The ACLU Objects To Court Appointee - “Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher”
Posted on July 19, 2005
!Wow! They don’t waste a minute! Here we go again. The ACLU, a supposedly non-partisan group fighting for the good of all of us, has launched their attack, an attack we told you (Link Here) that they were planning even before any nominees were discussed.
President Bush, after a lengthy process has nominated a very well qualified and evenhanded candidate to the Supreme Court. Judge John Roberts while being a steadfast conservative has a long history of being very fair and impartial. He has followed the law, many times over his own beliefs. And yet the ACLU has seen fit to…
“express deep concern about some of the civil liberties positions advocated by Judge John Roberts. While serving as principal deputy solicitor general from 1989-1993, he authored briefs calling for Roe v. Wade to be overruled, supporting graduation prayer, and seeking to criminalize flag burning as a form of political protest.
‘All these positions were rejected by the Supreme Court,” said Steven Shapiro, the ACLU’s National Legal Director. “But the Supreme Court remains closely divided on many of these questions.’ “….
” ‘ The stakes could not be higher,’ Romero added.” Source
The ACLU criticizes this and other positions Judge Roberts has advocated in the courts without regard to the fact that he was advocating his clients wishes, not necessarily his own.
The ACLU is showing their true stripes, and simply are trying to obstruct a judge solely on the fact that he is conservative. The ACLU can’t stomach any conservatives on the court, not even a well qualified, even handed moderate like Judge Roberts. Non-partisan sure, Mr. Romero, ” The stakes could not be higher,” indeed.

As I said on someone else’s blog, these democrats who oppose Bush’s highly qualified nominee will be exposed for what they are and who they’re really working for.
Roberts is an acceptable nominee. I do not believe he will be a legislative judicial (not too often) and I believe he will generally be a strict interpreter based on his judicial rulings. He is a seasoned attorney and as a judge has a decent history of interpretation instead of rhetoric. He received a unanimous Senate confirmation as an Appeals Judge 2 years ago. While we could have done better, we could have done far worse. I am, not pleased, but I am satisfied. If I were a US Senator, I would not argue against Roberts, based on what I know of him.
Good to hear Joseph! I will remember it as I watch you liberal comrades whine. If I see you join in, I will call you on it.
The problem with Roberts is that he isn’t a Left wing activist who legislates from the bench, which is the only way that the Dems can push through their agenda.
Roberts was my one true hope in all of this (because of his Pro-Life stance), and the White House has done an outstanding job of keeping his name out of the press.
He is a great lawyer and Judge, and he has done a great deal in garnering respect from both parties.
Democrats and left wing interest groups are going to have a tough time stopping his confirmation.
Great post!
But oh how they will try!
That’s for sure Jay, and it will be chosing the wrong battle in my opinion. I guess the old cliche would be “pick your battles wisely, because you may win the battle, but you won’t win the war”. That is if… the Democrats follow traditional wisdom; however, that hasn’t been seen for quite some time now.
The dems haven’t picked the correct battle yet. No reason they should start now.
This is an ecxcellent choice. To oppose him shows the left for the mean spirited ideologues they truly are. I can’t wait to here fat, old Teddy huffing, puffing, stuttering and losing his train of thought. And, of course, Babs Boxer crying and Schumer having a temper tantrum because no one will answer his half-assed questions. Let the games begin.
I can’t wait to see how the battle shakes out.
I think the hate-speak in here is a little out of hand. The fight hasn’t even started yet. Even my buddy Harry Reid said he accepts that Roberts is very much qualified. I don’t believe any Democratic Senator has been anything but civilized about this so far. And remember my friends, ALL OF THEM VOTED FOR ROBERTS two years ago. Why will they fight him now? I’d say you guys are jumping the bandwagon here. Wait to see what happens first if you don’t mind.
Joseph? This is hate speak? All I’m saying is ACLU is ready to fight.
If this is “hate speak,” what is it on the Daily Kosbat and the DU? Do we have an adjective for that?
The Dems can talk pretty, but, when push comes to shove, folks like Teddy, Schumer (who’s trying to make a name for himself, other then the “other Senator from NY”), Kerry, Boxer, et al, will go negative and personal.
Look friends, all I’m saying is let’s let the stupid PAC’s do the fighting. As long as the Senators keep it civil, which they so far have, let’s do the same. I don’t have anything against Roberts and unless something comes up, which seems unlikely, I say we should have a civil confirmation hearing. If it gets nasty, so be it. If it doesn’t, let’s try and do the same. That’s all I am saying guys. Cheers!
