Abortion Is “Murder Lite”

Posted on May 18, 2009

Neil Steinberg of the Chicago Sun-Times rolls up his sleeves to address a question that has liberals puzzled: What’s behind the anti-abortion frenzy?

The recent finding that a majority of Americans are now pro-life is dismissed as “a hard rightward swing among Republicans and nothing more.” After all, “human rights are not determined by majority vote, thank goodness.” By “human rights” he’s referring to the right to kill, not the right not to be killed.

He deals with those who believe in the sanctity of innocent human life by sneering that

it isn’t quite fair to pretend you’re part of the discussion. “Abortion is murder.” We get it; thanks.

If it’s not murder, what is it? Steinberg’s enlightened answer:

I consider this a gray region. Abortion isn’t murder — well, not until the last stage of pregnancy, when it is — but rather a sort of murder, murder lite, and I’m glad that I’ve conducted my life in such a way that I’ve never been party to one.

There’s no virtue, no sin, just a fetid swamp of nuance. Yet Steinberg still manages to indulge in moral preening, which he pulls off like a 90-year-old woman making coquettish expressions.

At last he reaches the conclusion that no one really cares about innocent lives getting snuffed out. If we did, we’d let liberals repeal the Second Amendment. Therefore, the pro-life movement consists of backwards prudes who think sex should only be allowed for procreation. Then comes “Today’s chuckle”:

I want to get an abortion. But my boyfriend and I are having trouble conceiving.

Yuk yuk.

I think abortion is not always murder, what if the girl got rapped. Why would she sacrifice her life and get embarrased by keeping the baby. When she could just abort the unborn child so she can live her life happily and let her family live a life without any tension?

Life is happy and free of tension after rape – with or without a pregnancy and/or abortion?

    Really.

The “pro-choice” movement does not allow for an actual choice: When abortion is the only option offered to many, there is really nothing to “choose” from, is there? Women today choosing to keep a pregnancy are stigmatized in much the same way they were in the past for conceiving out of wedlock, perhaps even more so and in a more aggressive and hostile manner. They are called greedy and selfish and worse. Look at how the Duggars are treated – and they don’t even subsidize their family with welfare dollars, on the taxpayers’ dole.

And don’t even get me started on the Roe and Doe arguments. They were taken WAY beyond and abused outside of any scope the court intended, not to mention the fact that “Roe” was herself disgusted at how her case was manipulated by the “pro-choice” movement and actively campaigned herself to get it overturned. How’s THAT for irony?

Valerie and whomever else is concerned,

Consider equal protection under the law. If a mother were to kill her boyfriend’s child because her boyfriend raped her then “would she be prosecuted for murder if the child was not in her womb?”

So the question becomes in what cases is homicide justified and that rule should apply whenever the victim is human, no matter what their location whether in out of his/her mother’s womb.

Much like the Left wanted the press to release photos of flag-draped coffins to show the horrible, horrible toll of Iraq and Afghanistan, I think everyone needs to see pictures of abortions so that they understand that those little coffins are draped with flags that have “choice” written on them.

Some consistency by them on this issue would just be terrific.
