ACLU Wants To Let The Genie Out Of The Bottle
Posted on September 17, 2005
In its typical scare tactic way, the ACLU is fighting the Patriot Act over a librarian’s name to be released over activities the FBI has found worthy of investigating. The ACLU is trying to take the FBI’s efforts to protect Americans from terrorists and turn it into a terror itself. They want you to feel like the FBI knows when you check out a book from the local library.
If a Connecticut librarian’s name is let out of the bag, terrorists might use that and other information to piece together how the FBI is trying to thwart their activity.
That’s the “mosaic theory” behind the U.S. Department of Justice’s effort to keep the librarian muzzled, as outlined in a motion filed Friday with the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. The federal agency filed an emergency motion for an expedited appeal seeking a stay in a lower court’s ruling that lifted the government gag order.
“[O]nce information that should remain confidential has been publicly disclosed, the genie is out of the bottle and we have not the means to put the genie back,” department lawyers wrote in the appeal.Conneticut Post
So while the FBI tries to prevent more Americans from dying, the ACLU has taken a mission to obstruct these efforts. Its been said by me before, and I will say it again…the ACLU has no concern for the safety of Americans. They fight every effort to protect us the government tries from metal detectors to random searches on the subways.
The argument between national security and the fear of losing our liberties in the process is really becoming an issue of our times. The ACLU is at the lead in this fight, working with organizations with known terrorist ties like CAIR, representing enemy combatants caught on the battle field, refusing money from organizations that are concerned their money might go to terrorist efforts, and fighting all administration efforts to prevent more terror attacks.
While the ACLU is getting concerned over the violation of the “rights” of our enemies, others don’t think we are doing enough.
Governor Mitt Romney raised the prospect of wiretapping mosques and conducting surveillance of foreign students in Massachusetts, as he issued a broad call yesterday for the federal government to devote far more money and attention to domestic intelligence gathering.
In remarks that caused alarm among civil libertarians and advocates for immigrants rights, Romney said in a speech to the Heritage Foundation that the United States needs to radically rethink how it guards itself against terrorism.
”How many individuals are coming to our state and going to those institutions who have come from terrorist-sponsored states?” he said, referring to foreign students who attend universities in Massachusetts. ”Do we know where they are? Are we tracking them?”
”How about people who are in settings — mosques, for instance — that may be teaching doctrines of hate and terror,” Romney continued. ”Are we monitoring that? Are we wiretapping? Are we following what’s going on?”
Many including the ACLU thinks these types of measures are drastic and open the slippery slope to the erosion of liberty. Many fear it would lead to government intrustion, and give way to the fear of a big brother society. Many argue that if we were to wiretap mosques, then why not wiretap all house of worship. Besides the fact that it isn’t Christians, Buddists, hindus, Jews, Wiccans, or even satanists that are plotting and killing thousands of people around the world; one would think that probable cause and common sense could dictate on issues such as this. Personally, if they were to wiretap a Church it would be a waste of time and resources, and a distraction from the very reason behind the idea of wiretapping the mosques. I think a balance could be found, but the ACLU isn’t interested in that.
Nancy Murray, director of education for the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, said international students are already forced to submit personal data to a federal database designed to let the government closely track them. Keeping closer tabs would only cause a greater chilling effect on scholars coming here from other countries.
”Now they’re beginning to think, ‘Well, why don’t we just go somewhere else?’ ” Murray said. ”We are really going to fall behind. It’s very shortsighted.”
Asked to respond to that criticism, Romney spokeswoman Julie Teer said last night that the governor has a ”realistic view” of what it takes to fight terrorism.
”The governor believes we can strike a balance between what is necessary to protect our homeland while respecting individual freedom and liberty,” Teer said.
Romney said he believes that both state and federal governments have a role in intelligence-gathering. It is the FBI’s job to do wiretapping and surveillance, he said, but Massachusetts has a responsibility to collect any useful information it can.
Perhaps you think these measures are extreme. Others think the only way to win is to get more extreme. Like I said before, it is becoming a central issue for our times. Many fear that we are crippled in the war to catering to the politically correct, and others fear we are becoming a police state sacrificing liberties to security.
We are in a war, and the enemy could care less about any rules. I personally think it insanity that the ACLU takes sides with the enemy, not just often, but every time. It is completely predictable to know which side the ACLU will choose when it comes to Christianity or Islam, America or America’s enemies.
Recently a student was arrested under suspicion of terrorist plotting.
A university student from Egypt was ordered held without bond after prosecutors said they found a pilot’s uniform, chart of Memphis International Airport and a DVD titled “How an Airline Captain Should Look and Act” in his apartment.
The FBI is investigating whether Mahmoud Maawad, 29, had any connection to terrorists. He is awaiting trial on charges of wire fraud and fraudulent use of a Social Security number.
Maawad, who is in the United States illegally, told the judge during a hearing Thursday that he is studying science and economics at the University of Memphis.
The predictablity of the ACLU I mentioned earlier has some wondering when the ACLU will step in on this case. Despite the guy was here illegally, had many legitimate reasons to be suspected of terrorist activities, and actually committed illegal acts…it is almost a safe bet to put your money on the ACLU getting involved sooner or later. If it doesn’t happen, it was still a good guess. I think its obvious which side the ACLU has chosen in this war on terror, and its past time for someone to do something about it. Perhaps I might buy their B.S. if it were one or two cases, but I can’t give them credit for any legitimate concern of liberties when they consistently jeapordize American safety and rush to the side of the enemy time after time, and case after case.
Now a reporter for Al-Jazeera has been arrested for ties to Al Qaeda. This is no suprise. They want to work in the U.S. Don’t we have enough terrorists sympathizers and enablers like CAIR, and ACLU to deal with already?

The future of the country depends on a librarian’s name.
So, you want me to blindly trust the FBI? This organization with a questionable past as well as the organization who is violating their own rules regarding CI’s 98 npercent of the time?
Just checking…
Don’t blindly trust anyone or anything. Think for yourself. In this particular case, however I would trust them over the ACLU.
Another point, many people are lead to believe that the ACLU is a government organization — and it is not. They are a group of communists. And you are in fact correct, they do everything AGAINST your civil liberties and nothing to protect Americans.
