Second Grader Suspended For “Violent Drawing.” Can You Guess Of Whom?
If you thought “Barack Obama,” nope. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Al Gore? Nope. Welcome to Taunton, Ma.
A Taunton father is outraged after his 8-year-old son was sent home from school and required to undergo a psychological evaluation after drawing a stick-figure picture of Jesus Christ on the cross.
The father said he got a call earlier this month from Maxham Elementary School informing him that his son, a second-grade student, had created a violent drawing. The image in question depicted a crucified Jesus with Xs covering his eyes to signify that he had died on the cross. The boy wrote his name above the cross.
The child, whose name is being withheld to protect him, is a special needs student who is 8 years old. Think this will traumatize him? Well, yes. The story points out that he has had trouble going back to school after the suspension and mandatory counseling, and the school administrators have approved a transfer request to another school.
How did the sketch come about (which you can see at the link)?
The student drew the picture shortly after taking a family trip to see the Christmas display at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, a Christian retreat site in Attleboro. He made the drawing in class after his teacher asked the children to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas, the father said.
I believe that he was on his way to understanding the true meaning of Christmas, that it is about Jesus (though, about his birth, not Crucifixion, of course.)
Any one want to make a bet on whether he would have been suspended had he drawn George Bush being crucified?
A valuable lesson in political correctness? I expect the ACLU to swoop in and protect free speech and religious expression pro bono any minute now.
Michelle Malkin provides some contrasting situations.

Sorry, but this IS the state of Massachusetts — a state that has already and repeatedly ruled that ALL parental rights cease at the school room door. NO parent is allowed to say anything about anything that happens inside the school doors. Yes, literally.
Sue the school, the state, the ACLU for civil rights violations and fostering an atmosphere of hatred and exclusion.
Why are we assuming this is anti-Christian prejudice, and not a decision made by the school based on its existing policy regarding keeping students safe? Only in the full Associated Press story have I seen this detail mentioned:
“Johnson said the teacher became upset when his son said he drew himself on the cross. ”
If my 2nd grader had drawn a picture that depicted herself having been killed, I would prefer the school to respond with excessive caution rather than not enough. Notify parents? Absolutely. Required psych consultation? Sounds very reasonable. Parents’ expense? Tough call, but perhaps better to let the parents pick the psychologist, to avoid accusations of a biased evaluation – in which case, yeah, parents’ expense. Suspension? If that’s what the policy called for, not unreasonable, though a review and fine-tuning of the policy seems called for.
And of course, the blogger’s “George Bush” comment is absurd. Of course the school would follow policy no matter who (Bush, Obama, the kid himself, his father, the teacher, a classmate) was on the cross. The only exception I can imagine is if it was Jesus.
And for those that are so outraged, where do you stand on the young Wiccan being sent home, and/or being told to hide her pentacle in Oklahoma? Hmmm?? There was apparently another picture involved in this. I’d like to see it. For those that weren’t paying attention, he wrote HIS name above “Jesus”, not INRI. Why would an 8 year old do that, and more importantly what was the other picture of?. For the record, I drew WAY more violent stuff as a child. The nuns were horrified. I grew up to be one of the nicest people you may ever meet. It was just my way of “dealing”. Better than beating people up anyways. I don’t remember there being any real backlash against Christianity in this country, until the “holy rollers” started to try jamming THEIR religion down everyone’s throats. I really noticed it when I was in the Army. Some people cannot just leave other people alone. Jerks. As a wiccan, I still say Merry Christmas to those I know believe in it. For me, it’s Winter Solstice. Same decorations pretty much, which is nice.
