Obama To Announce Plans To Drastically Increase Auto Costs

Posted on May 19, 2009

When you go to the auto lot starting in 2012, expect your choices to be golf cart sized vehicles

President Obama will announce tough new nationwide rules for automobile emissions and mileage standards on Tuesday, embracing standards that California has sought to enact for years over the objections of the auto industry and the Bush administration.

The rules, which will begin to take effect in 2012, will put in place a federal standard for fuel efficiency that is as tough as the California program, while imposing the first-ever limits on climate-altering gases from cars and trucks.

Let’s see. California has the highest fuel costs in the country. The plan could raise the cost of a vehicle by up to $1,300. British Columbia was urged not to match the California emissions standards, because it “ would drive up vehicle prices because of the cost of technology needed to make them, as well as increasing repair costs and insurance rates.” So many of the vehicles that Americans, including Al Gore Disciples, rely on, SUVs, pickups, larger vehicles, would go buh bye.

And this begs the question: will current owners of autos have to make changes to them to comply with the new regulations, much as people who want to bring some vehicles to California must? Will we have to do away with black vehicles?

There is so much to this debate, such as the whole man-induced global warming idiocy, the Federal government interfering with States Rights, government dictating policy even more to auto makers, particularly those who took bailout money, and, who is going to want these micro-mobiles, anyway? Sure, a few will. But, the rest of us will be left with no choice. I thought the Left was interested in choice?

To meet the new federal standards, auto companies will have to drastically change their product lineups in a relatively short time.

The companies have declined so far to comment on the costs involved in meeting a fleet standard of 35 miles a gallon. For starters, the automakers will probably have to sharply reduce the number of low-mileage models, like pickup trucks and large sedans.

But, certainly not for all the limo’s that the top climahysterics drive in. Folks like Al Gore, the Hollyweird folks, and, hey, Barack Obama. Not to mention all the large size SUVs that drive with the presidential motorcade. “Do as I say, not as I do.”

Michelle Malkin points to more of the anticipated costs laid right at the feet of the middle and working classes, including the auto deaths directly laid at the feet of CAFE standards.

The Other McCain: They can have my gass guzzler when they pry it from my cold dead fingers!

Beltway Snark wonders how Team Obama knows what the price of gas will be in 2016. Speaking of gas prices, notice that none of the Usual Suspects are complaining about the price continuing to go up, now that O’Barry is president?

Why lie and state that the auto industry is not for this?

When a person looks at the news list on Google your article title and abstract makes you look like a moron.

“Energy security and climate change are national priorities that require federal leadership, and the president’s direction makes sense for the country and the industry,” GM chief executive Fritz Henderson said in a statement released Monday. “GM and the auto industry benefit by having more consistency and certainty to guide our product plans.”

Could you point out where I stated that the auto industry is not for this? Put up or shut up.

I’d like to know what gives the federal government the right to initiate policies like this along with so many others. What allowance is made in the constitution for the government to have the power to dictate to the people things such as this? Beyond protection from foreign invaders and the regulation of interstate commerce; they shouldn’t be involved in much else. Things are totally out of hand and the people must take back the power from this out of control, authoritarian government.

This could put the final nail in Detroit’s coffin. The costs to ramp up production and tech by that date and change facilities around is going to be very costly for the producers as well.

Expect the need for more loans by the car companies if they don’t just fold.

It’s definitely going to hit the middle America pocket book in the long run.

Why will the insurance rates go up? What does the gas emissions have to do with insurance rates? Or do they fear that road rage is going to go up even more due to the fact that people are going to be ticked off driving around in clown cars.

  6. William Teach on May 19th, 2009 1:19 pm

Often, insurance rates on smaller cars are higher due to their inability, and the humans inability, to survive crashes, even small ones.

  7. SouthernRoots on May 19th, 2009 1:40 pm

Higher auto prices. Higher insurance rates. The poor will not be able to afford the newer cars for some time.

In order to force the people to buy the new cars, government will increase gas prices through taxation because many have suggested that the “new” energy will not be accepted unless gas prices are sustained at over four dollar a gallon.

In order to recoup the revenue lost by higher fuel efficiency, government will need to raise “mobility” taxes. Mileage taxes, toll roads, congestion pricing, etc.

Movement will be more expensive and food prices will rise. Heating prices will skyrocket.

This will significantly hit poorer people. They will become poorer and even more dependent upon daily government assistance.

If the cars are supposed to decrease in size, where am I supposed to fit my children? Is this another way to dictate how many children per family?

  9. Chuck on May 19th, 2009 7:19 pm

My God, we will not be able to buy whatever we want, when we want. We will have to drive less, our lifestyles will have to change. Welcome to the real world, America.

  10. Alex on May 19th, 2009 7:33 pm

All this for an unproven “science.”

  11. William Teach on May 19th, 2009 7:40 pm

So, Chuck, since you seem to be in Pennsylvania, will you give up your big vehicle? The real world is that there is no greater nation than America for our freedoms. You folks on the left spent 8 years complaining that Bush was violating our rights, yet now that Obama is actually taking away our freedoms left and right, you folks are quiet. Why is that?

Nevermind the issue of global warming which so many of you wingnuts don’t even understand. Let’s focus on something you can understand: imported oil. If this country runs more efficiently, then we need less oil– this will, through the magic of something complicated which we call “economics” make the cost of oil fall. Maybe a new car will cost $1300 more to buy. *Buying* a car is the least of the cost, *running* a car costs big bux. Remember last summer? Gas at $4/gallon? A typical Detroit pig doesn’t even manage 20mpg, but let’s say you had a smaller car, or one with a smaller engine, and actually got 20mpg. To drive 15,000 miles/year at 20mpg with gas at $4/gallon would cost $3000 just in fuel. Dump the old car and get one that gets 30mpg and annual fuel costs drop to $2000/year. Drive the first car for seven years and you’ve ponied up $21K. Seven years of the more efficient ride would cost $14K. Subtract the $1300 difference and you’ve saved $12,700. If lightning struck and the cost of gas stayed at $2 (no such luck, it’s already more than $2 most places) the costs would be $1500 vs $1000, so in seven years the savings would be $3500– take away the $1300 and you’ve got $2200– the equivalent of driving two years for free.
In other words, the plan will either save money by keeping fuel costs down and getting more mpg, or else even in the face of rising fuel prices the average person will save nearly enough over the life of a car to buy a new one.
Oh, and where’s the ACLU in all this?
    Nitwits.

  13. Chuck on May 19th, 2009 9:10 pm

William, put down the kool-aid, get a passport (sure you don’t have one) and actually see the world sometime. All that stuff Michael Moore says concerning other countries? Some of it is true. Scary right? No greater nation for our freedoms? What freedoms? To waste money on things we don’t need? To drive cars that destroy the enviroment? To eat food and drink water that is poison? Yes I hope President Obama does take away those “freedoms”.

You folks on the right are just stomping your little feet because you were rebuked by a large majority of the nation and can’t handle it.

    Farmer Tom,
If you think anthropogenic global warming is a real issue, then you’re the one who doesn’t understand. Read and Learn Tom:

I won’t need to worry about $14K *OR* $21K after 7 years…. 6 months after being forced to drive a clown-mobile, some dink who cannot read and/or follow the speed limit signs will make sure I’m DRT: Dead Right There. Then you and your Dummycrap buddies can sit around wondering why YOUR insurance has gone up, with people being killed left and right.

Of course, you don’t really give a rat’s hind end about the HUMAN losses in this venture to save a few bucks, do you, “Farmer” Tom? (Is that supposed to be like Farmer Ted?) After all, it’s probably just a few less conservatives who are stupid enough to keep working to support the half of society that contributes NOTHING to their own welfare….

A couple of years ago it was shown that a Mini was safer than a Ford f150 (at the time the Us’ most popular vehicle) in a head on collision with a wall. To the extent that a Mini driver could walk away and a f150 driver would need cutting out of their vehicle. http://bridger.us/2002/12/16/CrashTestingMINICooperVsFordF150

And it’s not just crashing where the small car is as safe or safer than the big waste of space. They handle better, stop better and are less likely to be driven by selfish, self righteous fools who expect everyone else to get out of their way.

    Or how about this-
    http://www.driveandstayalive.com/info%20section/statistics/stats-multicountry-percapita-2004.htm

The USA’s fleet of predominantly overlarge vehicles is so safe it has one of the highest per capita death rates on its roads.
