I also find it fascinating how lack of health insurance equates to lack of health care and, therefore, a death sentence...

This is the basis of their entire argument, that they are one and the same, even though they are two completely different species. By making them appear the same (or at least one dependent upon the other), they are capable of eliciting much more sympathy, empathy, pity, or whatever it is they are seeking (beyond utter control of every aspect of every American's life in general, that is).

A simple and far less costly solution would be to abandon comprehensive insurance and implement "universal" major medical, which would not only protect us in times of severe, chronic, and/or terminal illnesses, but would eliminate the "debate" about doctors "abusing" testing unnecessarily as patients will be more apt to question the necessity - and thereby gain some KNOWLEDGE about their medical condition(s) with a thorough explanation as to why testing may be needed - if the cost is coming out of their own pocket. Likewise, medications: If drug X for hypercholesterolemia costs the patient $300 a month versus following a healthier lifestyle, diet and exercise, that patient might be more prone to make those changes (without being forced to by asinine taxation) so they don't NEED the medication.

Unfortunately, this solution removes power from the manipulators and schemers in the government and returns it to the people, with whom it rightly belongs, so it would never be considered.
