Bowing to Kings, Bowed By Pirates, Obama Shows His Weakness

As Obama bows in supplication before a Saudi King then tries to spin his way out of his own actions, America is being humiliated by whelps at sea. He was just leaning, we’re told, not bowing. It was because the Saudi King is short or so goes the White House spin. But the Queen of England is even shorter than the Saudi King and there was no royal navel gazing from Obama in England! Obama failed that test, indeed.
To be sure, Barack Obama is being tested just like Joe Biden said he would. But those testing him are not the sort of big state actors that Biden imagined would task the new president. They are low-tech, low-rent, unorganized pirates, not heads of state of great and dangerous nations. And this fact, that it is mere pirates testing him, is an even bigger slap in the face than it would be if it were a powerful nation or two testing President Obama.
And worse, these skinny, underfed, unorganized and ill-equipped pirates are making a fool of what is ostensibly the most powerful man in the world. And it is about to get worse if Obama allows the U.S. Navy to stand idly by as more pirates come to the scene of the standoff to float in solidarity with the four fellows holding captain Philips in that disabled power boat.
Obama has already allowed the Navy to miss one opportunity to end this standoff. Captain Richard Phillips made an escape attempt by jumping overboard and trying to make a swim for the U.S. Navy ship floating nearby. This was an ideal time for the Navy to blast the boat to pieces while the captain was in the water. The Navy could then have scooped up all five with ease. But instead, the Navy sat and did nothing as the pirates jumped into the water and dragged the captain back aboard.
Now reports have it that another pirate ship is headed to the scene to aid their four stranded comrades. Word also has it that they have other hostages in the ship with them. As it stands right now, the U.S. Navy has one hostage under its watchful eye. But soon it may have dozens to worry about.
If Obama does not task the Navy to end this situation before more pirate ships filled with more hostages get to the scene, it will be a tangle impossible to end without the loss of many hostage’s lives. The French already ended one such stand off and it did cost the life of one hostage, though others were freed. But end it they did, nonetheless.
But isn’t that the worst part of it? While Obama idly sits at the picnic table watching his kids play in the White House yard the French Navy has acted. Here we have what is supposed to be the most powerful man in the world doing nothing while the French… THE FRENCH… use proper military force against these criminal pirates.
Obama is being tested from the most unlikely of sources. He is failing that test and showing the world that his “America Sucks” tour of Europe was not mere glad-handing boilerplate. Obama is proving that he means to defang the most powerful nation in the world. Obama apparently intends to hobble the United States of America. If this is not the case, he’d better step up to the plate and end this pirate outrage quickly.

An update for all you unhinged, anti-American lefties that found this post from whatever hate site you came from.
There will be no “retraction.” This story was posted several days before the fine young men of the Navy made the decision to take the kill shots. All the criticism against Obama was valid at the time. And the last line of the original posting above was the mitigator, anyway.
Obama let this thing go on far too long. It should have been over the hour the Navy ship got there, not allowed to drag on for 5 days. Obama nearly failed this test for the most part. Call it a grade of D+.
Obama is Jimmy Carter redux, up til now the worst American president in modern times, and this won’t be the last time Obama fails a foreign policy test. It wasn’t the first, either, because he already failed the N.Korean missile test he faced while on his European vacation trip. I only hope that he doesn’t materially hurt this country next time.

In Somalia, we know where the pirates’ bases are… we know where many of the pirates are… and we know where their boats are.
All of these things should be vaporized by Navy pilots tomorrow-
this should have a substantial deterrent effect.
But it’s not going to happen with this president- it’s approaching the point where one has to question his motivations and loyalties, really. Like when he snubbed the British -our closest ally for decades- because of some weird personal grudge re. what they did in Kenya 50 years ago.

Obama was successful in ending this episode of piracy. For the last four days, a segment of American media have been rooting for his failure, even prematurely declaring failure and defeat. What gives?
Obama did NOT sit idly by; the US Navy was NOT hamstrung by dithering. Our president and the USN came through. Can’t you be glad for our nation’s success?

The problem with the right, is that they refuse to accept responsibility for their actions. Never have. They are the first to assign blame and the last to accept it. In other words, they are perpetual children.
I suspect that Captain Philip’s family is grateful that our Navy didn’t precipitously apply the “proper military force” used by the French, which left one of the hostages dead.
I do not share Warner Todd Huston’s view that America, including her military, is weak and ineffectual.

Excellent article. I can tell you one thing, if I were in charge (err, I mean if President Bush were in charge), that captain wouldn’t have waited for days to be rescued. No sir. We would have saved him by carpet-bombing the life raft he was in and then dropping a bunker buster nuke on it. Then we would have showed the Somali pirates that we mean business by invading Iran or possibly re-invading Iraq.
To the poster above who tried to make light of me accidentally shooting my friend in the face: just remember that the guy I shot apologized to me. And it’s not funny.
So, now that it was revealed that the Seals were twice given the go ahead to cap the pirates, and now that the Pirates have nice round holes in their head and the captain is a free man…
I assume that you’ll somehow manage to give George W. Bush credit for it. Because it can’t possibly be Obama acting like more of a Leader than Bush was in eight years that caused this situation to work out, right?

Here’s a perfect example: Dubya and I fuc*ed up the situation in New Orleans so badly that, if it were a normal presidency, Katrina would be our legacy and all anyone ever talked about. But we distracted them from Katrina by performing so exceptionally in Iraq and with the economy.
That’s all you need to do. For your next column, I suggest you write a piece about whether they should add George and me to Mount Rushmore or whether they should destroy Mount Rushmore and build a statue of Bush’s face and call it Mount Bushmore. Double down.

Gingrich, Beck, Krauthammer, Hume and the rest gleefully bet against Obama and the U.S. Military, as videotaped comments demonstrate. They seized on this incident (prior to the rescue) to make false judgments based on false assumptions, as usual. They feigned outrage or Obama’s impotence and incompetence, etc. etc. They are deeply disappointed today, I imagine.
Our military did a great job and our new president came through with flying colors.
If Bush had been in power he would have invaded Iraq and to stop the pirates and they’d still be free 7 years later.
