Hoyer: Few Would Vote for the Health Care Bill If They Actually Had to Read It

Posted on July 8, 2009

Oops! The truth slipped out!

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Tuesday that the health-care reform bill now pending in Congress would garner very few votes if lawmakers actually had to read the entire bill before voting on it.
“If every member pledged to not vote for it if they hadn’t read it in its entirety, I think we would have very few votes,” Hoyer told CNSNews.com at his regular weekly news conference.

Hoyer was responding to a question from CNSNews.com on whether he supported a pledge that asks members of the Congress to read the entire bill before voting on it and also make the full text of the bill available to the public for 72 hours before a vote.
In fact, Hoyer found the idea of the pledge humorous, laughing as he responded to the question. “I’m laughing because a) I don’t know how long this bill is going to be, but it’s going to be a very long bill,” he said.

Hmmm…so according to Hoyer, we should not expect those we vote to represent us to actually know what they are voting for. We should just blindly vote for what the said intention is and trust no fine print pork or crap is in there. In other words, we should expect our politicians to be empty suits, and careless ones at that. If its too complex and time consuming a bill to know what you are voting for, you probably shouldn’t vote for it.

Ed Morrissey:

A good rule of thumb: if a Representative or a Senator can’t be expected to read it, it shouldn’t pass into law. Apply this standard, and watch how that stops the growth of government and the stupidities of the law.

Yes, what are we thinking? We don’t pay these clowns enough to actually do their jobs!

Ameripundit:

I’m sorry, but how much do we pay members of Congress? Oh yes, a base of $174,000 per year for rank-and-file back-benchers. In his role as House Majority leader the American people pay Steny Hoyer to the tune of $193,400 per year. And that doesn’t include book sales, eventual kickbacks received from securing pork, and the other benefits received by our suppsoed representatives. I’m thinking members of Congress can take the time to read proposed legislation at that salary level. It’s not like they’re volunteering their time.

Actually, this article’s headline (and HotAir’s as well) is misleading.

What I understand Hoyer to say is that if senators waited to read the bill before voting on it, none would (because they wouldn’t/couldn’t/hadn’t read it).

Not that it’s any better – he’s saying congress-critters aren’t interested in reading the bills…

Never mind – I misread the headline myself!!

I’ll credit them with a little bit of honesty, in that they don’t even PRETEND to give a damn.

This is a Biden-esque gaffe. What’s really scary is how truthful it is.
