2005 6:09 pm

Oh, Get your own forum to spout. No link no voice. Last warning.

  15. mike reiger on September 23rd, 2005 6:27 pm

i assume “gribbit” is a man’s name–and you say your panties aren’t in wad.

what are you doing wearing panties in the first place? (oldest trick in the book, you fell for it hook, line and sinker. i’m telling you, pay attention and you might learn something.)

also, i spent some time trying to find some context for the story, and found an echo chamber. that’s why i asked for a link–i can’t spend all day on the internet ;)

  16. Jay on September 23rd, 2005 6:34 pm

I don’t understand what the problem is..since you can only find this reported on several right leaning sources, you don’t believe it happened? Is that what you are trying to imply? Or you are looking for the version that goes along with the way you already think?

Here is a legit source originally reported from the AP. It’s old news, so you will have a hard time finding anything other than opinion columns.

  17. Jay on September 23rd, 2005 6:34 pm

    Perhaps try Arizona ACLU too.
