As an SCC student, I was very surprised by the events as they were presented. The administration was quite cavalier with their illegal recall election. When I asked the guy working the table what Macias was being recalled for exactly, I was told bluntly that it was because of the anti-abortion display.

Macias has since resigned as president. To me this represents a savage defeat for free speech. I totally understand that people might have been offended, but in my estimation if you work to silence those you disagree with, you have already lost the debate.

And isn't that one of the beautiful aspects of college? We can come together to share our different perspectives without fear of oppression. Only when the freedom of speech is protected, even for those who are radical or misguided, can our perspectives be cross-pollinated and therefore evolved.

Additional dirt: There was a reporter working for the Express who was removed from his position for being pro-Macias. He was in the process of writing a comprehensive article and had done extensive investigative journalism on the subject. I find this to be further evidence of the school's intolerance to alternative perspectives.

The message the students are getting from the faculty is this: GO ALONG WITH OUR AGENDA OR BE DESTROYED.

I am a pro-choice student, and yet I want to defend this guy. I disagree with his position, but I deeply believe in the sanctity of an open and free forum for discussion.

I believe the responsibility to protect the rights of the students falls squarely on the administration's shoulders. As a student, I am apprehensive about openly speaking out, because my academic future could be in jeopardy.

Also, I find it more than a bit macabre that free speech was so openly condemned on "Constitution Day" of all times. What a bad joke!

VP Dixon is a middle-aged woman going to school on her own dime.

SCC is a CITY college; no ivory towers but we do have a few trailers we have classes in that are vaguely ivory-ish in appearance.

The author of this article has not read the email that he is writing about (between the teacher and Macias) or he'd be quite aware of just how tall a mountain Macias has made out of this molehile.

The "Genocide Awareness Project" was not presented to the ASG as an anti-abortion group; if it had been they may not have voted to have it on campus.

The fact that Steve lied is why he's being recalled.

And no amount of childish name calling this hack of a blogger, or anyone else in Mr. Macias' corner, is going to change the fact that his tactics are Rovian, his theology is fundamentalist, and his opposition is legion.

I must say that while I agree with the overall content of this story, their are is one thing that cough my eye. The Quote that you attribute to Debbie Dixon is taken out of context. You put her quote as

"“I am highly offended, I have rights, just as they have rights to not be offended!” .

Then you go on to say that she was against this group. When, if you read the whole quote from the story that you linked to which is

“I am highly offended,” the ASG Vice President Debbie Dixon said. “I have rights, just as they have rights to not be offended!” Somehow, this is justification for tossing a group off of a public campus? Don’t schools teach about free speech anymore, or do they just teach that if you are offended you can violate others’ constitutional rights to free speech?

She is agreeing with the fact that just because you are offended does not give any one the right to to trample on someone else's rights.
