Read the Legislation Before Passing It

Posted on July 10, 2009

Colin Hanna of Let Freedom Ring discusses with Fox News Megan Kelly his pledge to get politicians to read every bill before voting on them. What a novel concept. It is shameful we actually have to discuss this concept.

Lobo adds: Coburn sponsors Enumerated Powers Act

U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) has sponsored legislation giving members of Congress more procedural tools to stop unconstitutional legislation. It’s just another reason to support Coburn’s re-election campaign.

According to Coburn’s press announcement, the Enumerated Powers Act requires the following:

1) Each Act of Congress shall contain a concise explanation of the specific constitutional authority relied upon for the enactment of each portion of that Act.

2) Failure to include such an explanation gives “rise to a point of order in either House of Congress.”

3) In the Senate, the point of order must be voted on by the Senate. Up to three hours of debate is allowed on the point of order.

Watch Sen. Coburn’s floor speech on the Enumerated Powers Act.

Not only is it shameful that our representatives be forced to read bills prior to voting on them… it’s a sad day when “common sense” must be legislated.

How in Hell did a man with common sense even manage to get elected?

I wish there was a practical way to test a senator’s or representative’s knowledge of a bill before allowing him or her to vote on it.
