Hope and Change: Suddenly Military Commissions for Gitmo Detainees Doesn’t Look So Bad

Posted on May 2, 2009

How is that idea about closing Gitmo going Obama? What? Can’t find any countries willing to take murdering jihadists into their country?

The Obama administration is moving toward reviving the military commission system for prosecuting Guantánamo detainees, which was a target of critics during the Bush administration, including Mr. Obama himself.
Officials said the first public moves could come as soon as next week, perhaps in filings to military judges at the United States naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, outlining an administration plan to amend the Bush administration’s system to provide more legal protections for terrorism suspects.
Continuing the military commissions in any form would probably prompt sharp criticism from human rights groups as well as some of Mr. Obama’s political allies because the troubled system became an emblem of the effort to use Guantánamo to avoid the American legal system.

One defintely has to wonder why this information was released on a weekend. Think they’re worried they might get a little flak from their libtard supporters?

Here is the best:

When President Obama suspended Guantánamo cases after his inauguration on Jan. 20, many participants said the military commission system appeared dead. But in recent days a variety of officials involved in the deliberations say that after administration lawyers examined many of the cases, the mood shifted toward using military commissions to prosecute some detainees, perhaps including those charged with coordinating the Sept. 11 attacks.
“The more they look at it,” said one official, “the more commissions don’t look as bad as they did on Jan. 20.”

Hmmmm…maybe the lesson here is to actually know what you are talking about before making ridiculous promises? Lesson learned? Before you know it he may actually say that jihadist are our enemies.

Mark Steyn:

Any day now, the new conventional wisdom will emerge: Obama has turned around Bush’s failed war on terror because he’s had the courage to do the tough things that, while not always attractive, are ruthlessly effective.

Jules Crittenden:

Because in a moralism born of utter naivete, Obama may not yet have figured out that in the heat of battle, in mortal combat, ugly things sometimes happen. Of course he can just ask House Speaker Pelosi. She actually knows something about that.

Ed Morrissey:

Hmm. Maybe they should have looked at it a little more before running for President on the promise of ending the only effective manner of trying terrorists captured in foreign countries. Many of us looked at it in much more detail, including Congress. Maybe Barack Obama wasn’t familiar with that, but that was the job he supposedly held before this one – the one where he postured for the Left while his colleagues in both parties worked to fashion a practical system of military tribunals to make sure that we locked up terrorists without damaging national security.
But, hey, actual governing is hard — harder than voting present, and certainly harder than casting politically-expedient votes when you know it won’t affect the outcome.

Kim Priestap:

Of course, when Obama finally addresses his backpedaling, he’ll argue that his suspending the military tribunals to begin with was the cautious thing to do, that he needed the time to examine the situation to make sure he took the course that balanced the rule of law and kept Americans safe at the same time.

Priestap nails it…Obama will backpedal and claim he needed time to look at it, as if all the countless hours behind closed doors in the Bush administration was spent playing Risk instead of actually working out the best course for the nation.

When all is said and done this administration is going to undo some important things, create a mess that will be even more painful to extricate ourselves from and put us in more danger than ever before.

    God Save the Republic.

Dear John, maybe they let this out due to the other info that leaked out, Obama To Release 17 Jihadis In USA. If anyone lives Virginia, I highly recommend you move.
