Fish Wrap – “Hey, Pass The Unemployment Extension Already!”

The NY Times Editorial Board provides a perfect example of Liberal World Thought: Cutting Off The Unemployed

It was bad enough when the Senate left town for a long Memorial Day break without passing a bill to extend expiring unemployment benefits. It’s worse now.

Back in session for nearly three weeks, the Senate still has not acted. That means that 900,000 jobless workers have already lost their benefits, a number that will swell to an estimated 1.6 million people if an extension is not passed by the July Fourth holiday. Lost benefits — the average check is $309 a week — deprives struggling Americans of cash they need for buying food, paying the rent or mortgage and other essentials.

Here’s a thought: how about crafting policies and legislation that actually stimulates businesses, particularly white collar and small businesses, which have mostly been ignored, to hire? Wouldn’t it be immeasurably more desirable for people to be working, rather than on the public dole because jobs aren’t available? Unless one wants a short term job with the Census, of course. Instead of creating a parasite class, we could have people standing proud as they head off to work. And Democrats yammering on about potentially raising taxes, saying they are not bound by Obama’s tax pledge, does not help.

Of course, it is mostly the Republicans fault

At the same time, many lawmakers — mostly Republicans, but not all — are claiming that extending jobless benefits and aid to states is simply too costly. That may sound like good politics, but it is very bad economics. If the government fails to keep spending when the economy is weak, especially on core safety-net issues, it will only worsen unemployment and impede the chances of recovery.

Hmm, interesting. The NY Times and all their peeps whined about spending under President Bush as they complained that the economy was bad. Now, spending un-godly amounts of money with a Democrat President and Congress is good. Anyone else see a problem with this picture?

Where does the government get the money for this spending? Government actually produces little of value for sale, so, the money either comes through taxes or deficit spending. Business owners know that at some point, that bill will become overdue, so, taxes will be raised for government’s indulgence. Therefore, they cut back, and do not hire. If all they see is the potential for higher costs because of legislation or potential legislation, they cut back, and do not hire. Democrat’s are the people who give you a fish, paid for by someone else.

Hello. Speaking as a 60-year-old unemployed man who is not one bit responsible for this current economic mess, I just want the extension passed or I will lose my apartment, car etc and most likely have to live with some relative. If the Senate was TRULY worried about deficit spending, the Medicare bill and the $60 billion for Afghanistan would not have passed either. BUT THEY DID!!! Just shows where the Repudiates priorities lie-with the rich doctors and the massively bloated military. Didn’t we have enough of that baloney with Reagan and both Bushwhackers? PLEASE pass the relatively small unemployment extension and let us MILLIONS out here get on with what life we have left!!

Let me ask you a question, James: wouldn’t it be better if you were able to start a new job? You would make more $$, have a better life, etc.

But, hey, you seem to want to live on the public dole and blame Bush and Republicans.

Mr. Teach, I’m sure James and I and the other million or so ppl not getting extension checks would much prefer to be working and being paid what we made before we were laid off, sized down, displaced or whatever PC term for unemployed you want to use. I also imagine James, like most of us, has applied for many jobs, eventually turning to low paying subsistence jobs for minimum wage—because guess what? People who are on unemployment are workers. We weren’t sitting at home begging the gov’t to take care of us. But unless you are planning to hire James (and the rest of us), try not to be so snotty and disdainful of our situation. The vast majority of us did not and do not choose to be on unemployment.

    Interesting information: please read

Average US Salary (from SSA) 41,334.97
Average # hours worked 2080, (40 hours per week)
    Average pay per hour $19.87

    Working 260 days a year

Average Unemployment being paid to laid off workers 265.00 per week
that figures out to $13,780.00 annually)
Average pay per hour $6.63 (figure a 40 hour week)

The Senate has voted “NO” to the extension for unemployment benefits citing too much overspending in the government as the reason…..

Annual Salary for the House $174,000.00
Annual Salary for the Senate $174,000.00
    http://www.thecapitol.net/FAQ/payandperqs.htm

    Time in Session in 2009:

House 1247 hours, pay per hour $139.54. # of days worked (in Session) 159 days

Senate 1421 hours, pay per hour $122.45. # of days worked (in Session) 191 days

while your here check out the number of bills introduced and the number of laws enacted,if any company had that kind of percentage of output it would long have been out of business.

I think y’all are missing my point: wouldn’t it have been better to push legislation and policies which got people back to work in the first place, as well as now, rather than simply looking for ways to keep people on unemployment?

Appearances aside, I do know what you are saying, and certainly sympathize, I know Manu people in the same situation.

These crazy politicians who do not care about the starving unemployed should never call themselves a christian again. The ones who voted against the passing of the extension need to be remebered next election and voted out. Please someone compile a list of the nays so everyone will remember these heartless bastards.

I have been unemployed since Feb. 1, 2010. I have sent mailed, fax, email over 100 resumes, not just for positions that I have worked in but other positions that maybe they are willing to train me in, I have received 2 phone calls for interviews and nothing. I have three more chks coming and then hopefully will be eligible for extension cause if not I will be homeless. They should also make a 5th tier. People who have exhausted their benefits with families not will go to welfare and the government will just spend more money. Monthly welfare ck., food stamps, and medicaid so HEEELLLLOOOO which is cheaper for them.

Teach use your brain. We would much rather have jobs. But while unemployment is at 10 percent we need benefits or more people will lose homes, buisness will lose money and economy will tank. Also its quite funny how you forget the republicans created this recession we are in. Not sayin I agree with dems reaction to fighting it, but that’s what its is, dems trying to get out of the recession GOP gave us.

  9. William Teach on June 23rd, 2010 7:54 pm

Maria, whether you believe it or not, I will pray for you, and hope you, and the others, will soon be employed.

However, it would have been better if Congress and the President had pushed policies and legislation that would have incented businesses to hire, rather than getting to the point we are in.

How did Republicans create this situation? Democrats have had control of Congress since 2007, when the economy started going in the tank. Furthermore, their policies, legislation, and talking points, as well as their wiffle waffling, have not created a situation where companies want to hire. The Dems care more about intentions, rather than results.
