Tuesday Debate: Are National Worker ID Cards A Good Idea?
Would you be surprised to learn that Lindsey Graham is working with Chuck Schumer to push this idea?
Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.
Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.
While there have certainly been some on the Right who have been against any sort of national ID card, it is primarily the Left who has opposed this notion. Going back to 1998, the ACLU has complained about them as violating civil rights. All through the Bush years, the ACLU and other liberal groups have complained about them. And the ACLU has been complaining about this ID of a national worker card since July 2009. Not quite sure why, since it sounds very socialist/commie.
ACLU attorney Chris Calabrese points out that a biometric national ID system would not only create a “No-Work List” ensnaring lawful workers — like American citizens — due to the high error rate in federal databases, but it would also establish a hugely expensive new federal bureaucracy.
Wait, “a hugely expensive new federal bureaucracy”? Yet the ACLU supports national health care. Moving on, that’s a different subject, Calavrese is correct. The federal government already does a piss poor job with their databases. Just consider the terrorist watch list, which has an 8 year old boy on it.
(From the WSJ link at top) “It is fundamentally a massive invasion of people’s privacy,” said Chris Calabrese, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union. “We’re not only talking about fingerprinting every American, treating ordinary Americans like criminals in order to work. We’re also talking about a card that would quickly spread from work to voting to travel to pretty much every aspect of American life that requires identification.”
Personally, I feel the best way to deal with illegal immigration is to put the burden on the companies who hire illegals. Make it extraordinarily expensive if they get caught with illegals on the payroll and they have not done due diligence to make sure the person is eligible to work. That would take care of a large chunk of the illegals here to work, allowing law enforcement to deal with those who are here to be bad guys.
Anyhow, how would you, as a United States citizen, feel about having to carry a card giving you the OK to work?

Seems to me to be a bad idea.
We will take the late Senator Ted Kennedy at his word, when he stated in 1986 Simpson-Mazzoli bill: “This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.1 to 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forward another amnesty bill like this.” End of Quote. OVER 5 MILLION GOT NATIONALIZED. SO BE IT! We will take this venerated, liberal politician as his word. NEVER ANOTHER AMNESTY. Whatever law they try to enact, the American people will not tolerate any kind of AMNESTY. Disguise it as they may, no Comprehensive Immigration Reform will ever pass. Illegal aliens will remain “Illegal” and stay that way, as patriotic citizens, sovereignty lovers will–NEVER–allow this abomination to pass. Whatever the outcome of the discussions between Sen. Chuck Schumer, Lindsey Graham of any other partisanship play on the illegal immigration explosion. No matter if our politicians to erode E-Verify, 287 (g) federal agreement with local police, slowing down on ICE raids or whatever method they us to confuse the public, these enforcement programs will remain.
No distraction will ever work, as American citizens are sick and tired of remaining jobless, while an estimated 8 million illegal nationals collect a pay checks–no matter the amount. We want our jobs back for a own kids, veterans and seniors, instead of companies hiring discount workers. We are now dealing with the monstrous backlash of astronomic costs, that have amplified in support for illegal aliens who have cheated the entitlement system. Amendments to the 1986 Immigration Control and Reform Act may be possible, but if you want to settle in America, you follow the Rule of Law.and enter America through the front gates. Obama will give amnesty to the illegals — wait and see. They will be shoe-in votes for him. All they want this for is to find the illegals so they can give them amnesty or make them legal — call it what you Votes for the DEMS will be what is the end-result and exacty what they are looking for. He is going to strong arm the congressmen to vote on Health Care DEFORM as well. As Herman Cain says —- put lipstick on a PIG and it is still a PIG!!!
They’ll slowly add stuff as years go by I know my government well and judging by their track record it speaks for itself. They don’t uphold their own immigration laws now and they expect us to believe by surrendering more freedoms to them on the the guise of “security” or “protection” that I should give up more rights?
This card will be more of a downfall from where we are with our freedoms and liberty so this is another avenue to take away more from you in the name of illegal immigration. Then it will be something else under the guise of the war on terror. Do you people actually believe our government is going to give back those liberties when the wars over? Maybe that’s why there is no end to the war on terror this madness will continue. Just look at this country now with the Patriot act there is nothing patriotic about it. Soon this country will be unrecognizable there will be no true America or beacon of hope, torch of liberty and real freedom in the world because people will fall for this hook line and sinker in snuffing it out.
According to the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence, I have rights and I fully intend of upholding those rights that the Federal Government is not to intrude nor infringe on those rights and it has and continues to do so. We as the people need to vote these crooks out of office that promote tyranny with McCain and Lieberman’s bill of “Belligerents” and Lindsey Graham and Chuck Schumer’s solution with their tax cattle body farming tagging of the American people. This is not freedom ladies and gentleman.
I suggest you look and read and understand those founding documents that I have listed above before any of you who are against our founding principals spout “your” beliefs because some don’t share them. The founding documents tell me I don’t have to agree with you and says that our freedoms will not be infringed. I cherish my freedoms and liberties and hold them dear to my heart. Many have lost their lives in combat defending what some of these blind people are giving away freely and its with great sadness that I see articles where people just willfully give them away backing this kind of tyrannical legislation.
I have at least 10 different ways to prove who I am and there is plenty of bureaucracy to check those credentials in place already so the answer is more government and more rights to privacy to be herded and willfully surrendered under the guise of “we know better than you of what you need and how you should live” or “we can protect you but…..” I don’t need another form of identification to add to the pile and more “Big Government bureaucracy” isn’t gonna solve anything when they don’t bother doing their job now. If you are for this technology you go “herd” yourself up to the counter and get one doesn’t mean I have too.
My rights and freedoms tell me me I don’t have to agree with you nor comply with any NAZI demand of barcoding like tax cattle on a body farm. If anybody wants this then you go get an eartag like a bull or cow so the government can scan you and put you in their pen doesn’t mean I have too. I can take care of myself, I don’t need Big Government to hold my hand like a lost heifer grazing in the pasture.
This isn’t freedom, this is tyranny and if you can’t see where this is leading “progressively” you are either too blind or too dumb to understand the real sense of freedom and liberty.
Farmers tag their cattle herd and brand them on a farm as a form of property and I am no ones property! I believe it was the elephant man that said ” I am not an animal I am a human being.”
Any congressman or senator who pushes and drafts illegal legislation such as this needs who have the bill and all related documents seized and arrest those politicians for High Treason against the people of the United States. Same goes for the garbage McCain and Joe Leiberman are proposing with their detention of American citizens they call belligerents. The bill is so vague that anyone who is against this criminal behavior can be detained for speaking out against these illegal draconian laws that are sidestepping our founding documents that are the heart and root of this nation and this must stop. It’s a violation of our rights and is contradictory to what we are assured under these documents for the American people as a nation.

Very well said, “freedom falling away”. I should not have to be fingerprinted or vein-scanned in order to go to work to sustain myself. This law never needs to be written; much less passed into law. They slid the (un)Patriot Act on us – hopefully history won’t repeat itself with these latest two attempts.
