Obama Hiding Budget Deficit Numbers

Posted on July 20, 2009

I think it’s obvious as to why. He wants his socialist healthcare program to pass, and he wants it in a rush because his political capital is running dry as his failures add up. If the numbers were good there would be no reason to delay, but he is already getting a fight as his poll numbers drop and the deficit rises from his botched stimulus plan. He can’t afford more bad numbers right now.

The White House is being forced to acknowledge the wide gap between its once-upbeat predictions about the economy and today’s bleak landscape.
The administration’s annual midsummer budget update is sure to show higher deficits and unemployment and slower growth than projected in President Barack Obama’s budget in February and update in May, and that could complicate his efforts to get his signature health care and global-warming proposals through Congress.
The release of the update — usually scheduled for mid-July — has been put off until the middle of next month, giving rise to speculation the White House is delaying the bad news at least until Congress leaves town on its August 7 summer recess.
The administration is pressing for votes before then on its $1 trillion health care initiative, which lawmakers are arguing over how to finance.

Yid with a Lid:

At a time when Congress is judging whether to commit trillions of dollars on Health Care and Cap and Trade, the Obama administration is hiding key information because it might hurt his agenda.

Whatever happened to that hopeful change of transparency Obama promised?

The Anchoress:

I am waiting to hear the outrage in the press, over the heavy-handed, brazen and rather arrogant moves of a president who sounded downright thuggish last week when he went before the microphone and said this monstrosity was going to pass, and it was going to pass quickly and “I mean it.”

President Obama’s daily finger-wags and bully-pulpits are not in the mode ala President Bush, who said, “I have all this political capital, and I’m going to spend it,” which the press found unpardonably arrogant. It’s not even Obama saying, “I won,” which made the media giggle. This withholding of public information/ramming through of legislation is a whole ‘nother kind of arrogance.

Ed Morrissey:

This is a shell game, a 3-card Monty being played by the Obama administration. They are withholding data that rightfully belongs in the public square, so that the electorate can inform themselves of the nation’s fiscal standing before Congress votes to spend more of our grandchildren’s money. Perhaps the news media might remind Obama of this during his prime-time presser on Wednesday.

Book cooking time?
