Gallup Poll Apparently Says Us Teabaggers Are Out Of Touch (?)
Posted on April 14, 2009
So says one of the leading Nutroots voices at MyDD
I’m sure it hasn’t gone unnoticed that I’ve been blogging a lot lately about how out of touch the right-wing is with mainstream public opinion. There is a consensus in this country of support for our president as well as his agenda that is driven by the opinions of Democrats and Independents. Republicans are increasingly out of touch and dwindling in numbers and influence.
As we approach tax day on Wednesday, which is also the culmination of the great right wing “grassroots” Tea Party movement, Gallup has a new poll out that shows that the country is actually quite sanguine about the amount of taxes they are paying.
Todd Beaton goes on to say he doesn’t really know what the Tea Parties are all about, and mentions something about the largest middle class tax cut evah! So, is a progressive finally acknowledging Bush’s tax cuts being for the middle class, or, is he claiming that the cut is Obama’s $13 a week ($8 next year) savings?
Anyhow, the gist of the poll shows that 48% of respondents think the taxes they pay are about right. But, hold on there, Todd, because 46% think they pay too much in taxes, and only 3% think taxation is too low. So, for a Party and Base that thinks raising taxes (always on another group other then the one they are in) is the cats meow, I rather think that the poll shows YOU are out of touch with mainstream America. Matter of fact, only 3% of Democrats think taxes are too low. Can I get a big WOOPS! on that one?
Perhaps President Obama and the Democrat Congress should take note of this poll, since Democrats love polls so much. So far, the “Bush tax cuts” are scheduled to expire in 2010, and the higher rates will kick in in 2011. If they do nothing, the rates will be the same as in 2001. Compare that with 2009. The capital gains rates are set to go up, as well. So, President Obama, what will you do to make sure that 95% of tax payers get a tax cut? What about your promise that the tax rate will only go up on those making $250,000 and higher? We will remember, you know. Elephants never forget. And you can’t stick those promises in a dark memory whole and think they will go away.
BTW, it is so funny that so many on the Left smear the Tea Parties, yet do not even understand what they are about. I guess the point of them is too black and white, and the Left only sees shades of grey. The Kosbatsdo not get it, nor what the poll says. Same with the commenter’s at Think Progress. PERRspectives is clueless on taxation, and manages to blame Bush for tax cheats. Remind me, which Party had what, 6-8 tax cheats nominated recently?
Soren Dayton at Red State points out that 40% of the people do not even pay income taxes, an all time high, so, what is the point of their opinion?
And let’s not forget that many states and municipalities are looking to raise taxes. And many are looking to implement cap and trade.

40% of the people do not even pay taxes
Wow! These people don’t pay sales taxes, excise taxes on alcohol or tobacco, vehicle registration fees, property taxes, the increased cost of products due to various tariffs, or state income taxes? That’s a pretty sweet deal.
Your use of the 40% number is either ignorant or dishonest.
your grammar is lacking as well.
40% do not pay INCOME taxes. Moron
I don’t believe polls! Polls are easily manipulated by demographics and the over sampling of independents and democrats, organizations that poll are media companies, that make money by selling advertising, title sponsorships, subscriptions, and content, and will always accommodate the payee of the poll with a favorable result! It makes good business sense. (ò¿ó)
“…BTW, it is so funny that so many on the Left smear the Tea Parties, yet do not even understand what they are about….”
I think we know “what they’re about”–they’re Tea Tantrums by which the spoiled rotten right can act out all of its various frustrations after losing the general election.
I fully support the right to free speech and peaceful dissent. I don’t know of anyone in my area–a very liberal region–who plans to counter protest, or who really cares all that much about the Tea Tantrums. By all means, carry on–and remember as you do so that during the Bush administration, liberal protesters with legal permits to assemble were hauled off by federal swat teams and held on buses for hours, and had to plead ‘guilty’ to some dubious trumped up charges in order to be released.
Oh, goody:
The Parser – What would we do without the Internet Grammar Police? These folks assiduously correct the online writings of others – never quite catching on that the Web is designed to be fast, fresh and sloppy.
Anything of substance to offer, becky and Dsalsberry? Or just typical leftist deflections?
Anything of substance to offer, becky and Dsalsberry? Or just typical leftist deflections?
Hey! Why was I left out?
I don’t believe incoherent blogs about incoherent polls. You seriously need a logic upgrade.
You were left out, UberMitch, because you offered substance. I did leave out the word income.
Viewer, you have just proven that you do not understand what the tea parties are about.
And liberal protesters were typically hauled off when they stopped being peaceful. Check that pesky 1st Amendment.
Thanks for your adult response, MAB.
“Tea Tantrums by which the spoiled rotten right….”
Yeah, those rotten productive people should just turn over their income to the government to redistribute to others cheerfully. How dare they complain.
So, if consitantly only 3% of Americans think taxes are too low and 97% think they are just right or too high, why do some politicians ALWAYS try to find ways to increase taxes?
I thought they represented We The People.
Goodness. I am going to enjoy my TEA TAX DAY with a spoonful of HONEY.
Yummy.
If I feel good enough I will walk to a rally if I don’t I will watch it all on FOX Cable while spipping my tea and honey.
Most of the time I watch large crowds on TV because I can see thousands more from a video report.
Watching the million or so people at the rallies will make me feel as warm and cozy as the TEA AND HONEY.
Make mine Green and uncaffeinated.
The article clearly says INCOME taxes. This is why the tax code needs to be overhauled completely and a flat tax instituted. Everyone pays a percentage, regardless of income. No deductions, no thick tax forms, no lawyers, no accountants, nothing. You make a 100 bucks you pay ten. You make 10,000 bucks you pay 100 dollars and so on. This way everyone has to chip in regardless. Or better yet overturn the 16th admendment where the federal gov’t cannot direct tax anyone’s income and then you pay as you purchase if the gov’t wants money. Our original constituion forbade the federal gov’t from direct taxing citizens – a shame that was done away with by President Taft, a member of the Skulls and Bones.
I thought I’d throw my “two-cents” in. My family and I, as well as a few neighbors will be attending our NH tea-party in Manchester NH. If you want to find me to say hello, I’ll be the person with a sign that reads “Not a Democrat, Not a Republican, but a PISSED OFF AMERICAN” The tea Party movement has little to do with polictical ideology but everything to do with out of control Gov spending. Today’s Washington politician’s have out spent every previous administration combined!
Lily, just who are you railing against? The Bush administration for lowering taxes on the wealthiest so that us hard working Americans have to bear the brunt? Conservative neo-liberal economic policy that created the conditions in which our economy has essentially collapsed, while eroded the earning power of hard working American employees? What?
Tea Tantrums. As I said, carry on if it makes you feel better.
“Conservative neo-liberal economic policy that created the conditions in which our economy has essentially collapsed, while eroded the earning power of hard working American employees?”
Oh so you’re trying to say the Community Reinvestment Act and the bogus promise to support lenders making loans to people with poor credit risks are conservative policies? Get a clue.
Carry on with the public floggings of Wall Street executives if it makes you feel better.
Viewer, I say this with compassion. Please do not lump me and my views in with how you perceive the Tea Party movement. My family and I have never made $250K but guess what, I aspire to someday. How? Through hard work and action. The law of physics states ‘objects in motion stay in motion. Objects at rest stay at rest.’ The point being we should be spreading a strong work ethic not government hand-outs. I, like many others, work in excess of 12 hours a day six or seven days a week owning a small business so my family can have a better life, not so I can pay the mortgage of some dead beat who got in over their head (Thanks to a Democratic Congress and the Bush Admin) or some Wall Street CEO who has their hands in the pocket of so many washington politicians. What do I want? I want everyone to pay their fair share through a Fair Tax. If you want to sit on your a** all day and eat Doritos have at it. Hey, this is America, just don’t expect me or the rest of the responsible citizens to pay for your laziness.
Viewer – Stop reading the lefty talking points and at least get your facts straight OK?
The “Bush” tax cuts reduced the income tax burden for all income tax payers – even down to $42K. Also, the top 10 percent ($106K income and up) of wage earners pay – per the IRS – about 70% of the income taxes in this country. The top 1% – over 38% all on their own. The bottom 50% (under $31K income) of wage earners pay only 3.2%. That leaves the “middle” 40% of the population carrying just about 30% of the burden. While $106K may be “rich” to some, it really is not living the high life – especially if the family lives in places like NY, Chicago, San Fran, etc).
Where the “middle” gets hit the hardest is in state and local taxes and fees. Like property taxes, car registrations, gas taxes and the like.
The Tea Parties are to protest all of the above. The government needs to start living within the amount of money it brings in. Just like I – someone having their earnings taken by the government – has to.
Ha ha ha! People have been waiting to be heard for decades, and now is the time. They understand thier power and have been given the tools to tap that power. If you do not understand the silent majority, you will at some point soon. It’s not really about taxes, it is about truth, accountability, ethics, freedom, and the idea of liberty. Many have forgotten what liberty really means. This is a conscience movement, a change in intuative thinking. A new age of progress is upon us, finally. It all is part of a larger evalutionary path. Fate, if you will. These past events needed to happen to expose the rotten core. Mentally prepare yourself for a change my friend, cause change is acoming, like it our not. we are shifting into high gear so hold on!
Theirs absolutely no wisdom in trying to convince the walking dead liberals of what this country stands for, it’s a waste of time and effort.
Solution: Erase and start over!
To acquire my wealth by the swet of your brow is my liberal desire here and now
Why work and toil all hours of the day
When others do, for me to take it away?
You wing-nuts are about as confused as ever. Since the implosion of the right’s leadership, you lemmings run around bumping into each other like Keystone Cops looking for something to rail against. Now you’ll even try to skew the meaning of a pretty clear Gallup poll. Fact is, MOST Americans are quite pleased with the current administration’s decisions despite the mess the past one put us all into. You’re what folks in my community call a “magga-dog”. Try to feed him and he’ll just bite you.
Enjoy life on the fringe, looney tunes.
“Try as you might, you can’t beat Obama!” Hahah!
And d***it, stop wasting perfectly good tea! Couldn’t you throw a castor-oil party or something?
To the viewer who did not leave a name but stated “I think we know “what they’re about”–they’re Tea Tantrums by which the spoiled rotten right can act out all of its various frustrations after losing the general election.”
We are not rich, my husband was laid off nearly months ago. We are on the verge of losing our home and everything we have WORKED HARD for. Acting out frustrations? You bet! Spoiled rotten? Hardly. Understand the issue before you attack those involved. My husband, myself, our three children, and my father will all be at a Tea Party tomorrow.
This is not a democrat or republican function, this is a liberty function. It is to try to remind the government who is in charge. Republicans did not want to win the last presidential election, the out of touch republican “leaders” ran a liberal on the republican ticket that is why republicans did not vote or McCain. There are many a conservative that would have voted or Hillary Clinton over McCain if given the option so people please loose the democrat versus republican banter, both parties are the same and look out for the same interests which unfortunately are not the interests of the American people.
I doesn’t matter if you are a democrat a republican or greeny, libertarian or constitutionalist please take to the streets tomorrow, we can not afford to let our country go the way of Europe.
The unfortunate thing about this event is fox new and the republican party jumping all over it, It will take from its credibility. We are in this mess because the democrats and republicans in charge do not respect the people, we must make them respect us.

The portion of the population who depend on my tax dollars for income is growing yet the politicians are sucking the life out of everyone with higher taxes on everything is out of control. This country can’t afford it. The working tax paying class is shrinking yet thes buggers spend more….Hello, it’s an economic melt down. The Obama crash is coming. I’m saving every dime and stocking my house with food with the thought that the great great great depression is on its way. Thinking otherwise is foolish. If it dosen’t happen oh well, if it does I’ll be prepared. Not one of my libral friends can come over for hand outs or help, that Obama’s job, remember that. Stupid gets what stupid does…..
“Gallup Poll Apparently Says Us Teabaggers Are Out Of Touch (?)”
I can’t get up off the floor I am laughing so hard. That title is so ironically hillarious I can’t stop.
Teabaggers need to get a grip LOL.
krystal is definitely a republican… maybe this explains their ridiculous mental deficiencies w/ taxes…
make $100, pay $10 (10%)
make $10,000 – pay $100 (1%)
yes yes, burden the poor, jesus notwithstanding…
The debate won’t really matter in the not too distant future. Yes, most Americans will get a tax cut, yes the current administration is spending at record levels, and yes your standard of living will go down. It’s called the great green-wash. As the carbon-tax ponzi scheme gets implemented corporations will be paying increased taxes under the guise of “green”. They will pass the costs onto consumers (check your local utility website, they are already greasing the skids because they are going to stick it to you) Transportation costs will increase and goods and services will adjust accordingly. It is actually genius on the part of government and corporate America. I think it really hurts democrats in the long run because most democrats work in the public sector, or any sector that does not have to compete and feeds off others. Some Dems may believe they are making out with the tax off-set, but our dollars will weaken. Our civil servants are crafty and arrogant. Isn’t it interesting how TV preachers and politicians become mirror images of each other. I am all for cleaner air, corporate responsibility, the preservation of nature, but that is not the true motivation. Prepare for the “Green” economy.
Reading through these comments, I’m surprised at the number of non-native English speakers there are in the tea-party movement. On TV it looked like you were a just a bunch of white folks that didn’t care one hoot about big government until a black man became president.
I know, I know – just a coincidence.
I love all of the comments from the people who did not attend the tea parties who seem to know exactly who was there, what they said, and what they stood for.
